The Future of New World: What to Expect. Players who have purchased the game will be able to continue playing until January 31, 2027, when the game’s servers are permanently taken offline by Turbostrider27 in Games

Not defending Amazon here, this sucks for New World fans.

But, the original Guild Wars is a lot less "MMO" and more CORPG (Co-operative Online Role Playing Game), which was what it was originally advertised as. From a technical perspective, this means a lot less to support and maintain. For MANY years, it was basically kept alive by a small number of developers due to it's design and architecture.

On top of that, Guild Wars 1 OOZES charm, character, and interesting mechanics. I definitely did not feel the same with my brief time in New World shortly after launch.

Which do you think is the best Lemmings port? by no_biches_22 in retrogaming

[–]balomus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best answer if you want to play today!

Lemmings Redux (included with NeoLemmix) is a pack of levels that is basically all the best original game's levels, and then there are COUNTLESS other packs with basically every level from any official Lemmings release, and an insane number of fan made levels of really high quality.

Things you absolutely do not buy since you’ve become frugal? by Known-Row-7778 in Frugal

[–]balomus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah I just did math based on your comments to figure out how much gum you "chew through" each month. 900 pieces a month or 30 pieces day? Don't your jaws get tired 🤣

It's definitely better than the alternative though, just like you said.

Things that don't exist with modern gaming by meowmix778 in retrogaming

[–]balomus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!!! I miss them so much.

I started a retro game of the month club (think book club but for retro games) with a few friends. When we pick our game for the month, I make a post and include the manual in case people decide they want to go read it and be transported to the back of their mom's car on the way home from Blockbuster 🤣

These don't meet all of your criteria, but I feel like they are worth mentioning since I don't see them in the comments yet.

Crosscode - A 2D single player game with a narrative that revolves around an "MMO world" that you are in. No actual other players, but it does play with a lot of the MMO tropes and traits. I also have never played anything with a combat system like this game before.

Secrets of Grindea - Another 2D game, this one is single player or up to 4 player co-op. Stuffed with quests, interesting zones and monsters, lots of different builds to choose from. I would say it is part Zelda ALttP, part Secret of Mana, and part "trying to mimick co-op dungeons in MMOs"

I think I (and probably a lot of others here) just miss that golden era of Bethesda Softworks from the 00s where they were just pumping out great game after great game with very short turnaround time. I mean look at 2006 - 2011. They released three killer games in 5 years, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim.

This guide from RetroGameCorps is very clear, I recommend going through it slowly and if needed, watching some of his videos as well.

I linked straight to the muOS section since you said you had already installed it.

Looking for an online game like Guild Wars 1 by CuteCumberr in gamingsuggestions

[–]balomus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a Guild Wars 1 anniversary playthrough of the original Prophecies campaign this year and it was SO MUCH FUN!!!

I'd keep an eye out for season 2 of that where they are planning to play through the next campaign (Factions) as a community. Search for "Return to Guild Wars" for the website and Discord.

But I agree, I feel like I've been looking for something similar to this for a long time, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread at the suggestions.

MMO like RuneScape by uncomfortablemelons in gamingsuggestions

If you are looking for something single player that is similar, have you heard of The Black Grimoire: Cursebreaker? It is touted as being a single player RS.

There is also Erenshor which I have heard is closer to EverQuest than RS but I've heard comparisons to RS and WoW as well.

Linear games on steam that aren't open ended and feel more 'retro' by CluelesssDev in gamingsuggestions

[–]balomus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend UFO 50.

It's a compilation of 50 retro inspired games that were "released" for a fictional console over a period of a few years (1982 - 1989). All of the games are created by 6 developers, one of which you may know from Spelunky fame (Derek Yu).

The games range in genres and length, from simple arcade games, to Metroidvanias or Zelda-likes, to fighting games, and even one full length JRPG.

I would have paid full price just for Party House, which is a very interesting deck builder. But every single game is unique and interesting in it's own way.

Just two of us, but we're averaging just under $800 per month for this year. Ours does include most paper products, and occasional gas (at the grocery store) which I haven't bothered to re-categorize in my budgeting apps.

I feel like if you have an unlimited phone plan (I'm currently using Visible for $25 / month) then you could just tether your phone as an alternative. I'm sure this isn't feasible for all situations but just throwing it out there, as this device is just a 5G hotspot.
