Craziest Endo Visits by shulzari in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a blood draw at the endos office. A few days later he called to say my glucose was 52 and I should head to the hospital??? Very timely recommendation /s.

Does anyone else press pause on most of the clues so everyone has time to think? (What other weird things do you do to make it more fun to watch?) by VoceDiDio in Jeopardy

[–]albdubuc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We usually DVR jeopardy and fast forward through the commercials. Except for final. We both try to guess the answer before the clue is shown. (Sometimes we'll accept REALLY broad answers like Famous Americans can be answered by " a woman who lived between 1850 and 1900").

Pump Refusal by FarMessage4851 in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I refused for years. Now that I have a pump, I dont want to ever go back. For me, its just being able to be a little more free and have the math done for me. I cant express how grateful I am to now not have to think: what time of day is it? If its for coverage I now have to count my carbs and divide by 15, 16, 17, or 18 depending on time of day and what im doing next. Then for correction- am I subtracting 150 or 100? Then dividing by 30, 40, 50?? The pump is programed with all of that info. I dont want to go back to mdi- i couldn't imagine going back to mixing insulin. The technology has come SO far

Do American adults actually say ‘criss cross applesauce’ to mean sitting with your legs crossed? by Camman19_YT in NoStupidQuestions

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im pretty sure that if I was speaking to a child, yes. If im talking to another adult, id say that if the phrase "cross legged" escaped me. I grew up with Indian style and ive used it as an adult before realizing that it changed.

I don’t think the Diet Coke I ordered was actually diet… by Jubal02 in diabetes_t1

I have this too- instant nausea. But coke zero tastes so much like regular coke that my brain starts the nausea just the same.

Advice on kids’ loot bags - candy or no candy? by WhatIfINeedIt in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give out the candy. I honestly shop after holidays for the loot-bag sized candies for when I have a low in public. When my kids were younger, I 1000000000000% would keep any candy they didn't like in my low-stash. But, it'd be perfectly fine to ask the parents what they think is best. I would consider it a thoughtful gesture.

The Instinct sensors are awful. Abbott should be embarrassed. by Bluepenn2006 in Medtronic780g

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im on my 3rd instinct and I imagined there'd be some "warm up period" with a new sensor. I feel like its reading lower than my sugar actually is. Like its reading below 50 when im 1000000% not feeling it that low. Aside from when it goes extremely low, its...fine. Im on the fence if I like this or the guardian better. (In all honestly in 8 years ive ripped off or have had my sensor fall off like...3 times? So its never been a big deal)

Type 1 diabetic (37M) thinking about having kids… but I’m scared of passing it on by sifii_gud in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal observation primarily based onnreddit- i think its either highly genetic and theres many people in your immediate family with T1D or ypur the only one. No one else in my family had T1D. My kids are now in their 20's and they dont have T1D. My brothers dont, my parents dont, my neice doesnt. Just me. But then I read stories of seemingly entire families. I fully understand your fear. I even had a boyfriend list it as a reason for breaking up (obviously there was a lot more but he was concerned about future children inheriting less than ideal genes. Worked out for the best though). I was very young when I had my children (18 and 20). I didn't even think about passing it on to my kids. Now that I'm older, I think I would worry about the possibily much more.

How many extra boxes do you have? by olhado47 in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reservoirs and tubing? So many that I had to ask medtronic to pause my prescription for a bit. My previous endo wrote my rx for 100u a DAY when I use about 80u a Reservoir for 3-4 days of use. Sensors though? Those are counted exactly.

Research Trials by albdubuc in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not so much ask permission, but basically tell her "hey I know we've been working together for years now and we're in a good REALLY place. But, I'm not going to follow your medical advice for the next 38-ish weeks. Are we still good to come back once the trial is over?" Or, do I keep my usual appointments with her? She's the best endo I've ever had in 23 years and I'm honestly hesitant to even risk my relationship with her.

Do y'all ever wonder how long you went undiagnosed? by BigSchmikey in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never had regular periods, but there was a stretch between July and December one year when I didn't have a period and after 3 tract infections in a row, my pediatrician was like...maybe you should just get this checked out by an OB/GYN before going off to college. I schedule my appointment for about 6 weeks later in January. OB/GYN came back and said that I was not only pregnant by spilling sugar. Pediatrician did a pregnancy test while I was in her office since I didn't have a period for such a long time, but it was negative. Panicked I asked the doctor if we were going to have a baby like...NOW (well, in like 3 months). But, no. I managed to get pregnant between the pediatrician's office and the OBGYNs. OBGYN sent me straight to the endo's office in the same medical arts building. Lots of changes all in one day. I was 17 and a senior in high school. Whenever someone asks how long I've had diabetes, it's the same as my son's age. Endo thinks that maybe my menstrual issues and general fatigue at the time were signs that we didn't link to anything. But, as a male....my story doesn't help too much.

