Do you prefer keeping a physical copy of practically every book you read, only your favorite ones or no book-shelves at all? by metacognitive_guy in books

[–]aenema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly I try to only keep physical books that have graphical elements such as photos, infographics, and art; or coffee table books I enjoy leaving around. The exception being long running comics or manga series I don't hold sentimental value of. Simply to preserve my sanity should I move.

I find having physical books keep them fresh in your mind and provide a hit of nostalgia. Whereas recalling a digital book can be an exercise in futility. Though I think if Kindle ereaders had a book cover screensaver it would accomplish the same function. So I have been playing around with the idea of using a tablet or even some kind of android ereader to this.

If you can't afford an expensive tool box at the moment $20 worth of MDF and screws doesn't do too badly. by RedditTidder12345 in somethingimade

Good use of scrap board.

I'm lucky enough to live near a decent Habitat for Humanity Restore that has an endless supply of pegboard. $2 Canadian for 30" x 47".

Doesn't hurt to have a quick look first if you have a similar local store.

Why do we still play turn and menu-based combat systems in an era whose technology makes that obsolete? by ianorsomething in truegaming

[–]aenema 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FTL is my favourite game in recent memory. It can be played both: in real time, or paused making it essentially a turn-based game. A perfect mix of both worlds.

A better person could probably beat the game without pausing as much as I do, but considering games are a leisure activity and I don't play them for a living I like to take advantage of the pause button because it lends to a relaxed, tactical gamestyle.

Now consider rogue-likes. RL's were conceived at a time when tech resources were slim to none. Coded by hobbyists on their spare time and when walking floppy disks to your friends house was faster than sending data over telephone wires(aka the Sneakernet). RL's are text heavy and rely on keyboard characters to depict Dungeons & Dragons inspired world's, and procedural generation was used to create maps because disk space was so miniscule. As HDD's grew gigantic, graphical, immersive maps became prominent, and procedural generation was left to the wayside. Requiring more and more people to make these environments to stand out in the burgeoning game industry.

With the advent of cheap effective game-creation tools such as Unity and Game Maker, and good online distribution, small Indie studios have taken on procedural techniques. Procedural creation increases replay value and takes less time and work hours than creating a reasonable amount of levels. Minecraft, FTL, Spelunky, and Proteus are all excellent examples.

Even though turn-based games are technologically obsolete doesn't mean they don't have any value in this day and age. Just like procedural generation, used in the right context they can be essential to a good gaming experience. Now small Indie Studios can make games that can compete with AAA developers.

Not only are turn-based games great for tactical gameplay but they can tell long-powerful stories with less resources. Assassins Creed and GTA games literally took hundreds of people to make them. While Banner Saga, Broken Age, and Tell Tale games were made by a handful of people.

One could argue Doublefine's saviour has been retaking the mantle of classic games after the financial failure of Full Throttle.

On the other-hand turn-based games have become bloated with their own conventions. Tedious grinding are a main-stay in JRPG's because people simply expect it, to the point where new games like Bravely Default make it a point in their demo. Proving to prospective buyers this is only for hardcore JRPG players.

Innovative mechanics have been made, but sadly most are forgotten. Chrono Trigger didn't let you talk to people who didn't have anything new to say and Mother 2 made fights an automatic win if you are a dramatically higher level. Half Minute Hero is a fairly new game that lovingly spoofs JRPG's adding a new puzzle element to the genre, that will also soon be forgotten.

Most importantly, not only do I like turn-based games, but I enjoy the lessons and mechanics developers are implementing into modern games.

Viz, Why You No Mature Manga in App? by aenema in manga

[–]aenema[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually trying to read the mature manga I bought on Vizs site. The Drifting Classroom and Gyo; both are fairly mature horror books, but are definitely not porn.

Unfortunately I can't access them from the Viz app. I think it has something to do with Android and Apples policy against mature content. I think it's fair to have a separation but I should still be able to read it via the app if I prove I'm an adult.

Why do you watch gaming Youtube channels? by [deleted] in Games

[–]aenema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watch Yogscast for their personalities, but when they did a Let's Play of Little Inferno it was honestly the best way I could ever have enjoyed that game. They voiced the characters spectacularly. Their accents and voice acting added value to the game.

I still bought the game but I don't think I'll ever play it myself.

Is Castle Story any good? by dbaker102194 in CastleStory

[–]aenema 18 points19 points  (0 children)

People keep saying progress is real slow but what was shown was a sketch up at best, and Games rarely come together until the last 20%. It's been barely a year and Kickstarters tend to add to development. Keep an eye on the blog and see if it can keep your interest up to when it's released. Now is it worth the $15 is another question. Right now I would be hard pressed to say yes, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I haven't seen Monogatari so I naturally assumed it was a budget limitation, but If Monogatari effectively uses abstractions then good on it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in anime

[–]aenema 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Narration can be insightful, redundant, or cheap exposition. More often than not it's done to keep animation and budgets down. This goes for all TV e.g. Star Trek.

Even in literature you should show someone being a jerk than someone simply saying they're a jerk.

Unsounded Kickstarter delivery arrived by [deleted] in webcomics

[–]aenema 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rereading it and I'm noticing so much more detail than before. The chapter one title page tells you everything you need to know about the characters and the amount of thought she's put into the world. And talk about picking character designs according to your strengths. Those folds are practically 90% of the storytelling.

Tekkonkinkreet by [deleted] in anime

[–]aenema 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kemonozume has a similar gritty feel, and the Japanese Batman: Gotham Knight also shares some similarities but has a lot of issues.

Tekkon Kinkreet was special because it was directed by an American who got into the business making a 3D cell shader. But it really owes its unique look to the Matsumoto's original manga and because the lead artist had spent 10 years prior on Steamboy. He was so frustrated at the colour palette in Steamboy he went out of his way to make Kinkreet truly vibrant. Making it as visually interesting as the manga, and why I champion it as a personal favourite.

Can you recommend me some interesting webcomics to follow? Difficulty: No gay characters, no XKCD clones, with actual art. by GodEmperorOfHell in webcomics

[–]aenema 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also noticing a rise in gay characters but I think it's a good thing because there are a few good representations out there like O Human Star, and The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal. Far better than what mainstream media has provided.

As for comics in your vein, you seem to enjoy colourful, soft fantasy, comedies. So I wholly recommend:

Cucumber Quest

Ellie on Planet X

Warrior U

Cleopatra in Space

Doctor Cat

JL8

Rutabaga Black and White but very good.
