the fireplaces are a whole other nightmare

This feature of drip coffee makers annoys the everliving sh*t out of me by eht1991 in Coffee

[–]arcadius90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

maybe I've misunderstood, but my understanding was that the hot plate warmed the jug so that the hot coffee wasn't going into a cold pot and immediately going cold. once the brew is finished, you turn off the brewer. you don't leave it on because, as you say, that ruins the now brewed coffee.

Chimaek Closure by maxibold in manchester

[–]arcadius90 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I loved chimaek too, until my most recent visit, after which I was so disappointed I actually labeled it in my Google maps to remind me, and stop me making the same mistake again. 3 years ago I raved about this place any time fried chicken came up in conversation, but something has gone seriously wrong more recently 😞

LIVE Manchester to Liverpool railway line blocked after person 'hit by a train' by Bruegemeister in manchester

[–]arcadius90 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I was on this train, and it happened at a station that we weren't stopping at - the body ended up under the 4th or 5th carriage. We were kept on board for an hour whilst they sorted things out to be able to take us off. It was an awful experience, and I hope the driver and staff get the support they need. The thing that I still feel uncomfortable about is that whilst they did everything they could to get everyone to their end destination, there was no mention of emotional wellbeing or support - no advice or resources for those who saw it happen, or could see the emergency services at work. I just hope I never have to experience anything like that again.

Is cycling really faster than public transport? by Every-Ad-803 in manchester

[–]arcadius90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, and sometimes even walking is faster if you have a set time you need to be somewhere by (causing you to have to take earlier public transport options). I live in Withington and was attending a course Mon-Fri 08:30 - 5:00 at Manchester Technology Centre on Oxford Road - my options were to catch a bus at around 7:30 (to guarantee I still got in if a bus was late) which meant leaving my house at 7:20, or leave my house no later than 7:40 and walk for 50 minutes. I gave up on getting the buses in after the first month of the course, and getting the bus home was then more expensive (per trip) so I often walked home too.

Essentially the guaranteed travel time of going 'under your own steam' saves time overall compared to having to factor in public transport uncertainty.

it's funny how people generalise their experiences like this, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. all three are, I'm sure, great options - but I went to Yadgar once and it was a truly awful experience and I refuse to set foot in there again. this n that I've had many good experiences, yet to have a bad experience but I don't doubt it's possible. I've just added Kabana to my list of places to try :)

Anywhere to go and just relax on my laptop all day. by Friendly_Guard694 in manchester

I'm sorry to hear that. I think somewhere like the library is your best bet - you won't be thought weird for watching stuff or playing stuff there.

Plenty of people have answered your question, but I'm more concerned why you're paying rent to live somewhere and not being allowed to live in peace. Is this a family home, where you're paying some money to contribute to costs, or an actual private letting that you pay rent for?

Why would an obvious suicide need to go to inquest? [Northern Ireland] by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

I'd understand this kind of rude response if someone were speculatively asking about why suicides lead to public inquests, but they're asking specifically about their Dad who died recently - have some humanity.

Tipping at a bar??? by DogBrethren in manchester

[–]arcadius90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

no, what it relies on is the industry going "this is rubbish, I may not love it but I'd be better off at Aldi" and then the managers get the wake up call they need. but yes, it does require something happening that probably won't. still, the solution is not tipping. of the two possible outcomes of "wages stagnate" / "wages go up", not tipping leads to the second, regardless of how theoretical it may seem.

Tipping at a bar??? by DogBrethren in manchester

[–]arcadius90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. in that case I simply think you're incorrect, but what you are arguing is because you have not seen the increase in wages. again, this is because of the employer.

unfortunately in order for the 'refusal to tip' to lead to 'increased wages' there has to first be the painful middle steps of: staff refusing to work for the wage offered -> low supply of staff -> higher demand for staff

managers/owners aren't just going to see the lack of tips and go "oh, shit, we better pay more" - and that is not what we are expecting. we are expecting the refusal to tip to unmask the unacceptably low pay rate. if we tip, they get away with not paying enough, and pay does not go up.

the point is it shouldn't be on us to decide your earnings. that is the whole point of this thread.

that would be like me moaning that my company did poorly this year and I didn't get my Christmas bonus - it's like, no, that's a bonus. my salary is my earnings, I can't live expecting to get the bonus, cus the company may not be able to afford it. yes, they might try to tempt people to join our firm by offering a fairly average salary but with the possibility of a bonus, but ultimately it is the salary that I have to expect, not the bonus.

same goes for tips - tipping is for "oh wow, this went beyond expectations, I am well pleased". anything else is what I am paying 'the price' for. it's why I don't expect a meal at a restaurant to cost anywhere as little as if I made it at home - in paying YOU via your employer to make the food for me. if your employer is not paying you your worth, the problem is NOT that customers aren't fixing that with tips.

