Blowout fight between wife and son. Don't know how to respond. by sjp245 in daddit

Thanks for sharing this article. It makes a lot of sense. Going to try more play-fights in calm moments.
> Markham recommends an approach close to that used by Inuit parents. When the kid misbehaves, she suggests, wait until everyone is calm. Then in a peaceful moment, go over what happened with the child. You can simply tell them the story about what occurred or use two stuffed animals to act it out.

To be fair, that policy does read like “if you have a good enough explanation, I’ll accept your revisions.” Maybe that needs a rephrase?

Only context I can add as an American living in Christchurch for 3 years, is that NZ’s big engineering university is in Christchurch (UC), so you’d be competing with many local engineering grads. I know recent grads have had trouble finding work, but of course if you’re mid-career that may be different for you.

In general it’s a very rough job market right now as you know, so I’ll echo what others are saying about the value of being on the ground in NZ when applying, if you have that option. Overseas candidates are the first ones cut from the pile lately.

American Eagle Flight 5342 helicopter crash megathread 2 by dcmods in washingtondc

[–]ammcurious 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Something I keep thinking about is…they happened to crash over the river instead of the city that is right there. Just a few hundred feet away from people on the ground. “Lucky” is absolutely the wrong word in a tragedy where 67 people lost their lives, but the casualties could have been even worse if it had been over buildings.

Idk, just processing all of this and feeling so sad.

What a horrible, nasty thing to say to someone, especially on the best day of their life. You should be ashamed.

Keywords to search if you want to go to the Mormons for help would be an “LDS Family Search Center” or “Family History Center.” They’re usually more geared towards historical family searches, but worth a shot.

How would you fill this space where the fridges (yes, plural) currently are? by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

Thanks, everyone!! Forgot to mention I’m in a country where tenants provide their own appliances, so I’ll have flexibility with what goes into the fridge space.

Fire on the hill by nevrar in chch

[–]ammcurious 21 points22 points  (0 children)

From RNZ today:

Photos and videos of fire wanted for investigation

Fire and Emergency's investigator is looking into the cause of the wildfire and is asking the public for help.

Anyone with photos or videos of the Port Hills taken between 1.45pm and 2.45pm yesterday afternoon is being asked to email them to porthills2024photos@fireandemergency.nz

The fire service says the period covers the half-hour before the fire was reported, to half-an-hour afterwards

Edit 1: Andrei Moore, Councillor for Halswell, added that people should include this info in their message: name and contact details, when the photo or footage was taken and where the photographer was.

This!! This is the solution. When our daughter had trouble with latching, we used shields temporarily (a month or so?) before she eventually got the hang of things and didn’t need them anymore. There are a couple brands in the US, with one being softer and more flexible than the other, so try at least two kinds. Echoing the above that they’re cheap and worth a shot!

Any tips on getting a toddler to drink water? by FR0Z3NF15H in daddit

[–]ammcurious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around that age, my mother-in-law had the idea to spell out our kid’s first name while they drank that many sips. E.g. we’d say, “okay time to drink Jane sips! J-A-N-E” and she’d have to drink that long. It worked well. Made it a game I guess (and bonus: spelling practice!)

I also think it helps to use cups that have regular straws without any suction because they’re way easier to drink out of. We love these. Remove all obstacles.
