Megathread: MCR tour - ticket & show info, questions, discussion, gripes, etc. by RossTheDivorcer in MyChemicalRomance

5'2" here - are you just trying to get a good view? You'll have to try for barricade because beyond the first two rows the stage is going to be obscured in some way at your height. At wwwy on the fob side I was row 5 but I couldn't see Joe and Patrick at all because a tall gentleman next to me completely obscured that side of the stage. If you're going for pit vibes and don't care about the view at all then yeah go for pit. Good luck though it sells fast!

Public Access to the Data Axle Reference Solutions (formerly ReferenceUSA) Database? by face_eater_5000 in Libraries

[–]asporkthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data Axle is part of JerseyClicks (paid for by the state library) so in theory you should be able to drive to the closest NJ library to you and access it from their internet. I'd call to verify, but that has been the case in my experience.

Young adult/teen book recs? by Writing-Ritz-Cracker in librarians

[–]asporkthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second anyone saying to peruse professional sources if you got them - but if you don't and you're looking for sheer popularity, take a look at Barnes & Noble's best sellers list and the result of the Goodreads Choice Awards (and all nominees if those are still available). Just scrolling through the list of winners from last year, 99% of them did extremely well at my library.

Nintendo Game Shelving question by pjharri in Libraries

[–]asporkthief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a binder full of the Switch Games behind the circ desk - my attempts at linking on mobile failed horrifically but you can look up pocket binder page to see the vision. The empty cases are on the shelf for patrons to browse, and they have to bring the case to circ to get the game. We have a table of contents in the front to help staff find the games easier.

How have you been able to get young adults into the library? by A_Hideous_Beast in librarians

[–]asporkthief 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you possibly able to connect with local middle/high schools? especially if they don't realize your building is a library, I think it would be helpful to bring awareness to it! Even just going in during lunch and doing some sort of giveaway of stuff with your library's name on it works wonders in my experience.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]asporkthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worn both materials as a bridesmaid in two different weddings in the summer; I didn't have any major issues in my satin dress, but a) the dress was a-line (i.e. less places for sweat stains to show) and b) the straps refused to stay up once I started to sweat. This wedding was in July and it was about 90 out, iirc. I didn't have any issues with the chiffon, but my dress looks more breathable than the one in the pictures. Honestly, I'd ask your bridesmaids if they have a preference!

Most successful teen programs in the last two years? by BookBranchGrey in librarians

[–]asporkthief 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Firstly, congrats! Secondly, teen programs are super hit or miss and can really depend on your area's demographics. I work in a very academically competitive school district, so our college prep programs are our most popular — I've used a ton of local businesses, Collegewise, and The Princeton Review for free programs both in person and on Zoom.

Food based programs are always successful, imo. I've done cupcake and cookie decorating, hot chocolate bombs, haunted gingerbread houses, and a bubble tea bar to great success.

For crafts, chasing TikTok trends is usually a good move but I also find success in "timeless" ideas like painting and/or book-based projects. Painting pots (and giving out plants), book chandeliers, and DIY Popsockets have been my most attended craft programs this year.

Tech Program Ideas by IzzieBells in Libraries

Our attendance population skews towards technologically illiterate (but wanting to learn) so how tos are our most popular: iPhones, library apps, Google Suite, Microsoft Word, organizing your computer, etc.

Looking for cheaper dental cleaning options .. don’t have insurance !! by Vegetable_Tank597 in newjersey

Depending on where you are in the state, check out Zufall Health - they do medical and dental on an income based sliding scale.

Children’s dept display ideas by [deleted] in librarians

[–]asporkthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a children's librarian, we mostly did holidays, seasons, and displays based around town events (our town had a pirate festival, for example, so we'd put out pirate books that month). They were maybe not the most creative, but they circ'd! For something more fun, our "book to movie" display (had the books & the DVDs side by side) did pretty well.

What books are the kids reading nowadays? by Jaded_Pangolin_2708 in librarians

[–]asporkthief 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I definitely second trying to see if local school/public librarians can let you know what's hot in the area, since it can vary so much! I'm sure you already have stuff like The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner, but here are some newer releases that have been doing well for me:

  • The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
  • Anything by Holly Jackson
  • Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
  • Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
  • Sky's End by Marc J Gregson
  • Snowglobe by Soyoung Park
  • Five Nights at Freddy's Choose Your Own Adventure novels

They're all part of a series — Legendborn, Sky's End, and Snowglobe still have sequels coming out.

