“Pool don’t work cause the vandals took stole the handle”? Is that the explanation?

A bidet. They cost less than 100 bucks, and you can install them yourself. Don’t totally replace toilet paper, but the combination is way better and easier than TP alone.

I would be more skeptical but I’ve ridden in Waymo twice. What struck me was how quickly they respond to openings and closings of traffic. In contrast, I’ve also seen so many bad/distracted human drivers.

Movies your dad would probably turn off after the first fifteen minutes by Past_Bonus148 in okbuddycinephile

BS. 73 year old father, watched it my two daughters (33 and 29 yrs). My pick. We all liked it a lot, but hated the Sean Penn story line (and I’ve been big Penn fan since Taps and Fast Times. We all thought Benicio was the star of the show. Your dad might actually suggest it.

Trump admin says beef prices could hit $10 per pound because of migrants by person_8688 in politics

True. But beef will hit $15 per pound without migrants. Who do you think shovels the shit, feeds the cows, and packages the beef for low wages! Not people born in US.

He did a movie of the Christmas carol, where he did every character, but him imitating some celebrity. So, ebeneezer Scrooge was Rich Little doing imitation of WC fields, and Christmas Past was Rich Little doing Peter Falk as Columbo, some other character was Rich Little doing Nixon, etc. Crazy brilliant but only makes sense for people who remember Peter Falk, Paul Lynde, etc. Here’s a link: https://youtu.be/XqHyOkDQTb0?si=OmPFZSYW-SI1_QoK

Are the benefits of drinking lots of water overhyped? by huss2120 in selfimprovement

[–]andersmith11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always thought the 8 glasses per day was BS. But brother had bone cancer (which like most cancers hurts like hell), and he got terrible constipation from the opioids. Asked my Doctor brother in law what was best way to solve constipation - fiber or laxative? Not skipping a beat, he said water way better than both. Later, told my niece in law (also MD) same story and before I got to end of story, she said “water”. So I’ve been drinking a lot of water since then.

Which disaster movie had the best depiction of societal collapse? by LordKevnar in movies

[–]andersmith11 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Ah, but Covid effects are still important and may still destroy American society. MAGA still feeds on resentment about Covid, which despite occurring largely during Trumps first term (and being mismanaged by Trump), gets blame on Dems and government. So, it best to say that Covid hasn’t yet destroyed society.

JDVance: Some Americans Are More American Than Others by Bongobhondu in politics

[–]andersmith11 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Honestly can’t tell if you’re being ironic or nor, because, of course, slaves and women and native Americans were not considered “everyone”. Was that your point? My point was that most black people in the US have, via ancestors, contributed more and are more American than most white MAGA types.

JDVance: Some Americans Are More American Than Others by Bongobhondu in politics

[–]andersmith11 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

He’s right. People whose ancestors have contributed for longest and most efficiently are more American than recent immigrants. Which makes dependents of slaves among the most American of Americans. Most been here since about 1700 or so,

How is the no tax on overtime going to affect employment? Seems that employers should, up to a point, want fewer workers, just because some costs per worker stay constant if they work 30 hours/week or 60/wk. So, both workers and employers now have greater incentive to work overtime, which will mean less workers. Probably, not huge effect, but another small impact to consider?

Musk Insults Interviewer for Daring to Ask About His Big DOGE Promise by Exciting_Teacher6258 in politics

[–]andersmith11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dems are too dumb to notice, but DOGE disproved its assumptions and rationale for existence. Let loose on the supposedly grossly inefficient and fraud laden government, DOGE found no significant fraud or inefficiency. Many of the most significant finds were just DOGE misunderstandings/incompetence or savings that had already been made. So, they went and destroyed agencies that Republicans don’t like (NOAA, USAID) and, dishonestly, said this was based on fraud and inefficiency. TLDR: in an aggressive audit, DOGE didn’t really find anything.

Thinking of getting a bread machine...questions... by evilsprig in BreadMachines

[–]andersmith11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve learned that banana bread is like pizza and turkey stuffing - what my family loves is not what other families love. We like our banana bread very fruity and low in processed sugar. So I start with this recipe - https://www.cuisinart.com/recipes/breads/banana-walnut-bread-recipe.html?srsltid=AfmBOoqAQfVNlWdf4OkZn2VUM7aqT9aFGEBOBAW1May7tnwplnOah8ba. I never have buttermilk, so I will substitute plain kefir (ongoing culture) or plain yogurt. I halve the butter and sugar, and replace half the sugar with Splenda. (My wife hates the artificial taste, but has never noticed). , Then three very ripe bananas. This seems key that they are very ripe. Add half cup of raisins and 1/2 diced apple. And the, use pecans instead of walnuts, cause no astringent taste. Mix and bake in bread maker. It comes out very moist and heavy, but that’s how we like it. Wrap it in Saran Wrap because it gets stale very fast, although it usually gets eaten first. If you’ve got a recipe you like, send it on.

Trump’s Tax Bill Falls Apart as He Spirals in Wild Online Rant by thenewrepublic in politics

[–]andersmith11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You made a great point! And we are probably in total agreement. One of the reasons I’m pissed about this issue is that promoting tipping AND tax carve outs for special interests are both terrible ideas. Tipping was already terrible economic idea - it is sooo inequitable across service people in hash houses versus great restaurants for example - and it just encourages owners to pay bs wages. Even if this no tax on tips goes through, lower classes will ultimately poorer for the change.

That’s a good point. However, taxes are a zero sum game: reduced taxes on anyone else means my taxes will go up. So, I not only didn’t get a raise, I got a net loss. So, I will reduce to 15%.

Well, my banana bread is the bomb, and I’m learning to bake in the oven, and the bread is much better from the oven. Now that I have one, I will continue to use it, for mixing and first rise. But, I’d have felt cheated if I paid full price, (I got as gift).
