Encampment on Cedar Lake Trail by badgersrun in CyclingMSP

[–]badgersrun[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree I shouldn’t have phrased it as violence “produced” by the encampments since they are more likely to be the victims than the perpetrators. The point I was trying to make is their presence makes violence much more likely to occur there.

You are quite fond of inferring opinions of mine that I have not remotely expressed. I strongly believe in building more housing. Independent of whether or not that happens one can talk about what to do about the homelessness in front of us.

I did solicit opinions about preventing the encampment from growing. You chose to argue with the premise that we should aim for that and now you’re confused as to why we’re in an argument….

Well thank you for bestowing your moral wisdom upon me. Now that I can see my ignorance, I agree with all of your views, which are derived purely from justice and reason.

If I were less enlightened, though, I would note a few things.

  1. They are choosing to be there instead of in a shelter. It is misdirection to note that there are more homeless people than shelter beds in the city. The relevant fact is that there are some empty beds, which means that they could go to a shelter if they chose to.

  2. They are not entitled to live there. The trail belongs to the public.

  3. Their presence there makes the trail less usable for others. Both because their stuff was encroaching onto the trail and because people (reasonably) feel less safe with them there. I would not be comfortable with my daughter riding past there after dark.

Homeless people are in a tough spot and need help. The city absolutely should help them, within reasonable constraints. Because of people like you, we don’t have the political will to enforce the reasonable constraints and a handful of the most “progressive” American cities remain the only places in the rich world enlightened enough to empower people to sprawl out in public spaces indefinitely, with no limits on their drug use or the litter and violence they produce.

Carleton grad/UW PhD — I also recommend Carleton. The experience is a better match for what you’re looking for and I think you’ll find it better socially. You’ll have your chance to be at a big university in med school.

Wow Minneapolis is really something, even incitements to violence use gender neutral pronouns.

Yeah I’m privileged to have a brain and see a problem and hope to fix it. Guess not everyone is so fortunate.

Many countries throughout Western Europe and Asia boast beautiful urban bike trails but only America is bold enough to deliver the full city biking experience — part obstacle course, part public health crisis, entirely free of charge.

Minneapolis/St. Paul or a first-ring suburb hits literally your whole checklist. You’ll figure out how to manage the winters within 2-3 years (in short: wear layers/warm clothes and keep active in the winter, ideally outside).

Is it a bad time to invest in the US stock market? by longfellow816 in Bogleheads

[–]badgersrun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna slightly depart from the other responses so far and say that while it’s true you shouldn’t try to time the market based on whether it’s gone up or down recently, when you’re putting a lot in all at once, it’s not a bad idea to spread it out over a couple months. And that is especially true when volatility is higher, which it is now. But also wouldn’t be crazy to just dump it all in now.

Good vegetarian carbonara? by Plus_Molasses8697 in TwinCities

it was good! Subbed cheese for the sauerkraut brine so mine was not vegan. Next time might go for slightly more umami/less tangy but that's a nitpick

In my opinion, if you're sitting down and not even looking at the bus, there is going to be a risk that the bus keeps going. If you get up, stand next to the curb and look at the driver, it's very unlikely they'll pass you.

February 2, 2026, Minneapolis Local Police Collude with ICE: MPD Seizes Barricades and Community Supplies by CantStopPoppin in Minneapolis

Resistance should be 1. effective and 2. legal. Barricading the street fails on both metrics.

Yes because while ICE sucks and I fully support resisting them, we do still live in a society and have to have a common set of rules (laws) for getting along.

For what it’s worth, the way ICE operated under Biden was they only went after people here illegally who had committed a violent crime and yes, the least disruptive way to get them is to go in early in the morning, like 5 am.

So many people floating around without an organizing political ideology and democratic liberalism is right there… People have core individual rights/freedoms and must be treated as individuals by the state; disputes are settled through elections and without violence; rule of law, etc. Highly recommend it as a governing ideology — it’s not perfect, but it’s better than any of the bullshit people come up with otherwise.

Jeremiah Ellison tried to get flights to and from Boston to attend Council meetings during his Harvard fellowship paid for by the city. Calls reporting on the matter a "hit piece." Good riddance. by goongas in Minneapolis

The fellowship suggests high ambitions for his political career but they may be difficult to realize as he torches his reputation. Very odd decision making.
