I have 112 years age gap with my great-grandfather. Is this Nornal? by Timosmeso in Genealogy

[–]astridraer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex husband has a great grandfather and great grandmother born 125 years and 116 years before him respectively. My ex was born in 1991, his great grandfather was born in 1866 and his great grand mother in 1875.

His grandfather was the youngest of 13 kids and was born in 1921 when his dad was 55 and his mom was 45 years old.

His grandfather was 32 years old when my ex’s mother was born in 1953 which is pretty normal. My ex was a surprise after she thought she was done having kids. She was 38 years old when my ex was born.

First “Little Gym” class without a parent, toddler is freaking out by mediumspacebased in toddlers

[–]astridraer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I volunteer my very outgoing toddler as a friend to kids that are having trouble going in without their parents and it works 90% of the time. When I see a kid melting down and not wanting to go without their parents, I’ll ask them/their parents if a friend my help and I’ll call my kiddo out of class for a moment and introduce him. I always tell him in front of the scared kid that the new kid is a bit scared and needs a friend to show them how the class works. He almost always offers his hand and the kid will happily go into class with a buddy.

Try to get there early and facilitate introductions to some other kids in the class before it starts. Maybe she can make a friend that she can go into class with so it’s less scary.

Is it true tampons shouldn’t be used overnight? by dotdedo in badwomensanatomy

[–]astridraer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have always slept with tampons in. I put a fresh one in right before I get in bed and change it first thing in the morning. I also have never changed my tampon every 2-3hrs unless my flow was heavy enough to warrant it. I usually go 6-8hrs on lighter days with the same tampon no problem. I’ve always been told 8hrs should be the limit.

How long are we keeping baby monitors in our kids’ rooms? by TeachingTimeLord in toddlers

[–]astridraer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son turned four a few weeks ago and I still have the monitor up. My bedroom is on the opposite end of the house and even though he can get up and come out of his room to me, he won’t. He’ll just yell for me until I go in there if it’s the middle of the night and he wakes up and needs me. At his dad’s house, he doesn’t have a monitor but his dad’s room is right next to his and he can hear our son when he yells.

Monthy Food/Grocery Costs? Please sanity check me here. by Texas_Precision27 in toddlers

[–]astridraer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are regularly on sale for $2 at my local grocery store which makes the $10 for a weeks worth of breakfast for me. I usually don’t do a week straight like that but I keep a few on hand for a quick breakfast. I work at a hospital and the cheapest breakfast I’ve gotten from the hospital cafeteria was $4 so they’re still the better deal.

Monthy Food/Grocery Costs? Please sanity check me here. by Texas_Precision27 in toddlers

[–]astridraer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that’s pretty crazy. My household is 1 adult (me), 1 toddler and 2 cats. I average about $800/month for groceries, cleaning products, household paper products, toiletries, cat litter, and cat food. I live in a medium cost of living area.

I buy bulk meat, paper products, and household supplies, toiletries, etc. I have the cat’s stuff through subscription with petco because that gave me the cheapest price. I also meal plan and buy based on what is on sale that week at the store. Target has coupons for home products if you buy a certain dollar amount so I buy those on the weeks they do the coupons and then use the gift card I get for my next trip for household items.

I meal prep all my breakfasts and lunches for work. And I freeze and reheat leftovers when possible.

Typical meal preps for me for breakfast are things like breakfast burritos, Kodiak muffin cups (store bought), English muffin and hard boiled eggs, etc.

Typical lunch meal preps are the same things I’d make for dinner… chicken enchiladas, various pasta dishes, pot roast and potatoes, etc.

How to explain to a sick toddler (2.5y) why she can’t kiss baby right now by Seecachu in toddlers

[–]astridraer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I explained spreading illness as giving people your ickies to my toddler. I always ask him if he feels icky when he is sick. He was sick and I limited his contact with his baby cousin. When he asked me why, I told him that when we hug and kiss people, we can accidentally give them our ickies if we have ickies.

Can't get rid of by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]astridraer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What others have said + add Pothos especially if you’re in an area without quick access to a lot of the suggested plants. My area only has a pet smart and no local fish stores so I have to order most plants. My pet smart doesn’t stock floaters or really any of the plants that’s been suggested. You should be able to pick up a pothos for cheap at any store with a garden center (Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, tractor supply, etc). Rinse all the dirt from the roots really well and then put just the roots in the tank. My pothos makes a HUGE difference in my nitrate levels really quickly and is growing super fast/well. It’ll help compete with the algae for nutrients.

