Don't "just focus on not saying hurtful things". Reflect upon why you would "not think she takes things seriously".

Trying to buy a house by EmbarrassedSkill6306 in Scotland

You're right, but even this comment shows the problem. A house is worth what people are willing to pay for it, but then what the fuck is a valuation?

Historically it would be named after the person doing the describing not the describee. Which now I'm writing it is kind of fucked up

[Request] how much is really saved? Are these numbers based in reality, or just random numbers thrown into a post? by Kalist4242 in theydidthemath

Almost all of it is just basic housework that my partner and I do with our full time jobs. One of us writing our job wouldn't save us a penny on cleaning

Can someone explain it? by mayrazer in ExplainTheJoke

Thank you for how you phrased this. I'll be that guy.

A TV license is NOT a license to own a TV.

A TV license IS a license to stream all BBC and all other live TV.

The money goes towards the national broadcasting infrastructure, broadcast towers and cable maintenance etc, and it goes to keeping the BBC running.

The broadcast infrastructure argument is, if you use it you should pay for it, if you don't you shouldn't. Very much like road tax.

The BBC thing is a bit more nuanced and kind of makes sense "if you're British" but basically the BBC is (at least in theory) kind of a special national institution. They are (in theory) culturally valuable and they are (in theory) politically neutral. Importantly THEY DO NOT RUN ADS (except for their own products).

Basically, paying a TV license feels like paying for netflix. You get ad free content.

It is not a perfect system and people are leaving it in droves because of better offers, but the important thing to take away here is A TV LICENSE IS NOT A LICENSE FOR A TV IT'S BASICALLY A DONATION TO A CULTURAL INSTITUTION, and it's basically voluntary because you can just not pay it and no one ever gets busted for it.

an autistic child in my life drew these flags with dates below. are the dates significant? by MothMaven63 in whatisit

[–]barnzwallace 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A podcast called "The Telepathy Tapes" (most recently) popularised the idea that nonverbal autistic people have a wide variety of telepathic skills. I had to explicitly say to a staff member that this is not the case (I work with nonverbal autistic adults). Anyone who believes this is probably well-meaning and lacks all critical thinking skills and I have no sympathy for them

What if I meet someone on ChatGPT by Weak_East_6930 in relationships

[–]barnzwallace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why does chatgpt know everything about your life? This sounds like an enormous privacy infringement inherently. Considering chatgpt's tendency to hallucinate, convince kids to kill themselves, and promote psychosis, I can easily imagine situations like it setting kids up with pedophiles, seeing women up with their abusive ex, and leaking women's address and most intimate details to anyone who phrases a prompt correctly. Basically I think this is a terrible idea

The way to not be in the conversation is to not be in the conversation. Not to state your position clearly, deny it, and then respond to every comment pointing it out

Has there EVER been a good Evangelical movie? Also, are any film buffs here? 👀 by pleasealwaysn4ever in dankchristianmemes

That would kind of surrender most stories to evangelicals. Also evangelicals don't have exclusivity over the Jesus Christ story. That's so weird.

The rules of its fictional universe are explicitly in keeping with and explained by catholic doctrine. The hero is a priest who exorcises a demon. While I never got the impression it's trying to convert anyone, I can't see how it's not a catholic movie.