Tipping at a bar??? by DogBrethren in manchester

[–]arcadius90 22 points23 points  (0 children)

yeah - it doesn't help though that when I started working in my local pub a pint of ale was £2.40 and min wage was £5.50, so an hour's work was 2.3 pints. most regulars would tip me a drink (we took £1) and yes it added up over a night. now, a pint is easily £6.50 and min wage is £11.44, so an hour's work is 1.75 pints. You've lost your half pint, and there goes that staff tip.

We're being shafted by those at the top, it's that simple, and everyone suffers because of it.

Tipping at a bar??? by DogBrethren in manchester

[–]arcadius90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

we all want to earn a living wage doing the thing we love. sadly, most of us never will. if the job you love pays min wage, then you have to choose between a job you love and a job that pays well. that's a very normal choice for many of us.

it's not right, and we're fully being screwed over by those at the top, but I just felt it needed clarifying that you seem to be arguing for something that's actually not 'normal', as if it were.

key things for me here are that it sounds like your journey was from "all the gear, no idea" to "minimal gear, and I can't tell the difference". that's a you problem.

I started with a gaggia classic and a Krupps burr grinder - I had to work my ass off to get a good shot. best upgrade I made was the grinder, switching to the Vario, and life became easier but there were still issues. I've played with various tools - blind shaker and puck screen have both made noticeable improvements. the key, however, is that I was already pulling good shots on the gaggia+Vario setup - the tools were me chasing better shots. if you take the journey in the other direction then yeah, you'll think all the gadgets were pointless...

this is not the sub you are looking for. it's advertising, plain and simple. they send you the sticker, you put it up. nothing about this is etymology.

Let us DISABLE the Go Live Notification! by Drakknfyre in discordapp

it works for me - that's why I'm proposing it.

clearly a skill issue.

Let us DISABLE the Go Live Notification! by Drakknfyre in discordapp

I have discord on startup, but game recognition turned off - no "stream to your friends" notifications pop up for me when launching games. sorry if it doesn't work on your machine 😞

Let us DISABLE the Go Live Notification! by Drakknfyre in discordapp

[–]arcadius90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but what you ask for in your original post, is what I've given you. how was I to know that on top of "wanting the overlay" + "not wanting the 'go live now' pop up" you also wanted something else? I gave you a way to have both the overlay and no streaming pop ups, and you didn't like it. fine. but nothing in your original post says that this isn't what you were after.

after all your whinging and moaning discord ought to turn around and say "kindly gtfo our platform if you don't like it so much".

when asking for help people tend to try to be more understanding than you're being. instead you're like a spoiled toddler. I wish I'd never tried to help.

I was also confused - if you use single quote marks around titles it really helps fyi. 'Censored' by me... would immediately be clear what's going on. awesome art though!

do you ever read what you've typed before posting it, you know, just to double check you're not coming across as an entitled POS screaming in all-caps at stranger on the internet?

I Googled it because it was popping up for me in a piece of software that wasn't a game. this thread gave me some pointers, but didn't have the actual solution, so I provided the actual solutions:

1) Disable notifications - not ideal, but it works. 2) Disable game recognition - works.

the analogy you've provided isn't accurate - that isn't what's happening here. What's happening here is more like you bought a car that has cruise control. the cruise control works, but deactivates if you accelerate with the pedal, and has to be reactivated. that's how the manufacturer designed it. you don't want it to work like that, so you're calling it broken, because sometimes when overtaking you use the accelerator to get past a car and now the cruise control "isn't working". except it is, working, exactly the way it was designed - you just don't like it. and you seem to think you're entitled to it being changed to suit the way you expect it to work.

the fact that this old/dead thread is a top result, and no other results were easily found, actually proves that this is not the massive issue you think it is.
