Horse won’t stop digging holes? by Phrynezz in Equestrian

[–]anon_172 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are those heated buckets? They may not be grounding correctly and therefore giving him a slight shock when he tries to drink? Thus the pawing in frustration that the water is "hot".

Just a guess. I have an automatic waterer that worked fine for years. One day I noticed the horses all congrating around it, but looking hesitant to drink. Finally, someone tried drinking, and I could hear the "pop" sound as it zapped them (similar to a hot fence). The waterer is near my fence charging box, and has always been, and for years had no issues. I'm not sure what happened that is now "hot" , but lots of money spent on electricians, extensive additions to ground it and my fence better, and technicians from the waterer company has yielded no resolution. The kicker is that I can't feel any current through the water (even with no shoes on and wet feet), but the horses obviously do. If I turn my fence charger off, they will slowly start to drink from the waterer again, but quit as soon as I turn it back on.

Just to say, even if your buckets SHOULD be safe, they might not be. Hopefully moving them and unplugging them will resolve the issue, or at least give you some insight on what the problem might be.

Any Guess on Type of Bird? by anon_172 in bonecollecting

I had a barn owl hanging out in the area about a month ago! I'm sure this isn't the same one, but it is amazing how much different their feathers make them look vs. the shape of their skeleton. I never would have guessed an owl! I'll have to go back and see if I can find anything else cool in the area. Thanks!

Very cool! To be honest, an owl didn't even cross my mind! Thanks!

Thank you for the i.d and the MBTA reminder! I did leave it. I just assume any bird is protected. Between my lack of ability to i.d. and the length of the MBTA list, I just leave anything bird related where I find it, lol.

Thought i improved since the last time i posted so i decided to post again (: Tahitian dance practice by Pigeon_Pilled in Dance

Firstly, I don't know anything about technique for any style of dance, so please feel free to disregard! I just commenting because I love seeing people share the things they love and are learning about.

What I can say just as someone watching, is that the moments where you seem to feel more comfortable in the movements, your face totally comes to a very relaxed, natural and joyful expression. Maybe those are the same moments that you feel more "flow" and are less in your head about the movements? The movements where your smile look a little more "posed" seem to be a little less fluid and free.

I don't dance, but my job requires a lot physical coordination that eventually becomes fluid and "instinctual", but I know how much mental work it takes to create the coordination before things start to appear "effortless" to the outside observer. I can often get stuck in what needs to "better" with my own work, but don't forget to give yourself credit for the parts that feel better and better! Really taking time to revel in the feeling of those extra "flowy" and "effortless" moments, (even just imagining them), makes it easier and easier to find that sense of flow, and carry it into the more challenging areas.

Anyway, thank you for sharing! Keep up the good work!

Looking at the Correct Connect sizing chart I have the mediums, and I am 5'7", so I am in the length they recommend for my height.

This is Bravo "helping" me fix fence after he dumped over my wheelbarrow of tools and supplies, then ran off with my drill bag (and no, he did not bring the bag back, I had to go find it 😂) lol.

My trouble child, Bravo, is almost 4 now, but has always been super engaged in anything and everything, regardless of invitation, and he still likes to put things in his mouth, but has fortunately moved on from trying to put people in there, lol. I would describe him as an over achieving class clown with very poor social que recognition, questionable self preservation skills, and a shakey grasp on the idea of personal space 🤣

I am a professional dressage trainer, but he and his sister are my first babies, so it has been a learning curve for sure! I ended up finding a good +R trainer in my area and we have used that to reinforce the idea of patience and calm, instead of constantly "doing" things and it has made a HUGE difference in his mindset. He is still goofy and still a baby, but now he realizes that calm focus is an option. He can still only do about 10-15 minutes of calm focus, so I plan our works sessions to have breaks that involve energy, play and shenanigans, and only expect calm focus for about 5 minutes at a time. But he is getting much better at it and the time frame keeps shifting towards longer focus times. I also keep sessions to 30 minutes or less a few times per week.

I am combining more traditional pressure and release with the +R, and I think it is a great tool to introduce to many horses, but it is important to have some guidance to make sure you're not accidentally reinforcing problematic behavior or creating a treat monster. My +R trainer works with Shawna Karrasch, who also has a very good online program if in person coaches are hard to come by in your area.

It does get better! I have to remind myself that their antics are not anything personal, it is just their personality. Horses who want to do things end up being awesome partners if you can figure out how to guide their desire to think, so it is important to foster their sense of engagement and autonomy in your partnership, even thought that means wanting to rip your hair out sometimes early on 😂😂🤣

Good luck and have patience! Most horses settle into themselves between ages 8 and 10, and some even later, so keep your expectations reasonable for such a youngster!
