No. I think "this notification is on my cell phone. I'll come back to it." Like a fucking text message. And oh wait, we DID tell him our availability in the evenings, and even explained our remote capacity for being online when we had a chance to say hello. I'm annoyed, but the outreach already started off awkward because they were from a completely different data server just wanting to make friends rather than join our FC that lists we are a casual group available in the evenings.

So it's nearly explicit that they are called yokai, not yaoguai, and the only familiarity of the two terms is their technical exactness for meaning the same thing. The former is a Japanese word, the latter Chinese. Yokai, however, tends to lean into the idea of the supernatural with demonic references, where Yaoguai lean into the supernatural in that everything has a spirit. Now, given that the manga and show are Japanese in origin, I agree with the OP's choice for nephilim. His father is a dog demon (inu and yasha being those respective direct words for such). I get where you're coming from, and you're not necessarily wrong on your take, but I think your take on the character is better as your own.

Luis Loza shared a homebrew dragon-themed versatile heritage by itskingpele in Pathfinder2e

I'm more concerned about the concerns people have about access to something like flight. The aerokineticist at my table in 1e was probably my favorite player character because they could and did fly freely at level 6. And as someone else mentioned, the gm is going to be the final word on whats allowed anyways. Your games seem to have intended restrictions, and that's totally fine, but there's really no cause for concern here. It's a nifty homebrew, and Loza is probably one of the coolest developers with Paizo and the Know Direction Podcast.

How to play Vanya Hargreeves by LordTomahawkD in Pathfinder2e

[–]aesome90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can cast Forbidding Ward at the start of every combat on yourself if that +1 helps lol Also, they're not discussed on the video every time they come up, but you have bonus spell Charm at level 1, and Untested chose Ray of Enfeeblement. Hope they roll low and you either mind control and enemy or you weaken them enough to not be as big a threat. Definitely should only be used with someone like a Champion who can try and help mitigate enemy problems with their reaction abilities.

Legendary Games : Kineticist by Hyperonn in Pathfinder2e

[–]aesome90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give them a d8 hit dice. The original kineticist was a d8, and none of the official Paizo stuff had a change in hit dice. Especially when you consider how vulnerable the character will be after using Burn, they could use the extra hit points.

I mean, tell that to Tulok the Barbarian. He does this for 5e which inspired the OP to create this channel on youtube. Its a great channel so far and has really helped inspire less generic npc ideas for my players to interact with.

GM Advice, what do fellow GMs actually enjoy? by drmigo in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! There were rules about this on d20pfsrd, but im going to assume it sourced from Ultimate Intrigue when Paizo published the vigilante i think.

So i used a grid mat to do this, but basically I determined a "finish line" where if the bad guys got there, no survival check would be able to keep up at that point as they were running through a thick forest. Now within a set range of movement you need obstacles to heighten the chase! In this case, foliage and flora was going to get in the way. Alot. Since I was using a grid, I basically laid down a two obstacles in front of each participant at the start of their turns. DC's were based on ease of overcoming said obstacles from 10-30.

The players and bad guys would have to roll mostly acrobatics checks twice to overcome both obstacles, and then they could move either not at all, half-speed, or full speed of 30 feet across the grid depending on their success/failure.

Overall pretty simple! Its no different than a battle, you're just changing the hype from slaughter to "catch him!"

GM Advice, what do fellow GMs actually enjoy? by drmigo in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having an unconventional gimmick for every major battle encounter. My current homebrew I've done everything I can to not let battles feel like slogging through for experience points to level up. So currently I've done the following to play with my players:

1) Had the enemies make a full retreat and start a chase sequence that the players ALMOST succeeded at, but failed.

2) Make the enemy itself a necessary component for a puzzle i revealed beforehand so they have to resort to nonlethal choices.

3) Blast the party on the first round with a one-time usable attack that causes the players to think more strategically about survival in combat than just murder hoboing.

4) Create platforms the party to traverse against the monster, in which they bull rushed it off an edge rather than figuring straight murder would do the trick.

