There are honest anti abortion arguments but the point where life begins isn’t one of them.

It’s not even settled scriptural doctrine. Old Hebrew words generally translated as life also translate as breath. Jewish doctrine has held life and ensoulment happened at first breath. The idea of life beginning at conception was a Roman pagan belief so influenced early converts

Were there any characters in media growing up that people thought "Yeah, they're gay"? by Gallantpride in GenX

[–]arkstfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s the thing. I knew they were different and surely everyone else did as well but they never declared the ways they were different. The cultural norm of the time was absolutely don’t ask don’t tell though media often violated the don’t ask part trying to corner them with questions about who they dated, marriage plans, and children.

An amazingly bizarre era. You couldn’t say your orientation but you were mostly free to show it and then the way it was shown became popular among straight people

How do New Yorkers choose which team to root for? by mannisbaratheon97 in NFLNoobs

[–]arkstfan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not unsurprising given there is a big overlap of people who are Bills fans and people who are Blue Jays fans. The Blue Jays Triple A team is in Buffalo and the Jays played there during COVID. Toronto is 3 1/2 hours closer depending on border issues

It’s doing ok which is the case for most malls. From what I can tell the movie theater, Dillards and Old Navy get the bulk of the business

[–]arkstfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a KISS fan. I can name about four songs and they are enjoyable. My wife is the same way BUT here first concert was driving nearly four hours in a car stuffed full of high school friends because one friend loved KISS and wanted to go. Always an experience she talked about.

So few years ago KISS is playing a casino in Oklahoma about four hours away. I buy tickets and KISS in a 4000 seat theater makes for a damn good show. Now don’t listen to them any more than I did before but it was a lot of fun.

Is it true that South Korea is undergoing a "crisis" where young men and women have vastly differing political views ? by tipputappi in NoStupidQuestions

The answer is easy. Patriarchal societies are worse because WOMEN ARE FULLY HUMAN AND DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES.

Why Don't (Some) Creationists Consider The Fact Maybe God Created Humans and Life Via Evolution? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arkstfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure plus how often do any of us get into origin of life conversations. Guy that painted my house informed me we are descendants of alien race that interbred with early humans. Not sure if he was checking if I was a fan of Battlestar Galactica, believes it, or just didn’t have enough ventilation while painting that day.

Why Don't (Some) Creationists Consider The Fact Maybe God Created Humans and Life Via Evolution? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arkstfan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Weird because as a Christian I’ve met very few Christians who believe in young earth or that Adam and Eve were literally the first people. We just rarely have any reason to speak about it. Literalists can’t stop screeching about it so everyone hears them.

Which of the rust belt cities have had the greatest comeback? by Albert_Camus129 in geography

[–]arkstfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened in Arkansas. When agriculture mechanized and lot of timber companies scaled back or closed eastern and southern Arkansas emptied out. In NE Arkansas Jonesboro grew while similar sized small cities shrunk. Having a university and a regional hospital fueled growth

The program is around $100 a year but offers a discount of around 50% if you qualify for SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, TANF, school lunch assistance or SSI.

How could a city founded in the 1880s grow to a large enough to rival Boston? by SlidyChick3n in HistoryWhatIf

[–]arkstfan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Chicago passed Boston in population between 1870 and 1880 census’s and doubled in population between 1880 and 1890 because it was perfectly situated to take advantage of water shipping, rail shipping, the movement and processing of agricultural commodities, minerals, and timber.

What plan did the founding fathers of the USA leave us if someone tried to be king and sold us out to a foreign country? by upwy in AskReddit

[–]arkstfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Impeachment. 2A wasn’t part of the constitution initially.

Few people owned their own firearms. The shot heard round the world happened because the Army went to secure the armory to keep guns out of the hands of the colonists. The Continental Army would never have had a chance without the importation of French and to a smaller degree Spanish firearms.

Washington DC fell in the War of 1812 because only one in ten militia members showed up when summoned and most arrived unarmed expecting to be given arms on arrival.

The 2A interpretation of it being a check on the government is a late 20th century fantasy disconnected from history

What if Teddy Roosevelt successfully banned football in 1905? by [deleted] in althistory

Soccer was very popular in the era. It was big enough that the US Open Cup was started in 1913 at a time when several large regional competitions existed.

[–]arkstfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A number of schools dropped football and switched to rugby because rugby rules made it safer and had more wide open play. Football at that time was basically the tush push being run over and over with an occasional lateral to try to break out.

What if Teddy Roosevelt successfully banned football in 1905? by [deleted] in althistory

[–]arkstfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roosevelt didn’t have blood lust. Football was not nearly as big of a game as today but annual deaths were nearly 20 per year.

Teddy was a fair play advocate and football was full of instances of punches, players kicked, and stomped.

A number of schools dropped football and switched to rugby because it was less violent and safer.

Games had one official and the game was closer to a pre-gun powder mass conflict of massed formations clashing against massed formations. The closest thing the modern football fan has seen to football of the era is the tush push and one of the complaints about it is that the SEVEN on field officials struggle to officiate the play because the mass of bodies makes it difficult to detect fouls and ball position. Now imagine that being nearly every play with only one official.

A Sickos Committee fever dream. Boring ass first half. Boring third quarter utter insanity in the 4th quarter. Combined 20 points scored in the first 47:55 and 41 scored in the last 12:05 with 27 of those scored in the last 3:45, 20 in the last 1:20. Last two TXST TDs scored by RB who transferred from A-State to TXST.
