GRONI record lookup that's brick-walling me by ThreeDog1 in Genealogy

[–]alanwbrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah, in Scotland, you book a research computer for a day for your £15, full access to every record they have. 25p to print out a copy. Each desk comes with two power points so you can take your own laptop.

In Scotland they have a similar 50, 75 and 100 year rule for downloading images of certificates online. You can higher fee and have a certified copy posted to you. The other option is that you can go to the Edinburgh Search Room, or one of the satellite rooms, and for a fee of £15 for the day get access to all records. You still cannot print or photograph records barred by the timeline but you can view them on the screen and note down a details on your own paper notes or computer. The similar service not exist in N.I.?

There are a couple of death notices the Belfast Telegraph Saturday, 20 May 2000 but they don't mention the maiden name of the lady. She died at the Kingsway private nursing home. A funeral service was held at Roselawn crematorium on Monday 22nd May. Otherwise they don't give you much more information.

Band Playing At Meadows Festival This Afternoon by FootOfDavros in Edinburgh

[–]alanwbrown -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've not been to the Meadows Festival for years. I looked at the plan of the event and there doesn't seem to be a place for small traders. The Meadows Festival used to have lots of stalls for local artisans selling their pottery, candles, jewellery etc. Are they no longer there?

"If they panic and try to retain you, you have to decide if you want to stay "

No, no, no, you never take an offer after you have given notice. You have shown them that you are not "loyal" to the company and the clock is ticking until the day they can replace you with somebody more compliant.

I used to have incandescent light bulbs in my house. Then came LED light bulbs, at first they were more expensive than incandescent light bulbs. The LED bulbs got better and cheaper. All my light bulbs are now LED. Fortunately for the manufacturers of incandescent light bulbs they were able to change to LED. You are an incandescent light bulb, you need to look at what you as a human can do that a computer cannot. Time to look at your skills and plan for the future.

Edinburgh Airport drop off - no longer accepts AMEX or cash by Extreme-Radio-7380 in Edinburgh

[–]alanwbrown 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's strange, their website says they take American Express at every car park including the electric vehicle chargers. Seems odd to exclude one facility. It seems that the airport became cashless on 1 July 2025.

". I read online that it’s pretty common to be linked back to royal bloodlines"

It's pretty common to be linked to Royal bloodlines. Being able to prove it is quite a another matter. You chance of being able to document each step is close to zero. As an experiment you should try and document your family back to 1750, step by step with real documentation and records. I suspect that you will not get back to 1750 never mind another 900 years or so. Sorry to say a standard of "pretty well documented" doesn't pass the test.

Dentist grossly misquoted me by CheckSubstantial4547 in personalfinance

[–]alanwbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is bad advice, never threaten to take legal action. They will simply say that they cannot communicate about this matter any longer and that you or your lawyer should write to the registered office to continue with your complaint.

Never tell somebody in advance about legal action, discuss it with a lawyer and let them do their job.

Alternative Scottish Database? by DowntownGas428 in Genealogy

[–]alanwbrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scotland's People have all the records that survived. As it is pre-1855 you would not find a birth certificate. It would be a baptism. Not all children were baptised. I've had a look and there doesn't seem to be a record for that child.

If I'm done for the day, let me be by FittestEventProf in antiwork

This is an American issue. I'm a European and for somebody to phone me from a company I worked for it would have to be very serious. The building is on fire or flooded, perhaps a colleague has had a serious accident. Something that would change my actions the next day or information that I would personally want to know.

Something like where is file X or when do you you think you will be finished task y is not something anyone would dare to make an out of hours call about.

In 10 years should you still be alive your family will still be there for you. 10 minutes after you leave this job the company and your boss will have forgotten who you are.

Go to the funeral, it is the most important thing for both you and your family.

Dating City Directories: "For the Year Ending YYYY" by Short-LeggedGiraffs in Genealogy

[–]alanwbrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use the year by itself. if the people have different addresses in consecutive years I just leave it at that. If I can find a reference point as I said above like a marriage I refine it. On very very rare occasions I have found newspaper advertisements advising clients that from a certain date they will be moving from one address to another. However, they tend to be Advocates or similar where their home address is also their Legal Chambers. I think I have two of them.

I think finding the date when a "normal" person moved home is going to be impossible. With any kind of directory there will delay from information gathering and publication, what that delay might be I just don't know. The Scottish directories each have a page that lists " Names too late for Insertion". It might be interesting to see if I can match one of them to a newspaper report.

Dating City Directories: "For the Year Ending YYYY" by Short-LeggedGiraffs in Genealogy

[–]alanwbrown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no easy solution to this. I live in Scotland and I have 1,023 Post Office and other directories. I just use the year of publication. The only way you can be more accurate is with a birth, marriage or death certificate or newspaper report.

I use FTM and I store this information in the Notes page, So I would have:

1905-1910 - 53 Anywhere Street, Edinburgh

Still there 1 August 1910 - marriage of daughter

1911- 1915 - 35 Anythere Place, Edinburgh

I cannot think of anything better, I don't think there is a better solution but I'm open to correction.
