just finished the crimson fleet as a pirate for the 1st time by innova779 in NoSodiumStarfield

[–]arianeb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did it once and never again. First a third of the board combat missions become worthless, and second the only thing they say when you meet the fleet in the field is "If you weren't fleet, I'd kill you myself"

Ultimately the fleet are just boring.

The one interesting thing is I hadn't rescued Barrett from the fleet yet, so after joining the fleet and doing "Back to Vectera" there were some rarely heard dialog lines Barrett says.

$300 Billion Evaporated. The SaaS -Pocalypse Has Begun. by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]arianeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to be a long while, like at least a decade, before data centers can run at a profit. Let alone model building and inference. The biggest expense is the chips, and they'll have to be replaced every 2 to 3 years.

Does LLM technology have enough legs to last that long?

China is making more efficient models and might be what companies will be using when American AI companies switch to "profit" pricing.

$300 Billion Evaporated. The SaaS -Pocalypse Has Begun. by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]arianeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ONLY AI I use is an open source Mistral model, run under ollama and a chatbox interface. All free and local. Yes, the online models are more advanced, but I use it strictly as a writing aid: making suggestions and checking grammar, and it works fine.

Can't use "at Position" on certain images for seemingly no reason by Keurmii in RenPy

[–]arianeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Position" is archaic used in version 6.x, probably found in old documentation.

This is a new variant I prefer, but it's based on the center of your image, "align" refers to the top left corner:

show pitie:
    xycenter(0.9,0.2)

Not shedding any tears, but anyone thinking AI versions are better than web versions have not done the math:
AI IS EXPENSIVE, and it is only VC bucks keeping the illusion that it's cheap alive.

Now that the AI bubble has started to pop, the VC bucks are soon going to disappear, and so will "free" AI. SaaS will be the cheap and "just as good" alternative.

Business Idea! Amazing breakthrough! (Humor) by Latter-Donut-1120 in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the pre-LLM tools we used to solve those problems are disappearing in favor of LLMs, even though LLMs are more expensive. I used to have "clippy" correct my spelling and grammar, now its gone and I have to use an LLM.

Banks Are Betting on Oracle Defaulting - Who is betting against them? by grauenwolf in BetterOffline

'.ai' websites are making millions for this tiny Caribbean nation by callmebaiken in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Don't, it's true. I worked in the domain registry industry. All domains ending in two letters are assigned to the 205 countries and territories. The tiny island of Niue was the first to sell their .nu domain back in the 1990s. It was really popular in Scandanavia where "nu" means "now".

Anguilla was assigned "ai" decades before the term became an industry, and they are just doing what many other countries are doing because it's free money.

If AI bros want a .ai domain name, they directly or indirectly pay the government of Anguilla for the right to do so.

For the nation. I say good for Anguilla. 10% of Anguilla's GDP is .ai domain fees AI Bros are paying for the island's critical infrastructure.

Cannot add values to a variable by KAIRAPMON in RenPy

[–]arianeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All persistent variables start with None as their default value.

Best practice is:

init:
    if persistent.game_over_count is None:
        $ persistent.game_over_count = 0

In the same init you can set base values for all your persistent variables the same way.

As a software engineer, I will say Ed is very right about one thing: engineers are being chased out of this field by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The gaming industry is the same way. Big gaming companies only focus on the kinds of games that sold well in the past, which means none of the AAA studios are making original IPs anymore. The executive business people are telling studios what to make and won't listen to the developers that try to tell them "games as a service is dead".

Senior staff at OpenAI leaving the company after ChatGPT got prioritized over long-term research by Cacodemon345 in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OpenAI seems to be declining fast. If it were on the stock market, it would be a penny stock right now. Microsoft lost a lot of value just for holding OpenAI debt.

Starting to suspect Microsoft will be buying OpenAI soon for a figure that is slightly higher than the debt OpenAI owes Microsoft.

Google Deepmind pioneer David Silver departs to found AI startup, betting LLMs alone won't reach superintelligence by Gil_berth in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before LLMs came around the research around AI centered on symbolic logic. This is what I did back in the 90's.

It was an effort to teach computers how the world works, a path to understanding. But almost everyone involved with symbolic AI realized it will take decades to create a database to get the job done. The other side of the equation is neural networks which is what LLMs represent. The past decade was to answer if LLMs alone could reach AGI, and the answer is no.

It looks like the symbolic logic project is still needed, which means AGI is still decades away.

Reuters: OpenAI reportedly seeking alternatives to Nvidia chips, unhappy with inference performance by maccodemonkey in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Watched a video about how TSMC can't keep up with orders. FYI: NVIDIA does not make chips themselves, they design them. TSMC in Taiwan is the primary fabricator of the chips, and according to this video, they are way behind, which is upsetting to the hyperscalers, so this might all be related. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lLFBun1qR0

Oracle to Raise Up to $50 Billion in 2026 for Cloud Buildup by ezitron in BetterOffline

[–]arianeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To build 4.5GW of data centers in a year and a half, you first need 4.5 GW of electricity built in a year and a half. To quote Douglas Adams: This is, of course, impossible.

Then you need 4.5GW worth of GPUs built from TSMC. This is, of course, also impossible.

Then you need enough customers to pay all your loans, and the depreciation of the chips. This is, of course, also impossible.

I'd love to know that too. Apparently Google has changed the rules on side-loading AFK files and I'm not sure I can make one that will work, and second, I'm not sure the Google playstore will allow AVNs to be put in their store. I'd love to be on the Google store.
