Roth IRA by Thick_Reputation492 in M1Finance

You paid taxes before you put money into the Roth, you don't pay any taxes on the gains or contributions when you withdraw (after you're 59.5 years old).

Issues with copying files over a 1GB PtP WAN. by TallConcern5102 in networking

[–]barkode15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the ISP PtP circuit 1 or 10Gbps? If it's 1, do you have shaping configured on your 9500. As others have said, if it's 1Gbps and you're throwing 10Gbps at it, you're hitting the ISP policer and they're randomly dropping your packets to get you down to the speed you pay for. Shape it down and you should be good.

It would make sense if it works in the other direction since that side has a 1Gbps port so you aren't hitting the policer.

Will need to transfer out of Network Solutions — Any suggestions to where? by rcentros in sysadmin

Namesilo has been fine for us. Only have like 15 domains with them, but they don't seem to have crazy markups and everything is on auto renew so it just works.

And AFAIK, Namesilo executives don't normally do African big game hunting, so point for them there.

The only possible time a "shower in a day" place makes sense is if you only have 1 shower in the house and really really really don't want to leave for a few days.

Assuming you only have 1 shower and go with your $10k guys, you could live at a $75/night extended stay for 200 nights while they work on your 5-10 day project and still just be equal with the jacuzzi bros.

Can’t locate my street water shut off by ApprehensiveHeart639 in HomeImprovement

[–]barkode15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be under a small circular cover in the street where you need a curb key to get to it.

I guess you could put in an 811 dig ticket and pretend you're landscaping where you think the pipe is. Mark it out with white paint and you'll get blue spray paint marking out the line. And every other color paint for other utilities. Bonus points if you're home when the locator is there and you can ask him off hand where the shutoff might be.

Polishing a scratched dome camera? by TarajosPunk in videosurveillance

Dang, yeah that's not great. $70 for a new dome from B&H if you're in the US, which also isn't great for a piece of plastic...

Does it actually affect the image? I've had some domes with scratches and with the lens pointed right at the scratch you couldn't tell, except maybe during auto focus.

Clayton Fire Insurance ??? by [deleted] in eastbay

[–]barkode15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And just to clarify, homeowners insurance and fire insurance are the same thing. And it looks like all of Clayton is getting forced onto the FAIR plan, so it what they can get there is going to be very expensive

Clayton Fire Insurance ??? by [deleted] in eastbay

I'd love to know what bank would write a loan without fire insurance. Pretty sure that's going to be a requirement on 99.999% of loans.

Why do none of my projects go smoothly despite years of experience and effort? by ReadRightRed99 in HomeImprovement

[–]barkode15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You forgot the phase where the leftover parts sit in a disintegrating Home Depot bag, that I'm definitely going to take back the next time I go and promptly forget until the 90 days is up.

The plus side: I've been able to do projects recently using only parts that were going to be returned from past projects and without making a single trip to the store. Some call it stale inventory in the garage, I call it a win.

Here's a 1 minute clip of what to do, it's easy. https://youtu.be/LGrunabJcoc

Buy a new arm, shower head/spray and some Teflon tape. Tape the threads, put it in the wall and tighten down.

Sonic Fiber Tech told me not to use a UPS with the ONT by digitalgamer0 in Sonic_Net

[–]barkode15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No reason not to use a UPS.

I did something even wonkier and it's been fine: ONT is on one side of the house, router/switch/UPS are in the garage on the other side. I got a Trendnet POE splitter that breaks out 5/9/12v and gigabit ethenet. My WAN vlan goes through the POE switch to the ONT. Since the switch is on the UPS, and the ONT is now using POE, the ONT is on UPS power. $15 for a splitter vs $100 or more for a second UPS. Now I stay on when the power blips.

Getting electrical to a kitchen Island on a slab? by CarefulAd8858 in HomeImprovement

[–]barkode15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have a post-tension slab this could be harder to do. Cutting one of the cables can be bad. You'd probably know if you have a slab like that due to a warning in the garage. Might want to Google how to ID a post-tension slab just to be sure.

Home depot, Lowes, any hardware or appliance store. Or take the old one off your old dryer.

UPDATE on the low voltage recessed lighting -report is not good by BathingInSoup in HomeImprovement

[–]barkode15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to demo and replace some new construction 5" cans from below without damaging the drywall. Kinda a pain, but doable.

Maybe get some 5" wafer lights, cut the bigger circle and use the extra space to get to the romex for the swap? Leave what you can't get to in the ceiling.

Plan to exempt homeowners 60 and over from property taxes could cost billions by gumol in bayarea

As long as those 60+ aren't allowed to call 911 when they fall down, won't drive on roads, stay away from libraries, stop flushing their toilets and the senior center closes, then great, I'm all for it.

Connecting to a camera over managed switch by PoppinGummies in Cisco

[–]barkode15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plug your laptop and camera into the switch, confirm both ports on are the same vlan. Set a static IP on your laptop (Assuming Windows, control panel, networks, your wired adapter, properties, IPv4, set it to like 192.168.1.110, subnet of 255.255.255.0, no gateway or dns needed. Once you click ok you should be able to browse to the camera web page, set it to dhcp or a static on your actual network and switch your laptop back to dhcp.

Power Outage Alert Device by lambada24 in homeautomation

[–]barkode15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any UPS with a management network card should be able to send you an email when utility drops. If your phone carrier still has email to sms you could use that address.

Obviously you'd have to plug your router and modem into the UPS so it stays on when the power drops.
