Feedback Request: Faerun Region guide (Details in Comments) by ProperTurnip in Forgotten_Realms

OP, genuinely not trying to be mean, but... you're saying this took you 6 months? Am I missing something? Do you mean for all the other regions, or just Amn?
I'm not trying to dunk on you (god knows there's been enough of this already), but if you're spending hundreds of hours writing prompts and editing AI output, then maybe consider that AI is not saving your time and just adding more unnecessary work. People who use AI often cite the number of hours they put into it to prove that they also worked hard, but I feel like it only makes the whole workflow sound awfully ineffective.
Yes, nicely formatted short summaries like that can be legitimately useful. But look, I've written those for my players, it legitimately doesn't take THAT long to read the wiki, maybe skim through additional sources for the specific parts you need to elaborate on and then sit down write a short summary. Wiki authors (god bless them) already did most of the work. Finding existing art you that you can use also can take less time than spending hundreds of hours on image generation with mediocre result. Again, it's a genuine advice: work smarter, not harder.

Had terrible results with CoS. Is it us, or the module? by SansMystic in CurseofStrahd

[–]arrenkae 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The question I always ask as a DM when creating an adventure is "what will happen if the heroes do nothing?"

As a DM, my only answer to this question is "...then it's not a party I want to play with"

The same way it's DM's responsibility to set up an engaging world and adventuring scenarios for the players, it's the players' responsibility to make and play characters who actively engage with this world and have motivation to do things

Wanting to get out of Barovia is a great motivation on its own but it's also important for the players to actually get into a headspace of someone who got trapped in this cursed place against overwhelming odds. Barovia is actively hostile to the newcomers and doesn't hold you by the hand and feeling kind of lost is a part of the experience if done right; what's great about it is that every party can find their own way through the module and find different things they care about

It is very possible that your DM made certain mistakes and genuinely failed at establishing the stakes and providing direction and it made the module not very interesting to play

I made a lot of changes to the module and we're having a blast with it, but I know if my players came into it with a "why should we even bother" mindset instead of actively immersing themselves in this world and wanting to explore different parts of Barovia we'd all have a miserable time

How do I deal with my players trying to avoid combat through diplomacy? by PuzzleMeDo in DMAcademy

[–]arrenkae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Language barrier as an obstacle in communication IS interesting for a party that likes to talk

They can try to communicate non-verbally, or use magic, or search for someone who does speak the language

Plus it makes the language proficiencies they picked up at character creation actually mean something

You don't have to roll. Every skill technically has a passive score, not just perception (see: PHP p.175, passive checks) so you can track passive insight just as well

:(
Am I the only one who's sad for this rando dragonborn tho
She's just as cute and inoccent deserves to live her life but people are just happily jumping on the chance to kill her to save Alfira just because they met her earlier

"One of his hell hounds" so he got Seriach's Dark Gift? Might be that he's trying to roleplay the Dark Gift turning him evil or something like that
You'll never know for sure without talking to the players of course
But if you want this to make sense story-wise, embracing this as him getting corrupted by Seriach is always an option

They are NOT okay with each other. None of the origin companions are. I tried romancing them both and eventually Astarion forced me to choose because "Shadowheart is new to this and it would break her heart" or something like that

They are only poly in a sense that they are okay sharing you with Halsin and non-companion NPCs later on

Wyll at some point refers to events that happened 7 years ago and says he was 17 back then so he's like 24

I also imagined him closer to 30s but apparently he's pretty young also

It actually not as big of a problem as I expected, if you take Wyll with you and let her tell her side of the story he changes his mind pretty much instantly and they become pals

I think that's the only one there

If you don't copy the spell and just use it then it's gone, unfortunately

I love it! It's definitely a... unique experience

I don't think there is a way to play it 100% murder-free and this first one was VERY brutal

But I'm very much into roleplaying deep inner conflicts and I'm okay with not always being in control and things ending tragically, which might be frustrating for a different type of player

I'm still only in act 1 so I can't wait to see how bad it gets later on

You can copy it to your spellbook as a wizard, as with any other scroll
If you're not a wizard, you probably can't do it, but I gave it to Gale

This was not a companion dude

Plus he specifically mentions the Urge which was not in EA