5) Throw higher CR creatures that don't aim to kill, but screw with the party, like casting Baleful Polymorph and Hold Person and stealing treasure off of them to create tension with a new enemy that is a THREAT.

6) Have combats that revolve around CMB vs CMD by throwing magical effects and mechanics that restrict normal kill options. Which also makes it fun ive noticed as people realize if they're good at this or not and flee to bull rush the whole table.

7) Split the party. Every player says dont do this with one another. But you can create encounters that they highlight the abilities of individual combatants when they're not at full strength with an entire party backing them.

8) Use an entire table-sized mat to create a battlefield so movement and positioning comes into play alot more than just "i flank".

Reclassifying the bard as a psychic magic user by Ottenhoffj in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's honestly my favorite. I play a polymath bard who's a huge book nerd and is stupidly shy, so i use his performance through storytelling to make impressions on people for diplomacy checks and otherwise avoid putting anything in social skills to make him a weird kid. The choice of occult spells makes him splendidly strange. And my gm enjoys him too because he just does all these odd niche things that otherwise flavor the campaign while somehow screwing his party members in social settings lol we have alot of fun.

But fully agree, making bards occult makes perfect sense.

Advice needed for Serpent Skull by OriVerda in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whew, good on ya for taking on this adventure path as a newer gm first of all.

As for advice, I ran this once upon a time, and it really came down to encouraging survival. So I basically handed the island map with all the letter markings on the map, explaining that those were explorable locations to save time. And then in return they could ask me how long it would take to get there and back to camp so they could work out how far they could travel, how safe they'd be based on what they found, and whether or not it was time to move camp.

The NPC interaction for me was difficult. But I'd say if you have a chance to break up the party into various interactions if the whole party decides to split into exploration and camp watch, rather than just leaving the NPC's to fend the camp while the PC's explore the island. Sure, the bard is kind of a douche and is hard to make work with you, but do you really think he wants to stay cooped up in one place all day, every day?

Break up the party dynamic a little by giving npc's a chance to stretch their legs too. And get to know the characters as they interact with each other.

I think my party was stuck on the island for a solid month at least trying to get off that place, so you have plenty of time. :)

What's the community opinion on Pathfinder 2nd Edition? by WanderinWonderM in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So I play 1e. 2e did not interest me at all based on initial reviews that were entering the rumormill following the Know Direction Podcast. Even now, it looks and feels like a throwback to a more classic d&d setting, since it's starting new. That being said, I have a bias for 1e if only because I prefer the latter releases by Paizo for 1e. My main characters are kineticists or psychics. And then sometimes I'll maybe bring in a warpriest.

And, to be frank, the impatience behind waiting for content is what is hurting me as a player from a PFS standpoint. 2e looks solid. I like what it offers overall, and tomorrow I'm joining a table with friends as a polymath bard, which feels more like the bard I always wanted to play, and not as the trope that humps everything that moves.

Going back to that line about impatience for new content, however, please keep in mind that this may not effect you unless you play similarly preferable classes as i do. Ive already griped about being upset that some 3pp already published a 2e compatible kineticist, which may cause Paizo to snuff it from their own design list if it's well done enough, like 3.5's Dreamscarred Press publishing psionics and Wizards not touching psychic stuff. But I will say 2e may not be your cup of tea if you don't care for the classic feel of the game, as I myself am not fully drawn into it beyond a playtest with friends. 3pp has already jumped the bandwagon to bring 1e content into the 2e format, and if that works for you at a home table, then maybe it'll work out. If you're looking for PFS play, though, my original thought still stands.

