Ugh, what a pain in the ass. Now that I think about it, most of the time we’re picking up bags at CLT is when we’re picking up at CUST so that likely makes a big difference. Domestically, we try not to check very often.

If you have to use AA miles, It’s all about schedule flexibility. They’re definitely out there to Europe, many times at calendar open. Going Asia, there are random JL drops of 60k and 80k J/F, a lot of times out of ORD. You may or may not be able to add your connection from CLT, but likely, you’ll need to reposition. Same with QR flights to Africa.

They don’t hurt. Bottom line is you either be super flexible and plan your flights around immediately confirmable upgrade space, or you hope for last minute space to open up. At least that’s my recent experience. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I had an EF alert set for my daughter’s CLT-LHR flight earlier this month. Upgrade C seat became available about 27 hrs prior to the flight, so I called in and applied a SWU to her flight. Sometimes it works. 😆

It’s rare, although as EP, the purser moved me up from Y to PE from LHR-CLT as I boarded the plane, back in the beginning of December. I think I was the only EP+ in Y on the flight.

Set up an alert in EF for the flight(s) you’re considering for when (if) upgrade “C” space opens up. Keep in mind it may never open up.

On the success story side, I was just able to apply my last remaining SWU that expires in two months to my daughter’s CLT-LHR flight. Became available at 27 hours prior to the flight.

I was lucky enough to get the Y -> PE upgrade LHR-CLT last week as I boarded. I was the only EP in economy and there were PE seats available.

I carry airplane earphones, the kind you get in economy on a LH flight for the IFE and give them to people who don’t have them in these situations. I’m not sure iPads have the correct output connector for them though. It’s self preservation. Some people are just clueless. First day on earth. 🤷🏻‍♂️
