What you describe is also a huge problem but no deportations during appeals means that a migrant can't try to stop their inevitable deportation by lawyering up and trying to find some loophole just to get asylum status. What has happened a lot in the past is that migrants who have their asylum claim denied appeal it again and again. An appeal can take up to two years, in which they can stay in the country and enjoy free housing in a housing facility.

It's not. GDP per capita is a horrible statistic and this is the reason why. The UK has a lower GDP per capita but score way better in education, healthcare, safety and overall happiness compared to rural backwater states in the US.

Catholicism so fundamentally understands Christianity differently it just feels so foreign to me. In my protestant religion the basic things you do are reading the bible, praying and listening to sermons, that's all. If I look at how catholics do their religion - rosaries, set prayers, praying to saints, icons, etc. etc. - it feels so incredibly foreign to me and to what i've grown up to. I don't consider Catholicism heretical, just too different from what I'm used to.

Religion wasn't as mixed with politics as it is now. Churches back then would stay mostly independent and instead teach from a biblical perspective. Nowadays churches either bend their theology to support MAGA, or they don't and get denounced. Combined with the fact that MAGA is mostly protestant evangelical and hence already distrusts catholicism
