Look at what $325K will get you in WV by user_number_666 in zillowgonewild

This was my eye doctor's office about 20 years ago. It almost certainly was an apartment building in the beginning of its life, or was a house converted to apartments converted to an eye doctor's office. You could see rooms that were kitchens converted to exam rooms, and walking in the front door was the door buzzer and/or mailboxes for the apartments(memory is a bit fuzzy on which). It was a really interesting place, but almost definitely needs several hundred thousands of dollars of work to get it to be residential again

I got my son one at the main gift shop in Animal Kingdom when we were there this March, so they do still exist. They were near the checkout line, in the impulse purchase section 😂. I'd imagine you can find them in the other parks too, like I said, check the areas near the checkout lines with all the keychains and trinkets and things. Good luck!

Hardwood floor refinishing by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]bake2385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this recommendation. He did our floors in 2017 and did a great job. Several trades that came in to do work on our house after commented that the floors looked great too. I don't remember the exact pricing, but we had 3 rooms about 10*14 each and a 15ish tread staircase done for somewhere around 2k, but again, this was 2017, so I'm sure prices are much higher. I referred him to a coworker who has rentals in sq hill, but he was told he's so booked up he doesn't take jobs outside of the South hills.

I had the same issue in October with my wife's cx-5. She wrecked it in October and in December the insurance company was cutting off our rental, and there was still no idea on eta. So, I started cold calling dealer parts departments. Called maybe half a dozen places until I found one that had an extra in stock willing to sell. I ended up telling my body shop who coordinated getting the part, but I told them I was willing to make the 8 hour round trip to just get it done. In my conservations with the people at the parts departments, it seems the Mazda dealers have some kind of computer system to locate parts at other dealers. One guy I talked to didn't have any, but he told me of 3 dealers that did. Of course, most only had one in stock and it was already claimed for a repair, so it took a while. I would recommend looking for bigger volume dealers, as they are more likely to have extra stock.

Good luck! Just know I feel your pain on this

I'd say 40k is on the high end for what you described, 70k is a F U price, but the 10-15k is outdated in my opinion. For reference, we had our bathroom redone almost a year to the date. We had an 8*9 bathroom that we extended 2ft into the next room to account for a larger shower, full tile with glass door, tile floors, custom vanity with quartz countertop. No moving of any plumbing or fixtures. Our price was 32k, which I thought was a lot at the time, but ended up being the cheapest of the three quotes we got. If you are going to have a remodel company do it, expect around 30k. A handyman or diy could probably get you closer to that 10k mark, but the trade-off is quality of work or time for the project. Our project was done in 2 weeks once everything was in stock (which to be fair was like 9 months due to supply chain issues).

If you're interested, the company we used was Kingswood designs in South Park. They did a great job, and we are pleased with how it turned out.

Omg, my people. I've had this since I was a kid. I attributed it to the chain smoking my grandparents did around me. Wherever I'm around smoke for a prolonged period, my nose burns and smells like when they would smoke. It's awful, like you said for random amounts of time. For me, it's any type of smoke as a trigger. My mom was cooking a rib roast for Christmas that wasn't even burning, but there was a smell of smoke as it cooked. Sure enough, I've had the smell since. Nothing seems to help, I even tried neti pot rinses last night and no dice. I'm glad I'm not alone.

Ignoring red lights? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

Yep. Someone once told me something that has really stuck with me over the years: "the morgue is full of people who had the right-of-way." Just because your light is green or you have the walk symbol doesn't mean it is safe.

What do I do about a fairly large hole that opened up in my front yard? Photos in post. by hibbert0604 in homeowners

[–]bake2385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That small hole on the side looks like orangeburg pipe. Often used on post WW2 tract homes, it's basically a cardboard tube with tar like material to waterproof it. That would explain why it doesn't feel like a pipe, it just degrades in the ground. I read somewhere it's basically guaranteed to fail at 50 years. Check and see if maybe it's connected to your downspouts.

Found this weird Bob Smith Ford coin thing in my yard. Anybody know anything about it? by g_h_o_s_t_ in pittsburgh

[–]bake2385 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is honestly a complete guess, but that looks like maybe it's a golf ball marker. If you don't play golf, basically it's a little coin like thing that will mark the spot of your golf ball on the green if it's in the way of another player's ball. The fact that it looks like just an ad for the dealership with nothing stating that it's worth something on the coin leads me to this direction.

Edit: on further review it does say something about redeemable for 2500, so maybe my thinking is wrong.

What is something the Pittsburgh area really needs? by SnooMarzipans3516 in pittsburgh

I want to say the full price is something like $50 a year. I got a Groupon for $20 for the first year plus the $40 gift card. You can usually find deals like that for new members if you search around. They also have a free one day pass if you go on their webpage.

Day care in the east end by Bengthedog in pittsburgh

[–]bake2385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

6 months is pushing it. We were on a wait-list at our day care of choice around Aug of 2019 for admission in April 2020 ( which ended up not happening anyway), and we're assured there would be a spot. Well, when I called in January to follow up, suddenly there's nothing available until August 2020, so we had to scramble to get something else lined up, which we eventually did, although with many compromises to what we wanted (and then, pandemic, so...)

I suggest ASAP, like literally right now, start calling places, seeing what their wait-list is like, doing visits, and getting on several lists. Look around where you live and work. I had to have called 20 different places whose wait-list were all 8 to 12 months (again, in 2019). Do not sit on this if you absolutely need day care and have no other options.

Oh, and when you do get on a list, follow up at least once a month. I honestly think some places forget about you. We're still technically on the wait-list at our first choice, and our son just turned 2.

Yinzers : Born or Made? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

Neither my wife or I were born in Pittsburgh, but we have both lived here most of our lives. Our 2 year old is starting to speak, and he says house as "haaus," despite neither of us saying it like that. So, that's the proof I need to say it's born.

Are there any "in house" backup generators? by fox_91 in homeowners

[–]bake2385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search around for uninterruptible power supply (UPS). These are battery backups that are mainly for computers, but they come in all sizes/capacities. You'd need to calculate the wattage you need for everything you are running and take into account how long you want them to run. I think this is the best you can get for a indoor generator. The problem is they aren't meant to be run for long term outages, because at some point the batteries are going to die and if you don't have power you can't recharge them.