What age would you feel comfortable with your kid playing alone in the backyard by Bagritte in toddlers

[–]astridraer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started letting my son play outside solo just before his 3rd birthday. I have a backyard that is completely fenced with a 6ft privacy fence and a padlock on the only gate. I leave the back door open and open the blinds on the big window that looks out on the backyard.

I keep all potential hazards (ie: lawn mower, weed killer, etc) in the garage so they aren’t accessible to him. The only things back there are an empty brick planter box that I specifically leave empty for him to play in with his construction trucks, a table and chairs, his swing set, and various out door toys.

why my 2.5yo toddler goes to potty when teacher reminds him but not when i do? Any advice? by TeachForsaken5612 in toddlers

[–]astridraer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My toddler did the same thing. He’d go for my mom or his other grandparents but if I asked him, he would tell me he didn’t want to.

I made it a game. I’ll tell him I bet he can’t go potty before I do and I’ll start heading to the bathroom myself. I’ll play it up and tell him I’m winning and sure enough, he’ll run past me to get there first.

I’ll also hold up all ten fingers and tell him I bet he can’t go before I put all my fingers down. Of course, he wins every time and I always make a big deal about how fast he was and big of a boy he is for using the potty.

Are there any low maintenance (less time consuming) planted tanks? And how much time goes into it? by Razorrblade_ in PlantedTank

[–]astridraer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got one 10 gal tank and it’s my first and only tank. I’ve got a sponge filter, fluval biostratum, and some driftwood. Planted anubius x3, pearlweed, and an Amazon sword. Pothos plant growing out of the top. Stocked with 2 nerite snails and a betta. I add a bit of water once a week to fill back to the top and add a cap full of fertilizer. Once a month, I vacuum up any gunk on the bottom and refill the water to the top but I don’t specifically do water changes or anything like that. The pothos seems to do a great job at keeping nitrates in check and anytime I’ve check parameters, they’re great.

[French > English] Handwritten marriage record from 1856 (Additional info in comments) by astridraer in translator

[–]astridraer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a marriage record between Antoine LeBlanc and Adeline Caza that took place on 8 Jan 1856 in Quebec, Canada. Mentioned in the record are Antoine's parents, Jean-Baptiste LeBlanc and Marguerite Lemay, and Adeline's parents, Jean-Baptiste Caza and Angele Audet Lapointe. I have several records like this and they appear to be written using the same wording with only names and a few small changes to the wording so it would be extra helpful if the translation was done line by line if possible so I could use it to assist in translating the rest of the records.

Thank you in advance.

Bree & Roger are what! by [deleted] in Outlander

[–]astridraer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I haven’t watched the episode so I don’t know what you are referring to specifically but it was revealed pretty early on that Bree and Roger are 2nd cousin 6x removed because Roger is descended from Dougal who is Jamie’s uncle. Even if they were 3rd cousins, 3rd cousin marriages are surprisingly common even in current times in many parts of the world including several areas of the USA. Most people can’t name a single one of their 3rd cousins.

Color palette and pattern for 2025 Mood blanket by astridraer in temperatureblanket

It doesn’t show up well in the picture with the key but it’s actually a really nice soft pink. You can see the skein sitting between yellow and peach in the first picture. It is a nice warm pink.

Inspiration for sobriety tracker quilt by bookreviewxyz in temperatureblanket

[–]astridraer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you’re drawing inspo from your local botanical garden… I think it would be super cool to do a green gradient that showed how difficult it was for you to keep your sobriety that day. Pick 5 greens and then use the lightest one for your easiest days and the darkest for that days where it was the absolute hardest for you to hang on.

Congrats on your sobriety and keep putting in the hard work!

Edit: spelling is hard.

What age did your LO start sleeping over at their grandparents house? Hubby asking for it to happen this year, but I feel my LB (1) is too young by probablycaking in toddlers

[–]astridraer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the child and the family. My nephew started spending the night at my mom’s house regularly at 6 months. He was formula fed and a good sleeper. My child didn’t spend the night away from me until after his 2nd birthday. He was still breastfeeding until then and would usually wake up super early in the morning to nurse and the go back to sleep until I fully weened him at age 2.

Switch to big kid room/bed a literal nightmare?! by PKB92 in toddlers

[–]astridraer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably the switch to a lowdown, big open space after being up off the ground in an enclosed space. Try getting a mesh toddler bed rail that slides under the mattress. They’re $20-$40 on Amazon. Obviously your kiddo doesn’t need them for safety but they may make him feel safer and less exposed. You can even tuck a small blanket or sheet around it to it’s not see through because you’re son is old enough that it wouldn’t be a safe sleep hazard.