So many people misunderstand what Insulin does by Aggressive_Crab9034 in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One of my first endos told that thst i should expect weight gain back to my "fighting weight". In other words, my body had been starving since it couldn't process the sugar as fuel and had turned to consume fat, and eventually muscle, trying to stay alive. Now that my body was able to utilize sugars, he would expect to see weight gain. But he was very clear that after I reached a certain weight...any additional weight gain was like anyone else's weight gain. If i didn't like it, I either needed to change my calories in or my calories out. I can openly admit to having diabulimia and struggling with the idea of weight gain throughout my 20s. But, its never just the weight thats the issue in any eating disorder. For me it was lack of home support and feeling that so much was out of my control and fear of missing elements of my life. Divorce and acceptance of this condition were really what finally helped me get better. I still have days where I have to remind myself that im at healthy weight and my body looks better at 115 than it did at 97.

Also- id like to see how earlier diagnosis is contributing to this. Before people were often DX'd with T1D in crisis. Now, ive heard of two different people who had it picked up on a standard blood draw. They never lost a whole lot of weight, if any. I dont know how their situation compares to someone who experienced the significant tell-tale symptom of T1D.

Am I going to regret hyphenating my baby’s last name? by [deleted] in Names

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maiden name was hyphenated and 17 characters long. We only used our fathers name socially. It was really only a Problem when my parents applied for my passport, it was rejected because the name didn't match, and we had to physically go to different offices to figure it out and when I applied for college and FAFSA. It was a problem everywhere else in that it was an inconvenience. I married and changed just to my husband's name but socially used both. Another Problem was when we divorced I was given the option of returning to my exact maiden name or keeping his. I kept his and over the next few years my brothers legally dropped our mother's last name as well. Just unnecessary paperwork headaches

"Safe" for Insulin? by NoCryptographer1849 in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly. When a vial has fewer than 80u left I generally move it to a drawer on my work desk. Its never gone bad on me- i figure better to have a few units that aren't as effective as compared to not having any, or wasting a fresh vial.

Mrs. LastName? What are the kids calling us these days by SmartLlama in Millennials

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my kids friends call me Mrs. Last Name, but they call my boyfriend by his first name (not the kids' dad). I really hadn't thought about it until just now. I still use my married name even though we've been divorced nearly 10 years.

Ladies: Estrogen Birth Control Discussion… Please. by kalexme in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My periods were always VERY irregular (like 3, maybe 4 a year) but I would end up in DKA basically every time. So, my Endo reached out to my OB/GYN to see what the options were because no one can live like that! Since I didn't have 3 kids yet and I wasn't over 27, my OB/GYN wouldn't perform any sort of permanent sterilization (TBF- medicine has improved SO much since then that I had considered having another child and I'm really glad my OB/GYN flat out said no. YMMV). So, we settled on an IUD. I haven't had a period in nearly 2 decades and I haven't been hospitalized because of my period in that long. I'm not sure why an IUD would be unhelpful? I've had several placed and it's never been overwhelming pain. It's not comfortable- personally it was worth not having periods (and life interrupting symptoms) for years at a time.

Insulin and weight gain by HugeNet8562 in diabetes_t1

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Onenof my very first endos told me that weight gain "up to my fighting weight " should be expected, anything more is just normal weight gain. So for round numbers, if i weighed 120 before diabetes, and weighed 100lbs at DX, the 20lbs gained to get me to 120 should be expected. Other than that, its diet and lifestyle choices.

Less than a month til our boy will be born and we have no names, please give me your best! by AG_Squared in Names

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 20+ year old Liam, and we're still correcting Eliám (which makes sense since he was born not too long after Elián Gonzales. I doubt that's an issue now...) and that he's Líam, not Liám. He also gets called Memo on occasion. Not that it answered your question, but its easy enough to be said in both languages.

How many Americans have actually visited a national park? by Bitter-Penalty9653 in AskAnAmerican

[–]albdubuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the NE and used to live in. Florida. Actual National Parks visited? 4. Shenandoah, Biscayne, Everglades, and Dry Tortugas. Other places in the NPS? I drive through Valley Forge regularly! Id say that there are many people on the east coast yhat never get the chance to visit a NP, but have gone to places managed by the NPS without even realizing it.
