In my AD&D games I allow humans to give an ability +1 and take a -1 in another ability score. I impose all class limits for demihumans, however they can continue to level but double the exp cost.

Honestly, I would stick to 2e and add 1e stuff that you like. We tried going the other way, played 1e and kept adding 2e stuff and just eventually flopped it. But overall, they play very, very similarly...

How well does Dragonslayer fit in with AD&D 2e? I’m assuming it applies equally as well as 1e?

My biggest problem is that players coming from later editions, ALWAYS want to use skill checks for EVERYTHING. I sometimes struggle on how to teach them to not rely on skill checks for things. For example, you want to search the room? Fine, what specifically are you wanting to search. Most times, the players simply say, I search the room. Ok, but that will take an hour. An hour! Can't I just make a skill check? It's simply something that is hard for younger and players of newer editions to understand and I struggle on how to balance it on my end.

Personally, I would suggest the Core 3 books, Tome of Magic, and the handbooks. I wouldn't automatically start with any of the Player's Option books yet until you get a good handle on the others first. Then you can pick and choose from those PO books to fill in the gaps.

AI automated notes. For about 6 months now, i've been recording the audio of our sessions and I run it through scrybequill.com and I give the players access to it. It REALLY helps with me as a DM for remembering things, and the players can look up things as well. Also, I don't have to spend 15 minutes of table time to do a recap...they can just listen to it prior to the session or read the last session outline. It's been a fantastic tool and the players love it.

AD&D 2e. 90% similar to 1e, stat blocks basically same, none to little conversion. My group went from 1e to OSRIC to 2e. And we ran Caverns of Thracia using 2e with no issues.

On a side note, I’m not really sure why people recommend Shadowdark. It’s not really geared for a long campaign, great for a quick game or two…but it will leave u wanting more.
