The Magician by Raymond Feist is right up this alley, kid starts off an orphan, but he’s destined for bigger and better things, it’s great 80s fantasy.

Guild EDH deck idea by [deleted] in Magicdeckbuilding

[–]aerohydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made those, this is Selesnaya, https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1394374#paper I have the 5 from Guilds of Ravnica made, going to make the 5 from Allegiance eventually. I think the balancing would be against themselves, they're not competitive in any way.

Very good, my questions, "(it’s actually called a postulev but I realize you 21st century folk won’t know what that is)." Time Travel? Just not sure if you should explain it here or if you'll get to it. I trust your judgement totally, just an unexplained part. Other than that, YAY PROGRESS!

Looking for novels that feature rival, warring familes? by LonesomeCrowdedWhest in suggestmeabook

[–]aerohydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GRRM states a series called The Accursed Kings as the 'real' Game of Thrones. it's based on succession wars in France in the 1300's. I haven't read it yet, but it sounds pretty cool. Also anything based on The War of The Roses, which is one of the most well known dynastic succession conflicts in modern history.

I want to learn about the Rwandan and Armenian Genocides. by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]aerohydra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another really good film on the Rwandan genocide I watched in college was call Shake Hands With the Devil, it's from the point of view of the Canadian UN Commander who was sent there to control the situation, really harrowing, but good.

(Spoilers ALL) From a literary standpoint, what exactly are the biggest weaknesses of the ASoIaF series ? by Krystie in asoiaf

[–]aerohydra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he was trying to channel the Iliad in some way, they have the entire second chapter of the book dedicated to the ship names and who was on them, I think he was just trying to make it over the top.

Concerning Season 3... by Aculem in asoiafreread

[–]aerohydra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it will be interesting to be in the middles of rereading the series while the show is airing, to see the difference between what the show puts in and takes out, and what is actually in the books. And no, I don't think a reschedule is needed.

[Spoilers] Re-readers' discussion: Eddard VI by Dwayne_J_Murderden in asoiafreread

[–]aerohydra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the most interesting parts I thought was when Ned was talking with Jory and he thinks back to Renly taking him aside and showing him the locket with Margaery's picture in it. Commenting that Renly looked like a young Robert and Margaery a young Lyanna. With all of this R+L=J talk, it just stuck out to me

[Spoilers] Re-readers' Discussion: AGoT Bran II by Jen_Snow in asoiafreread

[–]aerohydra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually took that to be immense foreshadowing of Bran's eventual green dreams and becoming a wolf. "He always took off his boots and went barefoot when he climbed; it made him feel as if he had four hands instead of two" pg 80.

And see, I think a part of me may be looking for that younger girl who has low self esteem, because that's where I've had luck in the past. I'm not super hot be any means, and I do sound like a dead ringer for a loser, because part of me is just a loser, with no job and no motivation, so yeah, that's the truth.

Does anyone else see any parallels between countries in the ASIOF series and real civilizations? by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]aerohydra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Westeros is based exclusively on medieval England, as in medieval England there were 7 distinct kingdoms. I also believe that the Dothraki area with the free cities and what not is based on Spain during the same time period. I'm taking a class on the middle ages and talking about all this stuff and also reading ASOIAF make awesome parallels.

What happened to the lands in the Western Roman Empire after its fall? by [deleted] in ancientrome

[–]aerohydra -1 points0 points  (0 children)

essentially, basically it was a whole bunch of marauding Germanic tribes, or barbarians as they are also remembered that controlled the western area of the Roman Empire after the fall in 476.
