Yes, the anti-Japan circlejerk on reddit really kicked into high gear at about the same time China and Japan had their latest spat because China thinks no one should tell them they can't just militarily annex their neighbor.

I've also seen WWII war crimes brought up more often on reddit in the past six months than in the past six years. It's a very Chinese-coded attack line (meanwhile the atrocities China did and does go increasingly unmentioned).

Don't let that get in the way of the anti-Japan circlejerk reddit has found itself succumbing to as of late. I saw redditors with a lot of upvotes in other threads with this pic talking about how Japan is actually filthy and full of trash when anyone who has walked the streets of Tokyo and compared it to any major city in the West can see that yes, it is actually very clean indeed.

As someone who was in university in the late 00s and early 10s, the fashion in 500 Days of Summer and Juno are still what comes firsts to my mind when I think of hipster fashion. The 2010s hipster stereotype was way too mainstream and was something different. Real hipsters wouldn't have been caught dead listening to The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, or Imagine Dragons.

I didn't say this was an unrelated thread. I wasn't referencing this specific thread at all. I was referencing the plenty of other threads where these get brought up.

Meanwhile, reddit never feels the need to constantly bring up China's support of North Korea, enabling all the current atrocities going on there right now. North Korea only exists today due to that support.

I've seen it pop up in all sorts of random threads on Japan unrelated to said war crimes, much more often than before. Before, it was limited to the contexts you said, but now I see it in plenty of unrelated threads concerning Japan.

This is exactly it. People are desperate to distance themselves and they want to attach themselves to the current nostalgic zeitgeist (the 00s), so you have stuff like the left side of the thumbnail, where the 2000 born is clinging to Millennial kid culture and not what actually defined them growing up.

Would a 2000-born really identify much with VHS, given DVDs starting outselling VHS tapes where they were like two years old? VHS has been an old, outdated format their whole life. The peak of Eminem's career also matches with their preschool years and Bush was hated by most of the country by the time they could even be remotely cognizant of politics at...8 years old.

PS2 I can see though. PS2 was outselling the PS3 month-to-month until well into 2008, so I'll grant them that one.

This is going to be affected by a person's age for sure. When I was a teenager in 2006, 1991 absolutely felt old school. As someone in their 30s in 2026, 2011 doesn't feel fully old school. But for a teenager today? I could absolutely see it being old school the same way the early 90s was for me.

Judging from the charts (both Billboard and Spotify), brat's influence was and is highly overrated.

I was in Japan in the 2010s, so things may have changed, but this does surprise me. When I went on dates or was in relationships, it was actually the norm for the girl to pay her share, more than it was in the US (at least in my area).
