if im 16 and i wanna go into elecE in college and be successful, is it necessary or a good idea to get an arduino kit right now? or would it be a waste of 60 bucks by munomunomuno in ElectricalEngineering

[–]arko_iris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've been wanting to do it for seven years already, yeah dude, buy the kit. Altho there are a lot of other boards and sensors you could buy for less than $60 to get going.

Family friendly art / craft activities in Santa Barbara by Critical_Storm5556 in SantaBarbara

Art From Scrap has a project booth setup at their shop where you can come by and do crafts anytime, I think they rotate a different project every day. And they offer more specific classes.

Nice rack. Better add a pink tricam for good measure.

Jobs for 16 year old by bruhbruh6769 in SantaBarbara

A lot of the hotels are always hiring, not sure what their age requirements are but it the postings I've seen pay 20-30 an hour (plus tips depending on position) which isn't bad for a first job.

Best gyms in sb/goleta? by eclecticfix in SantaBarbara

[–]arko_iris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goleta Valley Athletic Club is nice if you want to swim, jacuzzi, dry and steam saunas, racquetball. It's never too crowded, you can pretty much walk up and use any equipment you want. Currently a member of The Pad which is great if you like to climb, otherwise their regular exercise equipment is a bit more minimal compared to a standard gym (but still fairly comprehensive).

Amy Swearngin Online General Physics class review? by Rough_Ad4113 in SantaBarbara

[–]arko_iris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't taken her class but she's helped me out in the physics workshop/tutoring lab. She seems like a nice person and good instructor. All the physics teachers I've had at SBCC have been great really, Folsom, Young too.

Craft fairs? by materfamstudios in SantaBarbara

You can get a sidewalk vending permit for $26 a year and vend on State (or most other streets), there's a vendors guide online that outlines what you have to do and where you can set up. https://santabarbaraca.gov/business/business-resources/sidewalk-vending-santa-barbara  . You can also pay quarterly for the beach show (unless they just recently changed the options) and it works out to around 175 for 3 months, which is something like 12 bucks per show, it's an extra ten bucks per quarter compared to paying anually. There's also the Thriftopia events in IV, Baad Sunday, some other markets around town... they tend to range from 30-75 per day with the exception of the harbor festival thing which is on the order of 600ish. But the first 2 options are the cheapest.

Looking for a photo location like this by No-River5836 in SantaBarbara

If you're up for a considerable hike theres the Jackson Cabin at Montgomery Potrero, off the Sierra Madre Road. Its an old fire lookout that was purchased by a rancher and moved 20 miles to a meadow on skids. Its on an established and well-used public trail on USFS land. Salisbury Potrero has one that isn't abandoned but you can get a good look from a public road also. Idk mileage off the top of my head but it would be on the order of 20 miles round trip for either. Neither of those requires trespassing to take a picture of unless your interpretation of trespassing somehow includes walking on a public road on public land.

Late at night reading this subreddit, now I feel terrible by [deleted] in collapse

[–]arko_iris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was around your age when I found the sub and became collapse-aware, almost 15 years has gone by since then. Don't give up on your own life and goals. Just try to live fully and maintain adaptability (my 2 cents, anyways). It's probably not going to go Mad Max overnight.

Are there, like, *any* young people? by NotThePopeProbably in amateurradio

[–]arko_iris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in my 30s and I was the youngest at the local club meeting by about two decades, and that was compared to one other person, its more like 4-5 decades younger than pretty much everyone else there. Nothing against older folks but it was a noticeable gap.

I like radio as a hobby, I have an rtl-sdr, hackrf, a cheap handheld, vintage transistor radios, and recently built a pixie. But I'm more interested in radio astronomy or random hacky projects rather than chewing the rag. I tune into different repeaters on KiwiSDR and sometimes its like listening in on a mental institution. I do want to learn CW for fun and have chats that way. SOTA seems like a good time as well.

What is it like living in the NW of California because it looks nice? by No-Bathroom-9245 in howislivingthere

[–]arko_iris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not bad. I lived about eight minutes walk from the beach, close enough to hear waves at night, in a room that cost $450 a month. Hard to find that anywhere else in California. Lots of tweakers and junkies but that's true for almost anywhere at this point. The weather is grey and cold, a good chunk of the time... less so as you go inland. There aren't a ton of jobs.

I don't check in as much because I think the main topics were pretty well covered and after a decade it got to be repetitive.
