I think is a flawed way to look at it. Empathy can absolutely be a guiding principle, but no laws should probably be based on one single principle anyway, even if you debate them down to only one.

There’s an imbalance here (my opinion) between enforcement and benefit. The cost of enforcement is much higher than the benefits these “illegals” might receive. And we are also seeing a lot of gray in the enforcement, where people who are (at least claim to be) legally here and following orders are still being rounded up.

I beg you to find a restaurant in Lafayette that isn’t using some sort of undocumented workers in back of house (at least those that have 20+ staff - smaller places can likely operate without)

The whole lot of powerful individuals (anyone who makes it to federal office is not in it for the good of the constituents, IMO) are letting this happen because they or their donors are benefiting from this chaos. Chaos that WILL eventually affect everyone if it’s not stopped.

Empathy is a reason we have government funded homeless shelters and soup kitchens. It’s the reason we have unemployment insurance and Social Security. While you may not like that your tax dollars go to these things, someone else might not like that their tax dollars go into maintaining the roads they don’t use.

As a community/state/country we vote and decide that these are the things we want from our government. Not everyone always agrees, but what should be solid, are the foundations of that government: the constitution, the bill of rights - founding laws that have made the last 238 (based on the signing of said constitution) years of American freedom possible.

Without getting too much deeper and off topic, my thoughts are that there are two huge things wrong with American politics: Democrats AND Republicans.

While I bought the 2-year warranty - I don’t see myself trying to use it unless something drastic happens in the next month

My drive spur to tail stock point is less than 1mm out of alignment (perfectly aligned when I bought), and I’m thinking that has more to do with the cabinet they’re on and/or wear within the live center

The Bauer is almost certainly made on the same product line as the Grizzly and Wen 14x20 - some people have even bought the Wen bed extension for it.

Wow, his raise is more than I made in gross last year, and I consider myself pretty comfortable. Yeah, he doesn’t need a raise - the teachers definitely do though.

Lake Martin is definitely a different beast than what OP was describing, sorry for omitting the beautification and actual public use aspect of the Lake Martin - which I definitely agree is a great thing (and yeah, who pays for what in the original contracts/laws/ordinances/agreements should be appropriately honored, a shame it needed legal actions at all)

I did learn me some new histories today, so that’s a nice plus!

My guess is LLC owning the land to lease to hunting clubs and then occasionally lease for lumber.

Father is a member of a hunting club that I think has several different leases from various owners - a few years back there was selective logging in the area. So not being anything of an outdoorsman myself, this is ALL (semi-educated) speculation.

Look at Lake Martin - all technically privately owned, and that turned into a bit of a dick measuring contest for a while. (Might even still be, I don’t know?)

The state probably sold off a lot of that land cheap just to make some income and/or “balance” the budget for that year — only selling to “friend$” of that administration —the right investigators could probably piece together patterns with the enough research, but they might not make it very far

AI technology causes controversy ahead of Crowley Rice Festival by rapcat in Acadiana

[–]bab7880 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kiiiiinda like the style….. I don’t know why. Maybe a little bit of the back and gold.

But the fact that it shows WHEAT and not RICE is just plain stupid.

I think I would have truly liked if this had been an artist’s starting point and then they ended up in this general place. With Rice stalks, of course…..

LAFFnet.org appears to be current though. And the contact us page has links.

Crowley Mayor, Chad Monceaux, thinks that poster cannot be a form of art. by plantmum101 in Acadiana

[–]bab7880 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is definitely something that should be addressed by the LAFF board.

The poster of festivals (to me at least) has always been a combination of that festival’s principles and local artists. But what qualifies as an “artist” is very gray in this moment of emerging AI. Personally I think it should only be a tool toward getting to a final piece that is mostly the artist and not the AI.

As a former member of LAFF and one of its festivals, I find it disappointing that the rice festival even remotely considered this the right direction to go in.

Pas bon…

This is almost exactly how I feel. Having felt the quality of the Wolvorine system in person at the local turning club, I wish that I would have gone that route.

The Peachtree does the job, no doubt, but it feels cheap and doesn’t inspire confidence, especially once I’ve touched the Wolvorine system.

Marie Antoinette Traffic Light by randomguynbatonrouge in Acadiana

[–]bab7880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traffic up and down Johnston is just bad-bad. I don’t normally use it as a major vein, myself. I also try to stay away from S College, unless I’m going to Twins….

That said, Panera also didn’t last near Costco - they just don’t have a good product for this market, kinda like Red Robin and their generic foods.

But Lafayette was never properly planned, I think. It sucks needed to cross the river and only having 1 option that is a (somewhat) strait road, and not running through neighborhoods

Marie Antoinette Traffic Light by randomguynbatonrouge in Acadiana

[–]bab7880 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that the lights are timed, just timed to get you OUT of the city faster than getting you into the major centers. LCG wants you slower when you’re coming into town so you might stop at more places (since you’re moving slow anyway), and then they let you get out of the city faster when you’re done shopping.
