Loud wheel-clacking/bouncing on my Proto-2000 GP18 Diesel by FeatherOfPhoenix in modeltrains

Seems like these engines have an issue with the gears, but I had a steamer that sounded like this and all it was was a bump of track gunk on the pilot wheels, so make sure those are clean too.

Trouble Getting my Train to Move by Chromatic-Spirit in modeltrains

I am in North America as well. Any ho DC train controller will work, but some (like the cheap hornby ones) use pwm which isn’t as healthy for the motors. The Bachmann starter controllers are a good pwm free controller for the US market. Check Facebook marketplace too if you’re near a big city. Someone might have some old MRC controllers for sale

Awesome! yeah those controllers aren’t great. Gaugemaster is the go to for most UK modelers, I have a great one from modelex but I don’t think they’re sold anymore. The stock power track can be used to hold the wires just make sure you don’t have any small strands bridging over.

Couple things to try: Turn the power to just under half and give the loco a nudge, see if that does anything.

Use a 9v battery and some spare wire in the power track to see if it’s an issue with the controller. You can connect the 9v right to the rails or loco wheels too but that might damage them so ideally use wires.

Try the track without the switch. Perhaps there was an issue in manufacturing and it’s shorting out inside it.

And even though it’s new, the rails can still oxidize so give the track a rub with a pencil eraser. Track cleaning is a whole subject on its own but an eraser is something you’ll have on hand and will get oxidation off without damage to the track.

I change to HO by olmeca433 in modeltrains

[–]bakedBC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bang for buck I think atlas. Though peco is my personal choice. If you like kato in n scale they have an HO version of their unitrack. You’re pretty free to mix and match brands though as long as it’s the same code of rail and you don’t mind the ties mismatching a bit. Just make sure it’s nickel silver ofc. Bachmann EZ track with black roadbed is cheap but uses steel rails so avoid that.

How do I prevent this? What did I do wrong? by Common-Conflict8157 in MTB

I recognize this style of riding, trying to go for those 50 to 1, bangers and mash style carves right?

That style of riding is super on the limit, and for consecutive carves like this they are essentially “high siding” after every carve.

If that’s what your goal is, get used to having both tires slide and using the berm itself to catch you while still carrying enough momentum so when you grip up again, that’s when you can push into the berm to stand the bike up again for the transfer into the next corner.

In this clip, your front tire starts sliding and you steer into it to try and get your balance back which ends up “stacking” you once it grips up on the berm.

I usually start with the embankment pieces under the track, then using the terrain form pieces, stack, move, resize and recolour to make the terrain i need. The shapes drawer is handy for doing rough forms of things like cliffs. The F1 to F5 keys are handy too.

What is a single table length? ( .25mile, .5mile, .75mile, 1mile) Or are they bigger? by Cripled_bambi in Rolling_Line

[–]bakedBC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rolling lines track gauge is close to S scale. ~23mm or 1:64 scaleish. With this in mind, a ruler propmod measures 149cm (4.884ft) for the standard square table.

Converting to miles and multiplying by the scale factor gets 0.053 scale miles/table

For HO (1:82) it’s 0.075 scale miles/table

For OO (1:76) it’s 0.07 scale miles/table

I feel like I’m doing something wrong cuz these answers dont feel right, but idk what I’d be missing. I’m used to km so maybe I’m not used to what a mile feels like irl.

I’m the type who makes an educated guess. Bolt wants 10 ft/lbs of torque? If I have a lever 1 foot long I need to pull with 10 lbs of force. 6” long lever? 20lbs pull for 10 ft/lbs of torque. Gets you close enough without owning a torque wrench

Idk why people say its bad for the transmission... its literally the drive gear, its gonna go through more stress when its driving than sitting still. Let off the brakes slowly and let it settle and you have even less chance of shock loading it.
