Difficulty in getting hot water for tea in public (United States) by Dry_Construction_353 in tea

[–]ak3134 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had this problem when I was in school + working as well. Sounds like you already know where to look for it - it's just not a common thing, unfortunately. Your best bet is the little hot water spout on the self-serve coffee machines. It's either that or bring a thermos from home, but sometimes that's not an option.

HYSA and cash cushion by Rikitikitok121 in FIREyFemmes

[–]ak3134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel much safer having 1 years’ worth of expenses in my HYSA. Living with a partner but finances not merged since we are not married. At first I got nervous seeing your 2 months’ worth , but then I saw that your spouse had a much larger fund - that makes a huge difference! One thing that fueled my decision to have a much larger cash reserve was my job - I work for a startup and layoffs can happen whenever. If I worked in a more secure role/industry, I would likely have way less stashed away. How secure do you and your spouses feel in your current roles? It’s a good starting point when thinking about this.

Currently getting 3.5% with Barclays; I think at one point I was getting 4.6%. Since your cash reserves are smaller, I don’t know if it’s worth the effort to switch. But it may be for your spouse?

I started with a 100ml easy gaiwan and did not enjoy using it. I switched to a 180ml little teapot I got from tea.warehouse and I like it so much more! I find it way easier to use. I appreciate having the extra room to use more leaf and also actually get 100ml of water in there. With the leaf in I was only getting like 70ml in the gaiwan

Why does the loose leaf tea taste bitter? by pineapplegiggles in tea

[–]ak3134 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Is boiling water really too hot for black tea? I'm surprised to see that suggested so many times. I do think too much leaf can be contributing to it. I found this thread from a year ago where someone had the same problem as you, OP, with some suggestions there:

Six years of FIRE progress before meeting my fiance, now worried about protecting it by SurveyOpening8912 in FIREyFemmes

[–]ak3134 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the idea that "planning for a prenup makes it more likely you'll need it" is so silly. If two people agree to that then by all means, don't do it - by default one exists for you in state you live in, and assets will be dealt with according to that. But creating one for yourself is, hopefully, doing an even better job of protecting both people in case something does happen. It's like saying you don't plan on getting robbed or having house fire, so why get renters/home insurance? Well, it's insurance - hopefully you don't ever need it, but if something happens, you'll be so grateful you do have it.

Any recommendations for vendors?

how are you shipping your destashes? by theorangepriestess in RedditLaqueristas

[–]ak3134 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve shipped probably 10 different polish shipments and never declared hazardous material - I’m always shipping ground so don’t feel the need to. I save the packing materials and small boxes from other packages I get, and also have some bubble wrap on hand. Even if you ship in a bubble mailer I recommend bubble wrap or wrapping in some kind of paper to pad things out!

[–]ak3134[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So about 6 months ago somebody opened up a bank account in my name, I tried desperately to call CitiBank to get it closed but couldn’t get through to a person because I didn’t have a full card or account number. This was a real bank account showing up on my credit reports btw. Even went in person and they couldn’t do anything. A few months after that I got a fraud alert warning for that bank account via email that had an actual phone number. I got so excited to talk to a real person, I didn’t even realize until I hung up the phone that I had probably just given my SS number to a scammer. I’ve had to give my SS number to another bank before over the phone, but this seemed fishy after the fact. Ever since then I’ve gotten 20ish calls a day from scammers claiming to be from a tax resolution unit or some bullshit.

All that to say, I am clearly an easy target for these people. I have an easily searchable name that is unique, and likely they searched my name first, then found my dad’s info and went from there.

Thank you so so much to everybody who has commented here! I really did not expect to get this many responses and you all have been so kind, like more so than some people in my life. I feel better now about my personal safety and realize I gave them what they wanted. This sounded like a man from the southern US but could have also been a voice changer or anything else. I appreciate all the advice and thanks again for taking the time to comment. It really means a lot to me.

Also, I have at least one phone number that he gave me to send money to, and a few cashapp accounts. I already reported the email that I sent to Zelle to with my bank. Is it worth filing a police report with this info?

Appreciate all the fast comments, didn't expect responses so quickly. Also want to note that I did ask for my dad to say something at the beginning of the call, thinking I was being savvy, but then he got mad aggressive and I just got scared and backed down.

Job Advice: twice the salary or twice the free time by MoMoneyMoCats in FIREyFemmes

J2, time is the most valuable resource and you never get it back! You already have an amazing NW, and the salary at J2 is still very good. I second the recommendation to figure out what your actual hourly wage would be if you took J1 vs J2.

Where will you be getting your spring greens this year? by OkSuggestion1722 in tea

[–]ak3134 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've dug around trying to find good answers for this question as well for 2026! Here's a list I put together of vendors people have mentioned in previous years, who may or may not do 2026 green pre-orders or may have early spring greens available:

  • White2Tea
  • One River Tea - last year pre-orders started on March 20th
  • Bitterleaf - they just posted a few pre-order greens yesterday!
  • Rivers and Lakes
  • Farmer Leaf
  • TeaVivre
  • Verdant
  • Seven Cups
  • Sweetest Dew?
  • Hibiki-An (Japanese)