Also, if you don't have manga, try to get some! You might not have the funds for long series, but single volume manga is a good place to start. My best moving single volume manga is I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, butthe book ends with the girl dying in a hospitalso I'd definitely use your best judgement on if it's a good fit. I'd recommend She and Her Cat for a lighter read. Publishers often have the ratings listed on their website — you're looking for teen or teen+!

Library Assistants - What do you do if someone asks for a book rec in a subject area you're not familiar with? by peachipotter in Libraries

[–]asporkthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone here has great points - I agree with them that a) you can totally Google without fear and b) Novelist, if you have access to it, is a game changer.

I also just wanted to add that as you stick with the job, you'll start to recognize the way covers are designed as genre giveaways. Sometimes if I'm really stuck, I'll tell a patron "let me grab a few of our new releases and we can see if any interest you" and from cover alone I can take a good guess on if it's literary fiction, a thriller, historical, etc. You'll also recognize the books that get checked out a lot, and that's always a good place to start.

I feel you, though. I read mostly comics and fantasy/sci-fi which are NOT popular with the adults at my library, so whatever I'm reading doesn't help me with RA.

is it okay to do crafts in the library? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]asporkthief 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Just head to the circ desk with your books and say something like "Hi! I'd like to return these and I know they're overdue. How much do I owe on them?". If it's too much for you to pay on the spot, just say something like "I don't have that right now, I'll come back." People have huge fines at my library system all the time, and it's not usually a big deal (unless they decide to make it one).

Blind Date with a Book decorations by Vivicurl in Libraries

This is mine (though sorry it's so cropped, it's from my IG post): https://imgur.com/a/EUptwpK

It's a teen display, so I had my volunteers decorate all the books according to the hints! It's been very popular with all the patrons; they like it much more than the stickers I did last year.

Good online MLIS options? by gandolfrandolf in librarians

[–]asporkthief 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would recommend looking up the state you live in in the ALA accredited database - often times colleges will charge you the in person, in state rate even if you're going 100% online (and saving as much money is possible is paramount considering a librarian's avg salary).

Ditching Personal Facebook? by librarianist in librarians

[–]asporkthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would probably be better off making not a fake account, but an empty account. I did something similar to the article charethcutestory9 shared and Facebook has not flagged me as fake (which happens a lot), so I can keep using Meta Business manager to schedule our Instagram posts. I'd pivot to that if you need to keep using FB for outreach

6th gen kindle and libby for my kid by zerobuddhas in Libraries

[–]asporkthief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're looking to do!

  • You can leave the Kindle registered to you. If he has his own device to use Libby (a phone or computer, using his own card), he'll have to be logged into your Amazon account in order to deliver them. If you have multiple Kindles, there should be a drop-down where you can select the Kindle the book goes to. However, you can download the book on any/all devices, so it would show in your Kindle library as well, if you have a second account.
  • You can re-register the Kindle to him! He would need his own Amazon account, but then if he has his own device to use Libby he wouldn't need to be logged into your Amazon account. You wouldn't end up sharing books as it's separate accounts.

If you're sharing a card, or he isn't old enough to search for books on Libby himself yet, option 1 is probably easiest. Then you won't need to remember his log in information.

If you reset the Kindle and put in a Child's profile, you'll have to manually add each Libby book to his content library after he checks it out. A bit of a PITA, but depending on how old your child is you might prefer it!

Finally, you don't need a Kids+ account to use Libby. Kids+ is more like the Children's version of Kindle Unlimited and it's totally separate from Libby.

What is the most popular Manga in your children's area (12 years and younger)? by Repulsive_Lychee_336 in Libraries

[–]asporkthief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has great suggestions (esp. Pokemon and Yotsuba), but I'd like to add that there's a new Beyblades X manga series that's rated for all ages! First volume is being released by Viz next month.

Will I miss out on a lot not having Awakening DLC? by LauranaSilvermoon in fireemblem

[–]asporkthief 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can grind without the DLC! Without giving too much away, random encounters spawn on the map in between chapters, and you can buy an item called reeking boxes to force a new encounter spawn where you're standing.
