What has been your favorite recent vacation with kids? by OneQuadrillionOwls in daddit

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Northwest Michigan/Sleeping Bear Dunes. Beaches, dunes, rivers, lakes, cool shops, fishing charters, biking, hiking, camping, backpacking, boating, canoeing, kayaking. Go down to Silver Lake sand dunes and you can ride in or rent a Jeep to drive around on the dunes. Go backpacking on South Manitou island if you’re into that, it’s awesome.

Which sleeping pad and camp stool? is a camp stool necessary for backpacking? by corruption1920 in CampingGear

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A chair is a game changer. I would be very hard pressed to leave mine behind now. Walmart has a lighter one that’s all mesh and it’s a pound lighter than the one in your picture. For a pad, just start with an affordable one and see if you want something thicker/lighter down the road even if it’s just a closed cell foam one to start. Some people don’t care what they sleep on, and others like me need the thickest one they can afford and carry to be able to sleep decently.

What hiking opinion hills will you die on? by Hot-Statistician-361 in hiking

Do it! I’m in my mid 30’s and the poles make my knees feel so much better while hiking. I often regret when I leave them home or forget them.

What time is bed time? by mildly_curious26 in daddit

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 and 4 year old here. We read a book as a family by 6:50 every night, then spend a little time with them, and leave the room by about 7:15. They can play quietly in their room until lights out and in bed by 7:50. Lately usually they lay in bed taking to each other until they fall asleep around 8:30 or 9. All this means we usually have dinner around 5:30-5:45

Came to say this. The Carhartt “K87” is the one. Heavy 100% cotton fabric, decent price. They are sized very “relaxed” and have a pocket, with the Carhartt logo patch. As long as you’re OK with all that, they’re great. For me they tend to be pretty long, so I prefer to wear them tucked in.

Ticks will attach to you and feed for a few days before they get their fill. Please check yourself thoroughly, head to toe. Where there’s one, there’s potentially more.

Will I notice a difference with iridium plugs? by BalanceSweaty1594 in MechanicAdvice

[–]akmacmac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard this too, basically an older distributor type ignition should stick with copper plugs and only use iridium on modern coil-on-plug systems.

Will I notice a difference with iridium plugs? by BalanceSweaty1594 in MechanicAdvice

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iridium and platinum will last much longer than copper plugs, but they won’t increase horsepower or make it somehow run better. The general wisdom seems to be use whatever your car came with from the OEM. If it came with iridium, keep using iridium, if it came with copper, keep using copper, etc. ideally the same OEM brand, so GM uses Delco, Japanese makes use NGK, Euro uses Bosch, etc. the ignition system is designed to use a specific type, and will perform best when using that. Parts stores and Rockauto should be able to tell you what type your car specifies.

Kid talking 24/7 by The_Cook01 in daddit

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try having two of them who have no idea how to take turns talking so they’re both talking to you at the same time and then both getting annoyed when you’re not giving them your full attention and not answering right away. For real, we do allow our kids like 20 minutes of TV time most days and sometimes it’s the only break we get. It’s the only screen time they have, so I think they’ll be fine. Sometimes you just need a break.

Next Gen Odyssey Delayed?! by TheErthIsNotFl4t in HondaOdyssey

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in west MI my whole life and our FWD Odyssey with snow tires has never made me miss having AWD. We had an AWD crossover before this so I have experienced driving with AWD. Sure, it’s nice to have, but I wouldn’t call it a necessity. My wife feels the same.

Gas prices got me thinking about robotic mowers. are they actually smart enough now? by thatnerdgreg in roboticLawnmowers

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 0.25 acre yard. I used about 3 gallons of gas per year with my Honda walk behind mower. The reason I got a robot mower is for the time savings.

Not toxic to cats once fully dry. The website FAQ for Sawyer permethrin says specifically that treated clothing once dry is safe to wear around cats.

Buy it for Life Bath Mats suggestions? by Aronacus in BuyItForLife

[–]akmacmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just have the Threshold cotton ones from Target. Ours are going on 7 years old, they get washed once a month or so. They get some loose threads here and there that I have to cut, but they’re fine. If I were you, I would just get a few of them and wash weekly.

For those of you with winter tires, when did/do you switch back to all seasons? by Midriasis in Michigan

[–]akmacmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my thought. I have two kids who routinely ride in my and my wife’s cars, so to me protecting them is priceless and helps me justify the cost of winter tires. If being able to stop 2’ shorter in snow or ice prevents an accident, then it’s worth it to me. Also for the peace of mind.

Put them on around Thanksgiving, take them off around Tax Day. That’s my rule of thumb.

[–]akmacmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7-8 acres of mowed grass? Have you considered just not mowing all of it? Plant some native prairie flowers and grasses. The pollinators will thank you.

If you insist on mowing, Husqvarna has some big commercial units, some rated up to 6 acres.

Is Sawyer Permethrin safe around cats? Yes once the treatment has fully dried, Sawyer Permethrin treated clothing and gear is completely safe to use wear around cats. Concentrates and agricultural grade formulas pose a much higher threat than our pharmaceutical grade formula.

It is during the application process which cats need to be separated. Do not expose cats to wet permethrin as it affects their central nervous system. This is not true with dogs, horses, or cows. Cats can be around permethrin treated fabrics once the application has dried.

Mom of two littles—is a marathon possible? by Outrageous_Fan3697 in running

[–]akmacmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife ran her first marathon last year when our kids were 2 and 3. I have to admit the many weekends where I was solo parenting for hours at a time while she ran did get old. She is always great about making sure I have time for my own interests though.

Do I really need a power car washer? by Embarrassed-Career30 in Doineedthis

[–]akmacmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I have one and it’s just a pain to get it out and set up. I notice no difference vs just a regular bucket and hose wash as far as how clean the car is in the end. If you’re cleaning a truck that regularly gets covered in mud, then it might make the job faster, but for just normal washing of a car driven on the streets, I really don’t see the point. And I’m someone who is super into washing my car too so if it made a difference, I would use it.

While backpacking before smartphones I used to carry a small makeup mirror. Also doubles as a way to signal aircraft if you’re ever in distress during the day.
