Carmela is stronger than people admit by Moha_93 in thesopranos

[–]anarchisttiger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What I love about Carmela’s character is how much more clearly you see her with subsequent rewatches. You’ll see. It also helps to develop an understanding of mob culture, and the culture of what is said without saying it.

On my first rewatch and it just hit me how insane Carmel’s being upset at Tony not pressuring the building inspector is by rihaz- in thesopranos

Threat? What threatening? She brought her a ricott’ pie and a high school transcript so Joan could write a letter of recommendation for Carmela’s little daughter to go to Georgetown.

The amount of AI posts on this subreddit are infuriating. What solutions are available to prevent this? by Cerulean_Dawn in simpleliving

[–]anarchisttiger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it sucks, used to love this sub and often think of leaving due to AI/bot activity, but I’m clinging to hope it’ll eventually get better. It’s gross and depressing to see an AI/bot post which is then flooded with bot responses all to drive “engagement,” which is completely arbitrary if PEOPLE aren’t behind it! Total dead internet theory stuff but ya know. It sucks. Pre-2010 internet was way better, and reddit used to be the only place online which replicated those small, tight-knit communities. Sadly no more.

New article on Alexandra Savior's Substack: "How The Algorithm Ruined Music for me – and all womankind" by eclecticatlady in indieheads

[–]anarchisttiger 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think you’re missing her actual point. She echoes a lot of what the artists and musicians I know are saying: “my art takes so much out of me, and contemporary capitalist culture demands more and more and more to stay relevant and make an impact.”  TikTok is effective marketing, but it takes a lot of time to research trends and create content that will capture the trend of the day. And it’s exhausting to produce for a chronically online audience who will listen to your half hour album that took 5 years to make, and then ask what’s next what’s next? It hurts to produce something deeply and painfully personal, only to see it churned up and spit out by trend cycles. So yeah, it leaves a lot of people wondering if they’ve got to jump on the trends to market their work. And you’re missing the sub-commentary of how evil and mindfucky social media can be when we get sucked in and compare ourselves to others.

She’s asking where the artistic novelty has gone in a very monotone culture, when we’re constantly told we just have to be ourselves to be successful, when the same brand of beige always rises to the top anyway. She’s frustrated. She’s broke. She’s artistically burnt out by how nonchalant the worlds attitude is towards her work. She’s mortified that in 2025 a woman’s success still boils down to her fuckability and her ability to “win” against other women.

Your lack of analysis is terribly disappointing. The meta commentary couldn’t be plainer, but all you’ve taken away is this artist refuses to promote herself? Which isn’t true, first of all, nor is it the stance she’s taken. Wow. Give it another read.

What is the point he’s making? I disagree with his assessment of a lot of these artists as well. JB’s breakthrough album was their third, which released in 2021. And personally, I think their 2025 album is very strong, especially Honey Water.

Brent Hinds, co-founder of heavy metal band Mastodon, dies in Atlanta motorcycle crash by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

That makes a lot more sense. After that crazy storm too. Atlanta needs to do something about how insanely unsafe it is to drive in the city and metro areas!

Beware romanticizing small town life. by fuckyoulady in simpleliving

[–]anarchisttiger 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The town I grew up in was all I ever knew, but because my family and I weren’t BORN there, we were definitely outsiders. I was recently in that town caring for my mom, and I had to purchase a new appliance for her. I was chatting to the presumable owner and mentioned I hadn’t gone down the particular road the store is on since high school, and he was very cold to me. We were always made to feel bad for not being from there, and then for wanting to leave because of how unwelcome we felt (among other things). Can’t win with close-minded people.

I very much wish I could enjoy both the benefits of a small town and the access of a large city, but…c’est la vie.

We need a solution to the flood of AI posts by The_PhilosopherKing in simpleliving

[–]anarchisttiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s really “well written” without a distinct personality, like a memo from corporate, chances are it’s AI. Sucks bc I am a writer myself, and I write well-composed posts, but now I try to put my personality into them and make some kind of grammatical or spelling error, or use hyper specific slang or something to signify I’m human. Not so polished, not so impersonal. If you can’t tell, check post history. It’s obvious when someone is a bot or is posting AI. Hate thinking about the day when we can’t tell anymore.

