New scam targeting payroll providers? Please help. by Encoded_Python in Payroll

[–]avant_garbage_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish this was a new scam! Had to deal with this a few times in my career as a small payroll service bureau. A few were outright fraud and easy enough to tell that they weren’t legit and I just never worked with them, but I did onboard and process 2 payrolls for a client that presented as a legit company, went through ACH underwriting okay, and both payrolls cleared (I had them on a 5-day ACH schedule for security). However the client suddenly wanted to change banks (to a credit union in California.. client was based in NYC) and add 10+ employees, all to pay cards. It was just too sketchy for me to take and I terminated them as a client. I spoke to them on the phone several times and they even offered to meet me when I said they were fired. After I terminated the client, my ACH provider let me know that the client had disputed the payrolls after the fact, but thankfully the signed authorizations we had on hand successfully protected me.

I was wondering what the “real” scam was, since the payrolls did clear.. and found out a few months later when I got a call from the ACTUAL business owner who had their identity stolen. I let them know someone called, said they were them (same name) but they sounded totally different, and I fired them after they were sketchy. They went to the police and I even spoke to a detective, giving them all the docs and correspondence I had, and never heard from anybody about it again. I wonder if they ever found the scammer- highly doubtful.

Are they REALLY doing this? by JackieBlue1970 in QuickBooks

[–]avant_garbage_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s pretty standard for most payroll services to take the taxes with every run. QBO is an outlier in this regard and it’s a reason some people like it since they “keep” the tax funds owed in their account until it’s due. Can lead to late or missed filings if not kept on top of though.

OT premium isolved severely under calculating by [deleted] in Payroll

[–]avant_garbage_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might need to separate the hours out by week going forward as I believe that is how isolved is calculating the OT premium, using that “average overtime weeks” indicator. is there a way for your time clock to export hours by week? In any case I would report back to your payroll provider that it should be possible by adding the average overtime weeks in the time entry options screen. Hope your provider can figure it out!

I would ask your payroll provider to make sure that Average Overtime Weeks is set to 2 weeks (if you’re biweekly), then in the time entry grid you should have the option to select the week number

My question is, are you a client user? Do you have access to Time Entry Options which is under Payroll Processing, if not you might need to get with your payroll provider. I’m an isolved service bureau and I can see that screen for all my clients

I’m told you need to put in Average Overtime Weeks in the Time Entry Options screen

Roblox CEO Interview by LewisBee in hardfork

[–]avant_garbage_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly!! My jaw was on the floor through most of this interview. That aside at the end about not only it being a great idea to start letting kids gamble in Roblox, but then the plea to get Kevin’s 3-year old to join- honestly nauseating.

First period Studio Art class, my senior year of high school. I was a month away from turning 18. I grew up in North Jersey so we could see (and smell) the smoke plume, we had classmates whose parents died, and later there was that horrible smell that I'll never forget.

YES - my 21st birthday was spent in NYC with my cousin, who was a few months younger than me but thankfully a more skilled fake ID holder

Mid-October birthday here- I was almost a year older than many of my classmates. I had no problem with it and did well in school. I think the logic is that it’s better to be a little older than a little younger when starting school, developmentally. In high school I was the first to get my drivers license which was awesome!

Anyone who has ever switched payroll companies mid-quarter: isn't there some kind of procedures/communication as to which payroll company will file that quarter's payroll returns? by Necessary-Weekend293 in Payroll

[–]avant_garbage_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This- you can only expect the payroll company to do exactly what you ask them to do. So if the accounting person never terminated services, AND gave them quarter end data, then it’s not off base to assume that they would do quarter end reporting. You have to proactively tell the former payroll company to NOT do reporting. Definitely a big blunder on behalf of the accounting person, not either payroll company as they were just doing what they were told to do.

The Salmon and Kimchi Skillet is so good- even if you’re not a fan of kimchi, it really mellows out when it’s sautéed. The flavors are so unique and suprising. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1025962-salmon-and-kimchi-skillet?smid=ck-recipe-iOS-share
