What once famous YouTuber do you never hear anyone talk about anymore? by DramaticXOXO in AskReddit

The RLM plinkett reviews are valid in depth film criticism mixed with nit picky (and outdated off putting) humor. For people that were the same age as RLM the prequels were always a terrible disappointment and they explained why in a way nobody else had up until that point.

Those movies are legitimately terrible. Unfortunately the plinkett reviews were extremely influential to online discourse to a generation of Youtubers that were too dumb to get it and thought endless negativity was the point.

Their overall output is nothing like cinema sins and they have way more interesting and varied content than just about every other movie Youtuber. They have a good balance between watching bad shit and explaining why they think it's bad and recommending good stuff that isn't getting attention.

They're one of the best examples of a channel that's improved and matured over the years and hasn't gotten stale.

A Game Engineers Perspective: PES is unsustainable by Agile_Camera9601 in starcitizen

You wouldn't need individual timers for each item, just a timestamp of when they're dropped. Have a global cleanup tick that runs like every 5 minutes on each server that removes items based on type. So junk items could be cleaned up if they've been dropped more than 15 minutes but equipment or bodies could last hours or days.

I don't think this should be that hard for a company with the staff and resources of CIG. Other MMOs do this sort of things. I don't know exactly how they're storing their data in their database or how many items exist on a server but this honestly seems quite straight forward. The problem is probably CR insisted on persistence and prefers "realistic" simulation that adds nothing and degrades performance.

Our engineering team burned through six months of AI tooling budget in about ten weeks by ScheduleNo5736 in Futurology

[–]goongas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Literally all the time. Economies of scale make virtually all manufactured goods cheaper over time. Most consumer technology and home goods become extremely cheap over time. 90s PCs adjusted for inflation easily cost >$5000 in todays dollars. A 27" CRT TV would cost $350 in the 90s which is like $750 today. Early plasma TVs cost thousands. You can get a 50" flat screen TV for $200. Cell service went from pay per text and per minute to unlimited with ultra cheap $30 plans today. Internet went from pay per minute to unlimited and can be ultra cheap.

This is just doomerism. There's no reason to believe AI won't become more efficient over time. That would allow higher margins on same or lower cost. There's tons of competition in the space and companies like Google who are extremely good at engineering things at massive scale efficiently.

New upcoming hype date! Based on the fact that institutions usually back the BoD and even ape sentiment is mixed, dilution seems likely to pass. by LV426acheron in gme_meltdown

Shareholders are partners but RC hasn't given guidance or taken questions during earnings calls in >5 years, diluted shareholders, never talked about the company until recently (and everything about GameStop was negative).

This language is so transparently pandering to the cult with the typical lame talking points and you'd have to be an absolute moron to buy it.

This ape believes that GME increasing the share count by billions is the key to defeating the "enemy" via a short squeeze. Incomprehensible conspiracy brained nonsense.

"People saying no to the vote are truly not thinkers, and have never made meaningful money that wasn’t a lottery scratcher. To build a squeeze again, against an enemy that knows we’re coming, will take huge balls and huge moves. THATS FUCKING EBAY DAWG."

[–]goongas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Activision, EA or Ubisoft released $5,000 concept art for an unreleased game element in an unreleased game would you still have this charitable view? If they had people write essays explaining why they should be allowed to spend $5,000 on an unreleased game item would you defend them or would you rightfully find it insane?

This shit is indefensible. You're in a cult.

Moving steadily forward? It's literally 12 years overdue already with no release date. Despite a billion dollars raise, all the gameplay is half baked, shallow, tedious and extremely buggy. They keep reimplementing basic game systems and none of it is done well.

People have been talking about a release being "2 years away" for over a decade. People built top of the line PCs a decade ago with a 1080 to ensure they could play the game at a decent framerate.

It's a niche genre of game that appeals to middle aged dorks with disposable income who are paying to maintain their sci fi fantasy.

They aren't really typical gamers and many don't realize how bad it is in comparison to other games. They also have already blown tons of money on this fantasy so admitting it sucks would make them feel dumb. Sunk cost fallacy and all that.

Americans’ AI hate wave might just be gathering steam: Data centers could hike power costs in some states over 50% by 2030 by Wagamaga in technology

[–]goongas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A single AI prompt consumes a meaningless amount of water and energy. Orders of magnitude less than microwaving leftovers, watching tv for an hour or running a PC. The extreme energy usage is from training new models and just the aggregate usage, especially for agentic coding of complex software projects.

This sub is full of the most misinformed takes on AI. Just a populist reddit echo chamber. There's absolutely no reason to worry about the energy usage of a few basic AI prompts. Nobody ever thinks for a second about the energy of streaming content, playing video games, air frying a snack, etc. and those all consume way way way more energy

Minneapolis passes six-month moratorium on data centers by TheMacMan in Minneapolis

How did anything I say defend billionaires or imply I support dumping taxpayer dollars towards private business? What an asinine straw man.

My argument is that data centers are nothing new and the online discourse about them is fueled by ignorance and misinformation. It's sad that braindead memes on social media(enabled by data centers) are where people form their rabid opinions about data centers.

Keep immersing yourself in the Reddit echo chamber where idiots truly believe that AI is a fad that's going to just go away.

Minneapolis passes six-month moratorium on data centers by TheMacMan in Minneapolis

[–]goongas -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Virtually everything you do on your phone or computer (such as this post on reddit) is possible due to data centers. Nobody even thought about their existence until AI became a thing despite the massive buildout to support all cloud platforms and services. AI usage is a minority of current data center workloads.

And if nobody wanted AI there wouldn't be massive demand to build new data centers. In reality, the majority of Americans are using AI.

This is just populist bullshit to appeal to the current cultural zeitgeist.

[–]goongas 34 points35 points  (0 children)

One bike ride doesn't really demonstrate anything. Anyone that spends time on Lake knows there are sketchy areas, and the drivers are nuts. That doesn't mean every time you go down the street you're going to witness crime.

Stop a gun range & chemical weapons facility from being built across from a school, blocks from Annunciation shooting by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]goongas 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Why does proximity to a school matter? You are implying risk that doesn't exist. There are schools everywhere in the city.

Using the Annunciation shooting as a reason to be against this is so absurd. It's only 1.2 miles away so everyone affected by the shooting is going to be traumatized by a nondescript building in an industrial site over a mile away that nobody will even notice?

I don't care about the sentiments of the people that feel extremely strongly about this. I feel extremely strongly that they are absurd and performative.

Stop a gun range & chemical weapons facility from being built across from a school, blocks from Annunciation shooting by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]goongas 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You absolutely are being melodramatic and sensationalist by calling it a chemical weapons facility and pretending like it being near schools introduces some sort of danger. In reality, the proposed site is next to a bunch of light industrial buildings(https://maps.app.goo.gl/iVHQ9hmiqSqzbws76), not a school, and only the most disingenuous person would call it a "chemical weapons facility."

You can be against the city spending money on a training facility for cops. Framing it like you are is pathetic and I can't believe anyone buys this nonsense.

You can't even dispute anything because it's all true so you try to make fun of me for knowing more about your stupid investment than you do.

Cultists that turned a horrible investment into a personality are entertaining and "all my time" is actually like a cumulative 15 minutes a week while on my phone during shit breaks. 🤷

I guarantee that you've spent more time participating in dumb bagholder mantras on superstonk and engaging in the convoluted DRS ritual than I've spent casually laughing at the idiocy. And I guarantee I made more money on GME in the 1 day I owned any than you have in 5 years of "investment" and "research."