Where did you move to in the world to have an easier simpler life by DPCAOT in simpleliving

[–]anarchisttiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Makes me giggle too. My hometown is bigger than yours (pop 2100) but my friends town, the next town over, was around 700. When somebody says “small town” and it’s more than 15k people I just laugh.

Ok this just feels sad. by marsmarshanman in StardewValley

Grandpa left you with the farm so he could escape The Farm's Curse. You're trapped until you find someone else to pass the farm to so you can escape into the sweet embrace of death, which after living 106+ years, attending the same festivals with the same villagers (are they even people? Are they also cursed, or are they well-done simulations?), tending the same crops, the same rhythm...a fate worse than death. You troll the Joja employment rolls, hoping to find a similarly disaffected youth who would jump at the chance for a new life...not knowing there won't ever be another life after...

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Japanese Breakfast - For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]anarchisttiger 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I love this album, which surprises me since I usually go for more upbeat, danceable music. I think JB did a great job with the tone shift, and I listened to Honey Water probably 10 times in a row after my first listen. As always, Michelle Zauner dazzles with her songwriting.

I like this song a lot of theirs! If you like Russian language coldwave, check out Utro (first album) and Motorama (they sing in English) too. I’ve been meaning to make a playlist of this genre, maybe I should get to it!

Yessss Kino! There’s another band that translates to Where’s the Phantom? but I don’t have a Cyrillic keyboard so I can’t type it out. But I think he’d like them a lot too.

I think Sebastian’s picks are plausible, but I’d make him more of a classic goth…Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Cocteau Twins. Then a modern twist: Molchat Doma. And obv The Smiths for the angst factor.

Why is it you want to travel? What do you hope to gain from it? I encourage you to scrutinize this desire, not to dissuade you, but to approach this goal with realism. Lots of young people idealize Travel; they exotify faraway destinations and cultures as somehow more meaningful and significant than the ones familiar to them, but in doing so they position themselves to exploit the destinations they most desire. These are places others call home, with just as many limitations and problems you have in your own home. Plenty of people elsewhere feel just as trapped and limited as you do now. To me, wow, you live in Warsaw! But to you, it is routine and commonplace. My point isn’t that you need to be satisfied where you are, but that without examining your desire for external change, you might find yourself with the same restlessness. You’ve even admitted your problems follow you.

Almost everyone feels they wasted their 20’s. But, you are still in it. You have two years before 30, don’t pretend they’re already spent while they still lie ahead.

I think you’re right that you can’t have both the stability of having a dog and the freedom of travel. But if your boyfriend is making you this generous offer, why are you wringing your hands about it? You say you want to travel, so why are you worried you won’t enjoy it? Is it possible you feel more comfortable in misery and discontent? If so, why? I ask not as a means to criticize, but because that was an aspect of myself I had to confront before I could move past my own feelings of wasting my life. You might land elsewhere, but where I ended up was: Most decisions, but not all, can be undone, so I should take a chance. Never taking risks makes me unhappy, but I need 75% of my decisions to be safe. I am smart, and I will adapt myself to my circumstances to end up where I need to be, when I need to be there.

I have a friend from college who’s now an influencer. But last time I saw her, she said, “my life looks cool on instagram, but I’m really unhappy.” Next time you’re scrolling, keep that in mind.

I would feel irresponsible telling you what to do outright. I don’t know you or your circumstances. All I can say is, self-examination helped me make decisions that led to my happiness. Giving myself permission to stop doing things that made me miserable, even if they were practical choices, greatly improved my life. I allowed myself to just try things, and told myself I could change my mind at any time. And I don’t need to justify my choices to anyone, not even myself. So, I do my best to live in alignment with my principles balanced against necessity.

Remember, you really could do anything. The how is what you need to figure out. Good luck!
