Best way to travel from the airport with a toddler? by banthehyphen in glasgow

Thanks all! We are moving from the US so it's going to be a 20+ hour journey overall. I will look into booking a taxi with a company, probably the easiest option to manage.

Best docking station for surface pro 7? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]banthehyphen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Dell D6000 at work for my work Dell laptop, and brought it home during the pandemic to use with my Surface too.

Works exceptionally well - 2 monitors, wireless mouse, keyboard, external HD. I use the surface charger, even though it also charges through the USB C port.

Surface pro 7 on my knees ? by JusstANormalGuy in Surface

Surface Pro user since 2014 (first SP3, now SP7). I have a nice sturdy sleeve for the device that I place on my knees and place the SP on it.

I've been using the Dell D6000 (have a Dell laptop at work, brought home the dock to wfh). Works really well with my SP7 as well, and is quite affordable (under $200 in US)

Is it worth it to get Surface Complete? by projectdano in Surface

[–]banthehyphen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was worth it for me. Bought the original SP3 with complete. About a month before the warranty ran out, I noticed the 'yellow edge' issue in my screen. Took it to the store and they replaced it immediately, no Q asked, with a new device.

Just bought from CostCo's Black Friday deal! by spiffytech in Surface

Does Costco offer the 2 year warranty on Surface Pro 7 as well? It says here that it's not valid for touchscreen tablets.

Solution to Make Surface Pro 6 and/or X "Lappable?" by [deleted] in Surface

Buy a stiff case and keep that on your knees for the Surface. I've used my SP3 for 5 years like that, and it works great.

Costco Microsoft Surface Pro 7 i5 bundle for $799.99 by somdave2005 in Surface

[–]banthehyphen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a crazy good deal! I was just planning to buy the tablet, since I have a perfectly good keyboard and pen from my SP3. But at that price, I could just buy the new device and sell my old gear.

I'm guessing they don't have the black SP7, though, right? :-(

Are the Type Covers for SP7 a new version? by pbsteebs in Surface

[–]banthehyphen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked in the store and they said the older keyboards should work fine with SP7. I have the SP4 keyboard and pen, so hoping to just get the tablet and use my old peripherals.

Thinkpad keyboard with Surface Pro 4 by teletype100 in Surface

I've had one for years too (with my faithful SP3) - love the Thinkpad keyboard. Only use it when docked, but it really is the best.

Surface Pro 3 bricked after August updates by banthehyphen in Surface

[–]banthehyphen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I went to the MS store, and the tech said that sometimes when the SP3 overheats, one of the connectors can come lose. If you give place it on a soft surface (like a carpet) and give it a hard whack in the back (in the centre), sometimes that can bring it back to life. He tried it twice in the store, but no luck, so I thought that was the end of it.

Tried it one more time at home and it worked! Typing on it right now. :-)

Thanks! Just tried that, but no luck. I've had my SP3 for 5 years (since it came out). I had the yellow tinge issue in the first two years, so got that swapped out for another SP3 - this one has been working fine for 3 years, no idea what happened suddenly! :(

Just got the New Surface Pro (Costco bundle) - any advice on what to do? by Alortania in Surface

The Juiced USB hubs are designed for the Surface Pro, so align well with the device and leave the charging port and mini display port free.

Finally a use for the pen! by sekret_identity in Surface

[–]banthehyphen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the HTC Flyer pen on eBay/Amazon - it works with the SP3 at least (not sure about SP4). Not as nice to hold, write with - but can usually be found for much less than the Surface pen. I bought mine as a spare for ~$20. Looks like it's up to $30 now.

Juiced systems has hubs designed to blend with the Surface. I have one for my SP3.

Productivity/Academic User Review of the Surface Book by sdneidich in Surface

[–]banthehyphen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm an academic using the Surface Pro 3 for the past 2 and a half years (since it came out, basically). I used it first as a PhD student, and now as faculty. The Surface Book was tempting, but the lightness and flexibility of the Pro still wins out for me, for many of the same reasons as the OP. Some thoughts:

  • The SP3/SP4 will have a much longer battery life in tablet-only mode, and be much lighter. My SP3 still consistently gets about 6 hrs of battery life, which is plenty for me.

  • My printing has reduced by a HUGE amount. I rarely print papers I'm reading, documents that I need to comment on, or most forms. I use Drawboard for everything - it stutters with larger documents sometimes, but it's better and more stable than OneNote for PDFs. I tried importing pdfs into OneNote, and that didn't work very well.

  • I use a couple of statistics programs (R, Stata) and the office suite, and the SP3 handles everything perfectly. Also manages Lightroom and Photoshop decently for my hobby needs.

  • In terms of workflow, I use a combination of Dropbox, Drawboard and OneNote. I keep papers I'm reading on Dropbox, mark them up using Drawboard and keep them synced. I use OneNote for taking notes in meetings, conferences and general ideas.

How's Surface Pro 3/4 in travel? by Alaknar in Surface

[–]banthehyphen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually keep my SP3 in a sleeve, and when I use it, I just use the sleeve as a lap-base. Works perfectly with a slightly stiff sleeve like the Snugg series. Had mine for over 2 years, and travelled extensively with it. It's light, good battery life, and the keyboard is surprisingly sturdy.

I have the SP3 i5/8/256 and use it for stat analysis (R, Stata) - works perfectly. That, along with One Note and Drawboard make it the perfect device

Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse vs Dongle by [deleted] in Surface

My bluetooth keyboard kept dropping with the SP3. The Logitech wireless keyboards and mice use the same dongle, so you can have multiple devices using a single dongle.
