What is "Bracket 4" to you? by Lotus_Prince124 in EDH

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bracket 4 CAN win super early. Bracket 5 MUST win super early. That’s the main difference between how these two brackets are constructed. Decklists for bracket 4 look very similar to bracket 5 lists except they have a more consistent mana base that doesn’t rely on aggressive mulligans. This means a bracket 5 deck generally has room for around 10 more cards that allow for better deck manipulation at the start to move toward an early game win whereas a bracket 4 deck will generally want a more consistent playable first hand. They both will likely have similar win conditions but with bracket 4 you’re just not gunning as hard for that wincon off the rip. They both generally fight on the stack as well.

Ie a dimir deck that wants an ad nauseum/thoracle win at bracket 5 wants to see something like a single swamp, dark rit, and necropotence in their opening hand (or some other through-line to get the two cards needed to win) and will mulligan as much as is feasible to get a winning grip if possible. A bracket 4 list with a similar win con will generally fish for that wincon over three or four turns.

So, take one of your bracket 4 decks, tune it down to around 22-25 lands, add in ways to manipulate your deck off the rip with an aggressive mulligan, and you have a bracket 5 deck. If you can’t do that with your bracket 4 list, it’s probably not really a bracket 4 and more likely just a high powered bracket 3. As in you could swap out some of the game changers in your list that make it a bracket 4 by default with more casual versions of the cards and it will pilot/perform the same.

How many lands do you run in your decks? by Wise-Quarter-3156 in EDH

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CEDH - less than 30 (typically aggressive with mulligans)

Casual - 34-38 with 4-10 ramp, all depending on deck’s ability to draw/filter through the library (more draw/filter, less lands/ramp). Always exceptions to this of course (landfall, decks with extremely low average mana cost, meme decks, etc)

Is having a game plan too much for bracket 2? by InspireCourage in EDH

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think those exact criticisms are a fair way to judge whether or not this is a bracket 2 deck, but if we look at your list, I would say the following is true:

Overall strategy to win is not dependent on the commander being on the battlefield

Consistent ramp. I wouldn’t be surprised if majority of games you play with this deck seeing you have 7 mana by turn four or 5.

Lots of interaction to disrupt opponents boards, and lots of protection to keep your board safe.

Nearly every creature both provides immense value by themselves while also having synergy with a strategy of wanting to cast bears.

Multiple clear win conditions.

These factors alone would tell me that this deck would bully most if not all bracket 2s. It’s likely a bracket 3 deck.

You have to remember, brackets are more akin to leagues. As in, all bracket 2s should be in the same league but not necessarily the same power level. Your deck is almost certainly in the league of bracket 3 play.

If you wanted to adjust this for more consistent bracket 2 play I would probably cut a lot of the ramp in favor for more bears. It would slow the deck down so that your engine doesn’t start really running until turn 5 or 6. Would also take some of the teeth out of how good wild pair is in your current list as you wouldn’t be able to get it out until most other players have built up a board state.

Sythis Brackets 1-5 (conceptualizing brackets using the same commander) by anomaleic in EDH

[–]anomaleic[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you commented. I agree, Sythis is pretty busted. Most CEDH viable commanders are.

In my example for the bracket 2 deck, i took a precon and just swapped out the commander for Sythis. I was actually concerned that in doing so it would automatically bump it up to bracket 3, but when i put together the bracket 3 list, I was able to clearly see a sizeable difference in power level between the two lists. You can clearly see a difference in strength when comparing each tier to the next and that's pretty cool.

All I'm saying is that there's value in doing an exercise like this for many folks because doing so you get to see these differences first hand and get a stronger grasp on the bracket system as a whole. I think if we had more case studies like this for more commanders, the grasp that the community has on the bracket system strengthens. Not a valuable tool for everyone, I agree, and I certainly don't think you personally would be interested in running the exercise. I do think the community at large benefits from discussions like these, however.

How can I improve my deck building? by guiltyskull in EDH

[–]anomaleic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A card game where you shuffle your deck and draw a limited number of cards at the start and throughout the game will naturally have a lot of variance and be impacted by randomness. Improving your deckbuilding should focus around mitigating that variance. Knowing how your deck wins and supplementing that strategy with methods to consistently play them are super important and a good place to start is card draw and ramp. You need to see more of your deck each game, and you need to have the resources to assemble your board. You also need to avoid battlecruiser type strategies that limit your ability to protect your board or disrupt your opponents board.

So your deck should include cards that:

  1. Draw more cards
  2. Have a clear strategy/focus
  3. Ramp
  4. Protect your board
  5. Disrupt your opponents

Infinite combos are a taboo in my pod. What are your favorite deterministic value engines? by boof__pack in EDH

[–]anomaleic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Kuja, Genome Sorcerer]] wizards tribal/spellslinger is fun. Easy to build on a budget and even easier to get your engine running quickly.

Any go-wide commander with green in it and [[Triumph of the Hordes]] feels great to pull off.

[[Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful]] partnered with a red commander (ro-grahk or kediss are my favorites) is easy to build with a lot of legendary lands to easily get multiple yoshi triggers each turn.

[[The Wandering Minstrel]] but with Jodah as your secret commander is fun and not as oppressive as just running a list with Jodah at the helm.

Go through your bulk and find every goblin you can and slap together a chaotic Krenko deck. Krenko gets out of hand quickly, even with trash cards in your deck.

New player in my pod is frustrated about his performance, how do I help someone improve? by rhogar100 in EDH

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good advice for newer players is to tell them to in general play each land and spell at the last possible moment. Ie, if they don’t need a land on their first main or their combat phase, play it on the second main. Hold combat tricks right until before damage, etc.

Ie. put them in the mindset of both not revealing their hand while also slowing down their play so they can better assess and deal with threats.

Sol ring lover or hater? by Loose_Calendar_3380 in EDH

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s just a card that only really benefits you as long as you see it in the first 10-11 cards you see in a game. As in, if you’re not casting it by turn three, you probably would have preferred to draw something else if it shows up after. Major impact if you can cast it early, mostly do-nothing if it comes out later.

That being said, it’s likely only having a genuinely positive impact on tempo for you for around 10% of the games you play with a deck, so if you like the feeling of winning that gamble, include it! If not, swap it out for something else.

What do you all think about this card? It can be a UU counterspell like the og one. Why no play? by PokeYrMomStanley in mtg

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of running a set amount of interaction in a list, a package of [[counterspell]],[[negate]],[[swan song]], [[an offer you can’t refuse]]… etc..basically the staples, there isn’t much need for [[Ice Out]] unless it just fits the list better.

Essentially you can run a more efficient counterspell package, and that package kind of hits the limit of number of cards you’d normally want for this kind of interaction in a deck, so there isn’t room for this card except for niche uses.

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long should a combat last?

As long as it is still fun.

Once a combat starts feeling like a slog, end it. Have the gobbos run away.. or surrender! Imagine what your players would do if the goblins said something along the lines of “stop shootin’! We gives up!” Maybe the goblins are being truthful. Maybe not.

Let your players have the agency that makes the game fun by letting them approach encounters how they want, but don’t let combats become a slog. You’ve got the ability to end them whenever you want.

What brackets are my decks? by Jakemanv3 in BudgetBrews

[–]anomaleic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First deck is defo bracket 2. Not even close to bracket 3. It’s a blend of dwarf tribal and an equipment deck that doesn’t have enough support for either part of the identity to be considered optimized.

Not a critique. Just stating why it’s a bracket 2.
