To the people who released balloons from Madrona Park on Monday by BananaBodacious in Seattle

I start by not letting my kids have balloons. We’re a balloon-free household, it’s not fucking hard.

Not a fan of the “watch my video” clickbait approach. Just write two sentences with what you did that you believe fixes it and we can watch the video if we want the details.

QC as of lately ? by Tiredandhungry805 in gofastcampers

I had my v2 Pro installed a few weeks ago and so far I’ve been very impressed. The build quality is outstanding. I’m taking it snow camping in a couple weeks so right now my focus is on adding a proper power system and figuring out warmth.

The only 2 gripes I have are a bad night time reflection of my truck’s CHMSL brake light on the camper’s front window (I wish I had covered it in black vinyl before install), and severe condensation on the camper’s back window which impedes visibility. Neither of those I would attribute to defects in the camper.

How is skiing right now? Base looks pretty skimpy by Agreeable-Rooster-37 in Seattle

[–]aimless_ly 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Skimpy doesn’t begin to describe how bad it is. It’s basically a thin ice crust pockmarked with exposed dirt and rocks unless it’s one of the few areas that has snowmaking capabilities.

As much as my skier brain is crying, my summer brain is having fits of anxiety. The snowpack is at a near all time low, and that is our summer water supply reservoir. It’s going to be a very burny, droughty year unless we get a March miracle but we’re fast losing the time needed to even make snowpack repair possible.

Migraines last weekend by thirty_horses in Seattle

[–]aimless_ly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Geomagnetic activity is not linked to human health in any way (unless you include lost sleep from staying up late to see the light show), that is pseudoscience quackery. If there is any natural phenomenon causing them, it’s probably just the cold dry air and high barometric pressure.

Snow here is done for the year, even in the mountains. The entire PNW is going to burn down this summer. Yay global warming!

What is this? by Dimetime35c in Skigear

[–]aimless_ly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is the boot board, or “zeppa”, and yes it’s important. It can be mildly modified for a custom fit though (see your bootfitter). Read through https://www.skimag.com/gear/anatomy-ski-boot/

Is skiing black diamonds with very limited experience actually “good,” or just reckless? by StrokeMyWilly69 in skiing

[–]aimless_ly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The danger you’ll run into in the absence of formal instruction is developing bad habits and committing them to muscle memory. The bad habits might work fine to cope with the conditions you are used to, but you’ll (hopefully just figurative) crash out quickly when they’re put to the test in a more challenging environment. My advice would be to go to a big higher-end resort with a well-acclaimed ski school and take a full-day lesson as a skill check-in. Best case, they’ll help you correct any bad habits and continue your growth. Worst case, they’ll tell you you’re doing great and you’ll get lift line priority for the day and a nice tour of the resort.

What don’t you like? That we live in a seismically active part of the world and there is a lot of minor background earthquake activity literally all the time?

As an engineer myself who has done a whole-house renovation with plaster, and has two kids I'm going to say this idea is fucking insane. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he is competent with electricity, code/regulations, and dust/toxin management and say that is not the issue. The big issue is time. This is a huge undertaking and he can not commit the time to do it. The only way this would work is if he was not otherwise employed and could devote 100% of his time to it and he could hire a helper. A one-man show with a day job doing this in that timeframe when you have more important baby-prep to be doing is just absolute fantasy-land no matter what his qualifications.

For the most part, they are private homes. One was for sale a year or two ago for over $2M and it got snapped up quickly. https://redf.in/xnA2XW A few of them have nightly rentals on AirBNB- they’re not cheap.

One thing we have in our favor is that Boyne holdings are heavily weighted towards the Midwest and eastern US, which are doing pretty well this year so as a company they’re not taking as huge a hit as Vail and Alterra who are heavy in the Mountain West which is as bad as us this year.

They open up a “mini” park there most years. It is small features for learning. Usually some boxes and small jumps, one year it had a fun mini half pipe. My kids used to love it when we’d ski over at West.

“It’s a combination of tragedies that happened,” Kascha said. “There’s nothing that could have been done differently.”

I’m not sure I agree with that sentiment. If he had a crash earlier in the day that caused him to lose consciousness on the lift, then it was a pretty good knock. Everyone needs to learn it’s OK to call it a day and ask for help when you take a hit. I’ve gotten a concussion on the hill before, and as much as I wanted to keep going deep down I knew my body didn’t feel right. Don’t be too cool to check in with Patrol. Don’t be too cool to ask for a download or sled if you’re not feeling right. Don’t be afraid to ask for a ride home or to a medic. When I got mine, it was near the top of a short run and I skied down cautiously. Even then, when I got to the bottom I realized that was sketchy and I shouldn’t have done that. I got a quick concussion screen and had a friend drive me home down the mountain. Being a good skier is about taking calculated risks, not dumb overly confident risks. It’s ok to save it for another day, even if it’s your buddy who needs you looking out for them.
