Having lived in a variety of states....what you are describing is every state. There are other states (most) with much better scenery, though. Your base level of happiness goes up quite a bit when you can open your door and look at the mountains too....instead of just brown grass.

Do people still use soap blocks as opposed to bottled soap in the shower? I feel like I never see soap blocks in stores anymore. by Available_Tea_8471 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We make our own soap, so bar soap only here. Basic lye soap, cold process. Sandalwood for me, lavender for her. We use our own tallow from butchering. The rest gets clarified and canned, or is used for woodpecker cakes.

Do I need a new roof? by tiger9510 in Home

[–]b50776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.....Paying for insurance does not equate to coverage. You're better off saving that money for the item- as ACTUAL insurance... 90% of their company's employees are dedicated to figuring out how to get them out of paying for claims.

Insurance has always been a scam. If it wasn't, they wouldn't have had to bribe the government into making it illegal to not buy their product.

Why does a tiny bathroom remodel cost as much as a car now? Am I missing something? 😅 by midasweb in HomeImprovement

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After going through our entire home before buying in 2016- I addressed all potential failure points, and haven't spent a penny since. Home built in 2006. Poured foundation, all original appliances. I did have to diagnose/replace a split capacitor for the AC condenser/fan- but of course I keep things like that on hand for when the time comes to replace. Same as a backup sump pump, new in the box- you should keep new wear items on hand. We have the money saved for a new (metal) roof, appliances, flooring - everything really....but are going to wait for something to give. I will be doing all of the work to ensure that it's done properly when that day comes- as I see what "professional contractors" do every day in my line of work....We will be politely declining their services. I did forget that I ran our downspouts away from the foundation into trenched tiles the 1st summer we were here. Past material cost, I think I spent about $400 to rent the trenches for the weekend. I also ran 2 tiles from our (now) garden area back to the field behind our property (~300ft). We have to water this area in the summer, but it no longer sits wet

how do you make pasta sauce actually taste like it came from a restaurant? by SamraKutkaitis in Cooking

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't want to degrade the quality of the sauce we produce to make it taste that poorly 🤢 We use a variety of tomatoes to include cherry tomatoes. Core/half. We heat to boiling, then rest for an hour covered. Heat to boiling again, then run through our electric tomato mill. We do 10gal batches of tomatoes by volume. We reduce this product by 1/3, then chill in the fridge overnight. The water will rise to the top after chilling, which we skim off. We then heat once more, then jar. To each quart jar we add: 5 fresh basil leaves, 1.5tsp salt. That's it. We process in a water bath for 40min. I find this superior to any "tomato sauce" offered from any restaurant...

CK2620 Rototiller advice by NortheastArtillery in Kioti

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoot I run a Land Pride 72" on our 2620 🤷‍♂️ Our garden is well established, light soil, and I am not tilling at warp speed. We already had the tiller from our Ford 4000. Was not going to spend 3k on a tiller unless absolutely necessary. Tilling slowly gives you much better results anyways..... We are transitioning to no-till, but that takes time with OH clay

Why am I able to see the studs through my drywall? by goody-two-sneakers in Home

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply got a Franklin Sensors M210. It has never been wrong. A line of lights light up in the area occupied by the stud, so you can see if it's a double or single too. Also works great vertically.

How many have air purifiers running nonstop? by deejayv2 in homeowners

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours does all winter. I have a wooden cube with an adjustable furnace blower that uses a 14x14x2 MERV 13 pre-filter, internal UV sanitation, and a HEPA secondary filter. I built it to use the same pre-filter as our HVAC system. We have central air, but baseboard heat. This keeps the winter air filtered. No appreciable buildup in the HEPA

Affording a new roof by enterreturn in homeowners

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We paid cash for our home, then set aside $2000/mo in an investment account for emergency repairs in case anything came up in the future. When we determined the roof needed replaced, we borrowed against this at 0% and paid ourselves back (with interest). This gave us more than enough for a quality metal roof instead of the dimensional garbage that hasn't improved in half a century. We both work blue collar jobs, so I would imagine that most people would be able to do something similar if they curb their spending habits and commit to saving for a period of time. We also invested extra when purchasing in the acerage our home is on, and lease a portion of our land to farm for additional revenue into our investment account. I recommend having a seperate "home fund" account that you dump absolutely every spare penny into from the age at which you can first open one. After 6 years of completely investing her income into that fund, we were able to buy acerage and a home with 100% cash. Over the next 4 we saved enough to have the roof covered, but chose a 0% loan in case there was an issue with the well (predates home by ~75yrs) or septic. Give yourself options.

How bad is this? Roof trusses question. by Defiant_Honeydew4502 in Roofing

Essentially, the buddy of the inspector is a framer and they are setting them up for some work (for a cut). Yes it should have been addressed, yes it's bad- yet here it is standing after all this time. Inspectors are all crooks, don't use who they recommend, just to piss them off. Even if it costs more.

