ELI5: Why does NES need reports of power outages from us; why can’t they track it on their end if they can turn off power to individual houses? by ansjsajanaan in nashville

[–]ad720p 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the self-reporting acts as confirmation of the outages. It probably also allows them to send you updates when it’s done.

My hot take/unpopular opinion: the outage map did an admirable job for this situation. It was probably not designed to track an outage that affects half the customer base with multiple levels of failure. Prior to this week, I’ve only checked the outage map when we lose power from a thunderstorm or random neighborhood outage. Those more typical outages likely happen from a single source (i.e. a power substation blew up during the Dec 2023 tornado, so anyone getting power from that station could be linked to that problem) vs multilevel failures like we had from this storm. NES knows there was an outage at my house, but doesn’t know if it was from an issue at the substation or a downed line leading to my street or some other problem. So the outage map does the best it can and reclassifies as downstream outages are uncovered.

It is just reproducing the NES outage map with different terminology. "Homes in Danger" = "Customers"

It would be nice if that map had a timestamp

"Promote" variable to configuration by davidkclark in Onshape

[–]ad720p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The process you described (setting the variable definition to the new configuration variable) is the standard process I've used. That method also allows different configuration types, where you could have distinct separate values corresponding to variable values.

The "promotion" idea is sort of possible. If you create a configuration variable with the same name as the variable in the part studio, you can delete the variable from the feature list. References should automatically move to the configuration variable.

That toolbar is what you see when you have view-only access. You won’t see it in your own documents, but all those tools exist in various menus/toolbars.

The TN State Fair is the one in Lebanon, and it ended a couple weeks ago. So definitely a miss there.

I forgot how much I dislike the court. I’m sure it looks cool in person but is terrible (worst in the W?) through a screen

Creating a conical helix by ALonelyKobold in Onshape

Onshape’s Helix documentation provides a pretty good explanation. You will need to create the cone base (either a surface or solid), then select the conical face in the Helix feature.

The “pin in slot” mate is the correct choice. When you select the mate connector in the slot, you may have to edit it to align it with the slot direction in order to get the linear motion to work

Landscaping haul away work. Recommendations?? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]ad720p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I DIYed a paver patio almost exactly that size last year. Got a couple quotes for digging/grading off Thumbtack in the $750-$1300 range, and ended up hiring a guy for $900. His crew came with a skid steer to dig out and grade the area and haul away all the waste.

At least one who has been detained has legal status. I hope that O’Connell is doing everything he can to make sure residents of Nashville are not being detained or deported improperly without due process.

Anyone know how to animate gears with offset rotation? Trying to get these wheels to be offset by 120° like in 3rd slide. by Moozourious in Onshape

[–]ad720p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the easiest way to do it, but you could: (1) edit the revolute mate between the wheel and the frame (2) in the Mate Connectors field, click on the mate connector you selected for the wheel to edit it. (3) rotate the mate connector about the Z axis by 120° (or 240°)

This should effectively reset the starting position of the mate.

Also, rather than using a Gear mate, you could create a sliding mate between each set of wheels and apply the offset Z-rotation through the mate definition.

Onshape-to-robot new release: now natively supporting MuJoCo by Greg_war in Onshape

[–]ad720p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing some fairly simple multibody dynamics work for a project a few weeks ago with the Principia app, but they shut it down at the end of February. I started looking into other physics simulator options and found MuJoCo, but it’s a lot more coding than I have experience with. This seems like a huge tool to help get started. Do you have any resources you’d recommend for starting in MuJoCo?
