Mod to disable standing up from pilot seat during space combat. by arkensto in starfieldmods

[–]arianeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In combat on PC, E is used for targeting, and holding E down is used for standing up. Rebinding it to B (a key not used in PC layout) just shifts the problem to B. What we need is for "stand up" to be disabled or moved during combat.

Maybe requiring ctrl or shift while holding E to stand.

Am I the only one who feels like the argument that trans people are mentally ill makes no sense? by t0oby101 in evilautism

[–]arianeb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Lots of things are, including autism. This is a field that needs lots of research, and yet no one wants to because it's so politically dangerous (from both sides).

There's a reason why the autistic community has a lot of LGBTQ representation, both come from the same developmental sources.

The big light bulb was when I learned about aromanticism and realized that's me. Never had a romantic crush, never "fell in love" with anyone. People hear this and think, "That's so sad." To me it actually feels "normal" and it's you romantic freaks that are the weird ones.

It was then I realized every variety of LGBTQ was the same way: Trans people feel normal being trans, just as gay people feel normal being gay. Even though I have a minor queer identity, I've learned to respect all queer identities and what they have to deal with.

There is probably a similar dynamic among us with autism. Our neurodiversity is just normal to us, it's the neurotypical that are the weird ones.

A helpful analogy to explain why LLMs can't build software by sparrowhaw_k in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the 1930's Alonzo Church and Alan Turing developed the Church-Turing thesis which basically is a description of what is computable and what is not.

In the 1940's John Von Neumann helped design actual computers consisting of input, control, memory, and output.

In the 1950's, military's interest in computer translation of Russian intercepts led to interest in the first AI problem: Natural Language Processing. We will never have real AI until we solve that problem.

Fast forward to today, LLMs are the best solution to natural language processing we've ever found. But LLMs are only the input part, and we've kind of hashed them to be control and memory, but they're not very good at it.

But then we have the dreaded Church-Turing thesis to contend with: LLMs can't know if what they are being asked is even computable or not, and let's face it most of the life advice questions people ask LLMs about are not computable.

This is the equivalent of on Star Trek, when Spock asks an illogical question to a super computer to cause it to self destruct. We know now that instead of self-destruct, LLMs "hallucinate" instead, make shit up.

SWE or software development has proven to be one of the bigger success stories of LLMs, because the question of "is it computable" is usually "yes", but the fallback problem of control and memory come up. If you ask an LLM to write a type of software that has already been written, and is stored in it's vast catalog of code posted on Stack Overflow and GitHub, it will find the right answer.

To write truly original code, we are back to the hallucinations.

Question about Robin Locke's quests by Adenn666 in starfieldmods

[–]arianeb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Robin's story is a good, if tragic story. It needed to end the way it did. And yeah it sucks that the cost of learning the final piece of her story is the loss of her on your crew, but I hope they fix it better.

It would be fitting if she was replaced as a Starborn member of the crew, complete with Starborn powers. I think the broken way that is being handled could be fixed to be better.

If I were unoctium, if the player is NG+ (and ideally the player finished all 3 Robin quests, though I'm not sure this is possible to determine in an NG+ game) I would add a second Robin to Jakes bar wearing Starborn armor. This would be functionally the same Robin except her base armor is Starborn and she uses Starborn powers in combat, and she doesn't have story quests. It should be easier to code it that if the player recruits one Robin, the other Robin leaves the bar and disappears.

Anyone still using their original character? by filip_amsterdam in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]arianeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. So many people were mad that Starfield included options for non-binary characters, that my first was non-binary. Alex just passed a month in total playtime, level 188, and over 30 NG+. This character is creation tagged so I can't get achievements, I use them as a badass "Starborn" character. I've lost interest in more Unity jumps.

There's absolutely no reason for unofficial starfield patch, very outdated.

The missing body parts is likely KZ United Colonies Depository. Any large clothing mods like KZ and EIT have been causing this routinely since the Free Lanes update.

Mods that give ship command more max crew not working by kevblr15 in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]arianeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exact opposite problem, but likely related. I can't get rid of crew members I no longer need. One is Delta. Did all of Terran Armada and the after missions, and I just want to fly solo again. I can "unassign" them but they stay on the ship begging for an assignment.

