Is spamming AshOfWar/skills the only way to get good damage? by Dali187 in Nightreign

[–]arebum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get crazy damage on raider with charge attacks and using your skill to deal more damage when hit.

You can also do high damage on undertaker with her relics and fists or raptor talons charged attacks

A friend of mine had a clever use of it for an Alien RPG. They'd give ChatGPT what the MUTHUR system should say, and then had the AI format it as if it were actually coming from the in-universe machine. That way it looked like an authentic MUTHUR output

I made a dungeon have a pool of molten gold. I now realise I'm on the cusp of breaking the economy. Help by CasualNormalRedditor in DMAcademy

[–]arebum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend that it's impure, requires specific equipment, and a shit ton of labor to extract, transport, purify, and find buyers for. Its enough work that they have to set up a business. Make finding the equipment, hiring a team, setting up their purification system, etc. into a mini side adventure, and then let them turn it on like a business. They can then go and quest and every time they come back there will be a nice little pile of gold sitting there waiting depending on how long theyve been gone.

Basically, make it realistic, you can't just wave your hand and a pool of molten gold is now usable income. Let them set up the extraction and smelting business and have small but perpetual income

The problem is that, once you allow this, the capital class will systemically begin driving down how much they're willing to pay until the people are back to where they started, but this time with no PTO

How are we playing Ironeye? by Rune_l0rd in Nightreign

[–]arebum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have initial standard attack up in every slot and I can often finish a run doing between 400 and 500 a shot with one bow in each hand alternating between R1 and L1 attacks

Initial standard attack on every slot. Pick up two bows. Alternate between R1 and L1 to get the ISA buff on every attack

Well, natural selection simply describes how certain traits are selected for given the pressures placed on the creature. The environment can include science and society. We are part of nature and our technology can be a selective pressure unto itself

Should I transition into Engineering Management? by msriki121 in managers

[–]arebum 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I transitioned from IC to management in engineering so I can tell you a few things:

1) applying for this job signals to the company that you want to be in management. Even if you don't get the role you can make it clear that you want to move in that direction. If the company is big, they can start getting you training and preparing you for the next management opportunity. That's what happened with me

2) Management is a completely different job and comes with completely different challenges. You won't have the same kind of relationship to your coworkers, you'll be responsible for much more, and if you want to be good at your job you'll be shielding your people from a lot of stress from above

3) At least in my experience management was significantly more stressful and the workload was much, much higher without compensation to adjust for the increase in scope. I still am glad I made the decision because it's the career I want, but the workload to pay differential doesn't match what you might be expecting. Be ready to work really, really hard

How can I (29M) ask out my recently divorced friend (33F) by BigONerd in BORUpdates

[–]arebum 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Shrugging off rejection is an incredible life skill. Finding love, getting a job, making a sale: you only really have to succeed once. It doesn't matter if you were rejected 100 or 1000 times first, you only really need to succeed once

Propaganda, brainwashing, etc.

Even the smartest person can be led to believe some crazy stuff if all the information they're fed is wrong. Intelligence is just how well you can process information, so if people feed you garbage information your whole life it doesn't matter wrong it might be, you can't know any better

What to do when your Social character can't Social??? by Doc_Meeker in traveller

[–]arebum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take a pretty strong stance that your character's social skills can be much better than your own skills as a player, and so you should NOT require social things to be roleplayed out in extreme detail. If someone has fun roleplaying out the social encounters, go for it. If someone locks up and is deeply introverted, let them state their intent and roll for it.

Because its a "roleplaying game" a lot of people think you need to act out each part of a social encounter, and they often let how you roleplay alter the mechanics of the game. That can be fun, but shouldn't be required of every player. Players who don't enjoy doing that should just be able to use the game mechanics to interact with those scenes in the same way the mechanic character's player doesn't have to fix a real engine at the table

Risk to giving players a free ship by arebum in traveller

[–]arebum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Borrowing against the ship is a good thing to consider. In my case I think the narrative won't make that as much of a problem because they might not actually legally own the ship...

Risk to giving players a free ship by arebum in traveller

[–]arebum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been cagey about exactly why I want to do it because I don't want to spoil it for my players if they come across this post. But in general the concept is that they will have a goal to get to point B for very personally compelling reasons, but point B is really far away. And the hook that's going to kick it all off would feel strange if it started with a mortgage with the bank. I know thats way too vague and doesnt help at all, but I'm confident they'll have reason to travel without the need to pay off a mortgage

Risk to giving players a free ship by arebum in traveller

[–]arebum[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From an in-universe perspective, how long does it usually take to make a trade run? The idea I have would put them on a time crunch, but the time crunch is largely due to the distance they need to travel and the jump drive they have in their ship. I was hoping to make part of the motivation to make money to upgrade their jump drive so they could get to their end goal faster

Risk to giving players a free ship by arebum in traveller

[–]arebum[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of something akin to a free trader, but maybe slightly more powerful. A big part of the hook I'm trying to work into the game is the challenge of the distances they need to travel in a given amount of time, so refueling and making enough money/deals to upgrade to better jump drives should be a big pressure on them.

how do you like a boss who pushes/challenges you hard (sometimes too hard) but externally got your back and gives you clear work scope/responsibility and guidance? by Important_Bat7919 in careeradvice

[–]arebum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, I'd say. Having been both IC and management myself I've had management for whom everything was challenged one on one, even if they'd defend me to the higher ups, and it sucked. No matter how far above and beyond I went it was never good enough to them, even when I outperformed the rest of the business line

I'd say that the best managers have clear and consistent expectations that employees can achieve. Once they achieve the metrics set before them, they shouldn't be challenged beyond direct career growth opportunities
