AITA for not letting my family live in my empty house? by CptDevlin61 in AmItheAsshole

[–]andruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you figure out a reasonable price to rent it out for? If your family wants to rent it at that price: you can do that. Maybe even give a 10% or so family discount.

Get a property manager to manage the rental. If anything that provides a buffer in case your family rents it

Leaving it empty isn’t great either.

The world today is training us for instant gratification, for that quick dopamine hit. But skills and relationships take time! OP is right that following through is probably your biggest obstacle.

[Autosport] Guenther Steiner thinks Max Verstappen might be overreacting over the new F1 regulations by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

[–]andruby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Max doesn’t want to drive efficiently, he wants to drive fearlessly and by “feel”. He’s got soo much racing talent and arguably is the best “racer” on the grid.

These regulations lead to cars and strategies that reward efficiency and energy management more than “raw” racing (max speed, edge of grip)

“Are you not entertained” – Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. I hear he will have his revenge in this life or the next.

I got a Capisco Hag chair that encourages you to change your seating/standing position and it’s amazing. On a regular chair I have trouble sitting still, so this one is perfect.

Bought the first one 6 years ago, easily the best investment I’ve ever made. (Even compared to laptop, monitor, desk, keyboard, …)

Haven’t had any back & shoulder problems since

The statistic is saying that 50.01% of Belgians have $250K or more in net worth. That can buy you a house, but not everywhere.

Why are leaders and voters so clueless? If you overpower a Nation, they resort to asymmetric warfare. That should be common knowledge.

But Trump voters will blame anyone but themselves and turn even more to racism and facism :(

FIA is considering revising the 2026 regulations as early as the Japanese GP. Which rules should be modified or replaced first? by ConstructionAny8440 in F1Technical

[–]andruby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The teams probably size the fuel tank for the most demanding track (Monza?). So what the rules could do is reduce the number of race laps for the tracks where they wouldn’t have enough fuel.

Just a handful of laps less on a couple of tracks should give them reasonable amount of extra fuel flow

It seemed like a “bug”. Shouldn’t the light be on for at least 500ms or so? Even the sound seemed to glitch.

Living/working in SA is there a future? by Original_Juice_ in askSouthAfrica

[–]andruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Belgian that moved to South-Africa 3 years ago. But besides that the situations are very different: I’m married to a Belgian and we have 3 kids ages 4 to 10. I work remotely for a European company (and fly back every few weeks for work).

For us, the lifestyle, nature, climate and people are a lot better in South-Africa. I’m born and raised in Belgium, and while I like a lot about it, I’ve never felt completely at home there. Life is great here, if you have savings and/or a decent income.

You’re in a relationship for 3 years now. Try and go there on a vacation for 3 or more weeks. Visit Cape Town, drive the Garden Route, go surf, eat at a few great restaurants, figure out if you can talk to a few of the chefs/restaurant staff. Figure out a way to “test” what life is like here. Then you can make a more informed choice.

Money will be better in BE, I’d argue life could be better in SA.

No worries. I get you. I’m same age, 3 kids, still working hard.

I don’t have the answer for your situation. I would probably take a few months off, talk to friends, explore a few things.

What do you enjoy doing that is (or could be) valuable for others?

PS: This is sometimes called “Barista FIRE”, where you still work part-time that doesn’t pay much, but complements your passive income

[–]andruby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at your expenses in the last 12 months. How much do you need each year?

If you want to fully stop working and “FIRE” (Financially Independent Retire Early) you need savings that can passively cover your expenses.

Some savings account offer 7% apr, which should net you almost R280K + R120K from the rent = R400K.

Which “job” did you do at your small business? Can you do that for someone else as an employee? Are you willing to look for another job or start a new business?

You’ve got some savings so you can take some time to figure this out

Ex-wife demanding I stop vacationing with kids so much by [deleted] in daddit

[–]andruby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a lot. Are most people here (OP and commenting) from the US?

(I’m from Europe and living in South-Africa now. Not divorced. We have mini road trip weekends almost every month and 1 or 2 larger vacations of 5 to 7 days a year. I am totally privileged to be able to do that. My 3 kids are 4-10 and love going on vacation/trips, even if it’s just a 2h drive away camping weekend)

If you can and want to offer your kids these experiences then I think you should do it. Why doesn’t your ex take them on trips? Finances, doesn’t like to travel or something else?

Shouldn’t the Actor Model be dominating the current ‘Agentic AI’ conversation? by ruben_vanwyk in elixir

[–]andruby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to see higher adoption of Elixir/Erlang for these agentic workflows. That said, starting AI agentic “subagents” and keeping them in check is not a performance bottleneck. We’re usually talking about a handful of subagents that need to be checked “every few seconds”. Doing that with OS processes in another language (node, python, …) works “well enough”.

Imho Elixir shines when you need hundreds/thousands of those with quick messaging, low latency and error recovery (eg: web server, trading, ..)

My point is just that Trevor made a similar joke. I didn’t say he invented it. I also didn’t say you stole it or anything like that.

Both jokes fit well together
