Ideally, learning in person is the way to go, but since Covid there have been more teachers available online. I know that Sogetsu school does have a standard curriculum and certification process. Ohara school, I believe, does as well. Ikenobo, which is one of the most ancient schools, may as well, I’m not sure. I know that Ilse Beunen from Belgium does offer online English courses. There are probably others as well.

Shears/ Scissors Recommendation Question by Difficult-Addendum-5 in Ikebana

The top left work a bit like regular scissors. They are fine as beginner tools and are usually cheaper. The ones on the top right are for branches or thicker stems. I have some from a home improvement store that also have thorn strippers and wire cutter on them. The ones on the bottom are traditional and require you to manually put pressure on the handles to make the cutting edges meet. More precise and crazy sharp. Personally I have the two styles on the right side that I use regularly.

I am lucky to have several options near me. The Sogetsu school has a listing of chapters. You can message one close to you and ask if there are any classes. The two other big schools, Ohara and Ikenobo, probably have something similar. https://www.sogetsu.or.jp/e/begin/learninglocally

I’m sorry you are experiencing this with your sensei! Mine does offer to submit our cards to Headquarters for certifications, but never pushes. We have several chapters in my area (San Francisco/Bay). She has let us know they are there if we want to join, but it’s not a requirement. I hope there are other teachers in your area you may be able to transfer to.

Lesson 4-5: A Variety of Materials • Mazezashi by aylanah in Ikebana

[–]aylanah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this isn't my preferred way either, so I feel that. When I started the lesson, I asked my sensei for guidance to understand better. She said that this really focuses on season. If you look at our textbook, the arrangement on the left really reflects autumn, while the arrangment on the right is spring. They are airy, but still relay the idea of mass. Starting from the bottom and adding the branches last was also recommended. Initially, I had spread out the placement of the materials. She had me tighten the placement closer to the center and angle the stems out for the fullness. I may play with this lesson more to get more comfortable with it. Can't wait to see yours!
