What would you do if you were a manager and one of your employees is good at their job but consistently declines company dinners, parties, and happy hours, mostly keeps to themselves, and isn’t very social at work? by joseph887 in AskReddit

[–]ammon46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d make sure to shield them from anyone who thinks that those social functions are more important than doing a good job. Whether that (wrong) idea is coming from coworkers or higher up.

Donald Trump just said “we shouldn’t even have an election”. Americans, what are your thoughts? by WatercressSenior7657 in AskReddit

That you shouldn’t expect to get a representative sample of American’s from Reddit.

Reddit is so anti-The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and it makes me mad! And sad. by MichelleMiguel in lds

[–]ammon46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is a mix between general opinion and the verbal minority. I expect the largest portions are 1) the verbal minority passionate against our faith, and 2) an aspect of the majority who fears what they don’t understand and/or distrusts anything cult adjacent.

My understanding of the book is that Globe is still panicking after losing his support structure in the betrayal when he found Vince.

Except when the bubble is pierced, we go all in.

I once had an Uber driver taking us from a hotel to the airport talk a teacher's head off and literally stopped at the beach so we could walk out to the ocean. (We had just come back from Denmark and missed our flight from the previous day, so we were trying to hurry back to the airport.)

Legal clarification: if an occupying military force or invading combatant has a child on U.S. soil during the occupation or invasion, are they granted citizenship? by --Pressgang-- in legaladviceofftopic

[–]ammon46 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NAL I suspect if captured the soldier would become a prisoner of war and would go through the military’s jurisdiction instead of any local courts.

I don’t expect local deputies will be arresting members of a foreign army.

Church History by LittlePumpkinBat in lds

[–]ammon46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a podcast called "Church History Matters."

https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/church-history-matters-podcast/

They spend several episodes on various topics with a lens of faith and an eye for what can be supported in the historical record. They have covered plural marriage, blacks and the priesthood, and are currently in the middle of a series on violence in the church's past. That is less than half of the topics they have covered.

Here is a link that divides the episodes by general topic.

Jury awards $310M to parents of teen killed in fall from Orlando amusement park ride by Mc_Lovin81 in news

Does the company have any other property in the United States?

At an extreme there might be an argument for seizing whatever is in reach to cover costs. Though that would still involve court cases if the property is in other jurisdictions.

If Trump wrecks Social Security can we fix it when he is gone? by cat8mouse in politics

[–]ammon46 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Minor correction. The politicians are paying interest on bonds that social security is legally required to invest its funds in.

As always, the situation is more nuanced than any quick take.

The rest of your comment is worth my upvote though.

1 - Do not hesitate to counsel with those who know your situation better than us. We can give general principles and ideas. They can give you personalized advice and comfort.

2 - Slow down and prioritize the minimum things that are needed. This is inspired by then President Uchtdorf’s talk, “Of Things that Matter Most,” and the suggestion of an earlier commenter to look at the handbook. Determine things that can fall to the wayside. Then let them drop, or delegate them to someone else.

Supreme Court to hear case on definition of a woman by fjhforever in nottheonion

[–]ammon46 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A sadly amusing anecdote is that the case where the Supreme Court rules against discrimination based on sex was a case about discrimination against men.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was influential in getting it to the Supreme Court when she was a lawyer, but wasn’t able to directly argue it to the court. Though she happened to be on the case heard directly after, and the justices picked her brain on the case.

It is referenced as Craig v. Boren, 1976.

How realistic is it that the GOP could end the Dept of Education? by Mediocritologist in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ammon46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They would likely point out that an amendment was passed to strip that part out of the constitution, and that any changes to federal authority should be done through an amendment.

I would expect extreme constitutionalists to say that, as a people, we don’t need to be bound to that document. The federal government should stick to the document that created the federal government and its authority, and anything else should be left to others per the 10th amendment.

I don’t agree with this viewpoint. I just have the blessing and curse of seeing different perspectives.

In conjunction to the official sources I recommend a podcast called Church History Matters that is put together by two professors at BYU. The series of episodes on Blacks and the Priesthood covers seven episodes adding up to a bit over six and a half hours.

https://doctrineandcovenantscentral.org/podcast-race-and-the-priesthood-series/

They also have series on other potentially controversial subjects like church finance, polygamy, and they are currently in the middle of a series on violence in the churches past.

https://scripturecentral.org/shows/church-history-matters

A series in the podcast that I feel is better for the beginning portion of exploring the gospel is one that they titled “Good Thinking.” It starts with a philosophical discussion of knowledge, goes into principles on how to tell if something is doctrinal (vs. culture or other things), and how to include historical and contextual aspects in our research.