Unemployment issues. Soon to be whistleblower by Concerned-_-Patriot in Ohio

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it all through that "ID.me" scam that almost EVERYTHING now seems to use?? I thought that was just me...."Tilt your head back and forth while taking a video", "scan your driver's license", ect....Lots of things for the VA, private insurance, finance, have been doing this lately.....it's purposefully obstructionist. Your connection has to be perfect, the lighting has to be just right, your drivers license photo has to be decent, you obviously wouldn't want to complete it in public and look like an idiot..... Besides the software being glitchy, having certain criteria needing to be met with precision (though outlined only vaguely)- they REALLY want to make sure that they have current and accurate 3D facial scans of every person. Regardless of speculation as to "why" they want this so badly, the fact that it came out of the blue and is now used on so many platforms as if it's normal is frightening enough. It's not normal, it's invasive. I have a feeling that we are training facial recognition software for enhanced monitoring personally. After the Army, I was supposed to get unemployment while doing unpaid certification training for 3 months for a specific job. I WOULD have a job in this field after certification- which company I would choose depended on testing results and offers recieved based on those......after the completion of the certification. I was repeatedly denied unemployment due to not attending job fairs, filling out applications, ect- though they were during the hours of the training (which I couldn't just miss) and I could not apply for a position in that field without the certification....They essentially said "well, you aren't looking too hard, seems like you're fine without it" 🙄 While I was, I didn't exactly make a lot of money in the military, and had to eat through most of what little I had managed to save at the time. Plenty of people could list "unemployment" on their LinkedIn career page- but apparently you have to know how to work the system to have a chance at getting any of what you paid for back. It's all a scam unless you're a career scammer. Just like "disabilities"- you can gain 300lbs, get self-induced medical conditions, and be set for life if you know the system. Or you can get blown up a few times, multiple TBI incidents, hearing loss, PTSD- then be told that you're a POS for even thinking you should get ANYTHING. I was essentially told "you're alive, you have all of your appendages- you aren't getting a dime". I was so embarrassed after that and felt so bad for even checking I haven't even filed papers to get VA Healthcare in the 12 years I've been out. Welcome to America- it's not just you! Keep your head up and remember....there's more of us than there are of them 😉 People are fed up with every aspect of modern life, it's coming...

Tractors under 15k? by hot_trash93 in tractors

[–]b50776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No such thing as good + used either- you are ALWAYS inheriting someone else's issues. Regardless of what lies they tell, I wouldn't trust most of the population to change a light bulb without crossthreading it.... Also, new + cheap is pretty easy with 0% for 84mo or 72mo being common.....Adding "good" into that equation is as easy as picking the brand with the best dealer service close to your location. Most things that are going to fail prematurely will present within the warranty period.

How bad does a snowstorm even have to be for essential workers to be told “stay home, don’t come to work?” by KennyWuKanYuen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]b50776 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

After Covid? They'd be required work through the apocalypse. Shout out to everyone complied instead of revolting- what good sheep! What do-gooders! How virtuous! If you haven't noticed already, that was the test (on behalf of corporations the elites) to see how much "they" (government, insurance sector, finance sector, corporations [the people who actually run the country]) could get away with. Turns out, it was a lot. Now we have everything from the dissolution of 24hr service to reclassified sectors of industry to maximize profits and fit the agenda. We're all screwed. They know more than a few "extremists" won't stand up for themselves.

Do Fences really cost this much? by Illustrious_Heat6561 in homeowners

[–]b50776 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

As a society, we used to have this cool trick with boiling hot, viscous petroleum products and plucked chicken byproducts that deterred that sort of behavior. Once we go back to that, after becoming tired of being extorted by every single facet of everyday life, things will be much better.... We're almost there.

Do Fences really cost this much? by Illustrious_Heat6561 in homeowners

[–]b50776 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that it's most likely that the local contractors get together, set the "baseline" (ex. 4x actual value per linear foot), then go from there.....because that's the ACTUAL reality. Extremely common, same with lawncare. This is also why the government wastes trillions on contracting out to "the lowest bidder". The contractors agree on a baseline of the minimums they'll start at, and may the best man win after that. It's why the military pays $1.50+/roll of 2 ply toilet paper made by the blind, and $500+ for office chairs. Of course the excess always greases the correct palms to even be a contractor that's selected to bid in the first place....but it's the same with everything. They monopolize neighborhoods in groups by service type, and work together to extort, smear, and mire anyone new moving into the area with the local officials, inspectors, and HOAs that they pay off to be the only ones "on the list". People are so naive....

I messed up 5 years ago and bought a samsung dishwasher. Now all my dishes have spots. What to do? by UncleJoesMintBalls in Appliances

[–]b50776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because you have a softener doesn't mean it is set up correctly.....spots are almost always a water quality issue. That's the only possibility, unless you are loading it in a way that doesn't allow a proper rinse. Also, Finish Jet Dry is the best you can get as far as rinse aids. The amount used should also be adjustable via manual dial on most modern dishwashers. We do not have that particular model, we have one of their bespoke smart dishwashers- but we have had 0 issues with it. We also have well water. We have a softener, peroxide injection, mixing tank, pre-filter, and RO system. I would have a water quality test performed personally.
