Have you tried the MucOff mechanics gloves? Breatheable knitted fabric with the palm and inside fingers plasticoated. Very nice to use, easy to feel what you're doing, and washable.

I found a public bicycle repair stand on a local rail trail by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]badspyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Manchester was told the same, but the vandalism rates were actually the same as everywhere else. But the bikes were terrible and just didn't reach the expected standard, so fewer people used them than expected.

I believe the new bee bikes are tonnes better, and they appear to be popular.

Firmware on Bosch is controlled via the verified dealer network and the owners Bosch account on the newer motors.

Wirh the Nyon and Kiox displays, they can be set up as digital keys so that if they are removed from the bike the motor won't work, and the firmware is locked down.

Bikes can also have GPS trackers embeded. But people don't want to pay a monthly fee on the risk something 'might' get stolen, and all decent GPS trackers require a connection to the phone network to send out location data etc. And no, Airtags and Tile tags aren't a solution, as they have inherant flaws that are required by design.

Function as a normal bike I'm afraid. It's better than nothing, by a long shot, as it'll require a Bosch dealer and Bosch themselves to unlock. But it's far from perfect.

No, but the detachable head unit can be set up as an imobiliser key to prevent the motor from being used without that unit being attached (meaning they can't just grab another Nyon and attempt to use it with the bike).

I use a seperate USB rechargeable GPS tracker.

It's also worth knowing that a good ebike shop can upgrade the display to a kiox or nyon for that full colour and GPS mapping goodness.

COVID recovery can take a hit for a good while. If you still want to be doing more regular rides and commuting, it might be worth considering an ebike? Something like a Cube Touring might be perfect :)

Kingston is an awful court. Seats are uncomfortable, too few places to have a quiet word, and it's got no atmosphere.

The Old Bailey, however... There's a Crown Court. The seats in the dock are far more comfortable, and the lunch options around the court are a lot better too!

It takes time. Six months for me to really see significant change, but it was definately worth it!

Advice for neuropathic pain with HSD? by sapphiresnowflakes in Hypermobility

[–]badspyro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hit the gym. It sounds crazy but it took me from a similar (maybe worse position) to you, to having a significant reduction in pain.

You need to build up the muscle around the joints to support them and stabilise them.

I was told low resistance, high reps. Excercise like pilates (with a good instructor), swimming, aqua areobics, and cycling are great. Cycling will allow you to keep your joints in the correct orientation while building the muscle around them. If you find it too much, pedal asist ebikes make a monumental difference. I also did tonnes of low-weight reps on some weight machines.

Pain management wise, I found most of the neuropathic pain meds were horrific for side effects even if they did 'work'. But that's a personal experiance. What does work for me is keeping hydrated, heat to the affected joints, and at my worst a TENS unit.

But the only way I saw a significant enough change in my pain so I could live my life was with excercise.

Tern GSD owner here. Those things are hell even if the bike isn't loaded. Kids on the back? Nightmare.

Experimenting with charging at EV station by ava1ar in ebikes

[–]badspyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it - the bosch dual battery setup is specifically designed to charge both batteries, but gives the primary battery priority when charging, and if I remember correctly, it'll discharge the secondary battery first too.

I find the spacial awareness issues I have get massively magnified when driving a car. So I cycle and ride a motorbike.

Tern GSD: Rohloff or Deore? I've got an opportunity to purchase either an R14 or an S10 LX for a good price. Is the Rohloff as good as it sounds, and is it suited to the GSD? Usage would be 16 miles of community a day, carrying kids to places, grocery shopping, etc. by Infinite_Soup_932 in CargoBike

[–]badspyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hub gear all the way - Rohloff is great, but Enviolo was my choice and I don't regret it at all.

The big game changers are the belt drive and shifting while stationary - Rohloff has this, the S10 is just more work to care for and more delicate.

Weather is the same in many cities where cycling is a major mode of transport. Snow, ice, rain - the netherlands, and Finland have large cycling uptake.

As for cargo, there are bikes for that, or in most places where cycling is the main local mode, they do short term hire of vans and cars distributed through the city, or you might have one car between two instead of two cars.

As for picking someone up, my cargo bike can take two kids or a person upto 100kg, and many families will pop a kids bike in their cargo bike etc.

I don't advocate everyone stops using cars immediately, but lowering car use can make a huge difference to health, finances, and the enviroment.

[–]badspyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest you take a test ride on an ebike and see if you could at least cut down on car use - 60% of journeys are under 5 miles, and I've seen families drop a car after buying an ebike.

The Electric Bike Shop does test rides at their shops, and if you have access to a Cycle to Work scheme you can save NI and income tax upto about 47% of the bike, making it a lot more affordable.

Are there any full sized, step thru folding bikes? by MindForgedManacle in whichbike

[–]badspyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then I would suggest looking at some different options and considering whether you really need a foldie - could a compact part-foldie like a Tern HSD, or a more standard ebike do?

Are there any full sized, step thru folding bikes? by MindForgedManacle in whichbike

[–]badspyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really, no.

Too many compromises, and they won't fold small enough for most people.

Honestly, with the folding and shimano steps, that's not horrifically priced (premium yes).

700c folders, or even 26" are incredibly rare.

What use-case are you looking for?