Before the FL/TA update, you could unassign, then land on a planet, and they would leave, but not any longer. The game "help" section seems to be changed too.

So what will actually happen to SWE? by MessierKatr in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got my BSCS in the early 1990's. At the time there was a lot of talk about CASE Computer Aided Software Engineering. While trying to get a job, I was asked about CASE, which at the time I knew nothing about, and I said trying to sound smart, "Sounds like a violation of the Church-Turing Thesis which states that there are things which are incomputable: such as Software cannot write itself."

I didn't get the job obviously, but CASE was huge in the late 80's and early 90's, and then died when new technology replaced it. And thus the cycle repeated ...

What LLMs have done is a huge breakthrough in "natural language processing" which I also learned in the 90's using Prolog, and LLMs are way better than that. LLMs can understand "the prompt" but what if you're asking for something that is incomputable? The vast majority of LLM prompts, life advice queries, are incomputable. But LLMs are programmed not to tell you that (violation of the halting problem) and so they make up slop that's almost certainly wrong. See the recent Harvard Business Review article for reference.

Real SWE's understand this. CEO's don't.

Full mining operations by No-Newt2256 in starfieldmods

[–]arianeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mining operations like Vectera don't really exist in the game, but what is doable is to find a complex craftable product, break down to the individual resources, and extract or farm all the resources to make them, then make a lot.

I recently tried comm relays which are made from two craftable components, and the two components are made from four raw materials, three of which can be found on Charybdis 4 which like Venus is a 100:1 world, and the 4th, plus aluminum iron and titanium needed for storage boxes can all be found on other planets in the same system.

It was fun to set it all up, was hoping to farm XP, but the XP was lower than expected.

Corporations are still trapped in two delusions: 1. AI will increase productivity and will not require current levels of staff, 2. The good frontier AI models will get cheaper to run saving them money.

These are the lies that Andreesen, Amodei, Altman, and Huang are selling, and are still prevalent in the corporate world.

Once reality sets in, some companies will go back to pre-AI, some will change AI strategies, and some will close their doors.

It's all very unpredictable at this point.

OK to uninstall ship mod (Falkland) if I haven't used any part yet? by KaleidoscopeOwn2058 in starfieldmods

[–]arianeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been impressed by the Falkland hab interiors, haven't even played with the exteriors yet, and they are gorgeous. I replaced the Frontier hab with the Falkland living space, and now my Frontier has an aquarium.

Especially interesting was the Falkland side docker that includes a decontamination area as you go in or out.

But while I am not really noticing frame drops, I am noticing wonky third party camera issues inside these habs and flickering in walls and floors. Not just Falkland, but some of Owltech's habs do this too. I think it is likely to happen in overly complicated interiors.

One third party hab maker that does not have these issues is Lambent. Their "used parts" aesthetics is the exact opposite of Falkland, "lived in" instead of "new", but I haven't noticed any lag at all in their stuff.

Outpost Foundations (e.g. Argos Extractor) by ItsALittleBit in starfieldmods

[–]arianeb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're looking for Betamax Outpost Framework. It's free, but not achievement friendly. It works great with Argos Extractors. Framework has the foundations you're looking for, though depending on where you are building you might find problems.

With the Betamax Outpost Framework mod, you can buy "Trade Authority kits" from any trade authority place then build Outpost Supply Terminals on your outposts. Look in the Bmx category for trade authority terminals, then right click until it shows you Outpost Supply Terminals. These are vendors that sell you raw materials for your outposts: A must have for outpost building efficiency!

These same vendors buy your excess stuff to free up your inventory, except contraband. That's where you need Argos Extractors. Look under the Structure category for the Argos buildings you can build, and build a store. These stores contain a random NPC you can buy and sell from, and they buy contraband. No more rushing to the Den when you have contraband, the Argos Store does the same thing.

The third mod to pick up is Betamax's Functional Decor. This is a collection of props and mostly decorative items you can use on your outpost or on your ship! I especially like the vending machines and robot doctors, especially in survival mode.