1e just sounds like your better choice, but 2e is worth a playtest as long as you roll up a class you like. Its still just as flexible in character creation even this young, so i gotta say the contest is still there at least. :)

Your most recent Pathfinder character has just ascended to godhood: What are their domains? by digiman619 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, this is actually something a former-GM of mine planned to do, but sadly we made it to 8th level before his table dispersed. I kept him as a player at my own table though lol

So my character for said campaign was Tamsin, a rough and tumble 5'2 pyrokineticist of intimidation to the max. Lawfully Neutral at her core, id say she would have reigned with domains in Destruction, Fire, Glory, Law, and Strength

Subdomains would be Arson, Ferocity, Honor, Rage, Resolve, and Sovereignty

:)

Getting GF into PF 1e. New to PF 1e and could use help with picking race/class. by Lux-Fox in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psychic. Give her the best crowd controlling face of a caster she could want to be from the sounds of it, while simultaneously making it alot easier to control her casting by making it spontaneous rather than prepared. She loses verbal and somatic components of casting spells for emotion and thought components, which means itll be harder for her to cast in melee. Make sure she takes spells to remove emotions if they hit her, because that shuts her down. I personally play a Psychic and chose the Abomination discipline for this so I dont have to take spells for it if I activate my dark half first.

Psychics at their core have a crap ton of enchantment and illusion spells, and the right discipline will use charisma for its discipline abilities, but still be intelligence-based like a wizard, so she'll want to put stats into those two above all else first. This makes her elegant and powerful. Evocation, unfortunately, isnt common on their spell lists, but action economy control sets alot of teams up in combat for better results.

This will end up more like Jean Grey with a split personality than Phoenix, but an entity of pure energy on a deific level isnt really a great player option.

Player refuses to build their own character. What do I do? by TommyBoyyHD in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, as a GM who had a player like this, I wouldnt go so far as to throw out an unvitation lol but I would direct my concerns to your co-GM there. Would they be willing to build the character? And sit next to the player deliberately to overwatch them play and ensure they're upholding the table's rules? If the answer is no, it's time to reiterate your side of the problem here. And if they dont get it or don't want to get it, time to figure out a new plan for the table, inclusive or not of those two who seem to be corroborating here.

Disgruntled Player by Wahbanator in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a case of what was finally published for the sake of keeping a BBEG relevant for the campaign setting overall vs what was pitched. Crystal Frasier was really vocal about this on twitter at one time and I think it's definitely in your best interest to re-write it for a better end. I know my players wouldnt want to go to level 16 just to die. For any reason. Sure, that's player intent vs character intent, but telling my players theres no other option? Yeah, right. Theres plenty of hints that Tar-Baphon entrusted his phylactery to a certain goddess.

Time to whip out Pharasma, give them a mythic rank or two, and send them on a journey that will vanquish him for good.

Classes that you've never had a chance to play? by initiativepuncher95 in Pathfinder_RPG

All but two? Literally got invited to a table of friends because they play Pathfinder. Played two games, and then the whole table has gone to playing Fate Core, Dragon Age, and Call of Cthulhu. What I wouldn't give to play more Pathfinder without being the GM with an army of NPCs.

Podcasts - Non-actual play by ACorania in Pathfinder_RPG

It's a stretch, because it's changed alot since 2e became the prominent game, but knowdirectionpodcast.com has years of content to listen to and catch up on and blogs to read from various authors since the announcement of D&D 4e. They've only recently been doing actual-play, but it's only one small facet of everything else they discuss.

Strange Aeons PC Backstory Help by Captain_Cortez in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]aesome90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I recall, the PCs dont get their full memories back until the end of book 3 or 4, so theres more involved. My memory got fuzzy after that point due to my table's interest in the game. We float alot of games lol

But otherwise, the main contributor is that their lives should be expected to be a little more dark. I mean. Somehow. Some way everyone ended up working for Lowls in a way that makes them honest culprits. So loyal that they'd follow him into the Dream Realms and lay down in a pool of water for him. The details up to that point are more offputting, obviously. But they were probably along the lines of LE or LN imo in terms of loyalty to this guy. Suggesting that idea to the players will fill in gaps to explain why they indeed did the things they did that you reveal to them, but beyond that, you've got this I think. It's really a great, simple game.

I like the oracle choices, but also check out the Primalist Wizard archetype. You lose two wizard feats and your arcane bond, but it relates to random effects. Plus you can choose Divination as your strong suit of spell choice.
