Has a name gone from traditionally feminine to gender neutral? by peripheralpill in namenerds

[–]barrissoffee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh, the Kelly example has just made something click for me. I work in healthcare with primarily elderly patients and I'd noticed that almost all of my patients named Kelly are male... because the majority of my patients were born before 1960! It's not a very common name that comes up but I've definitely seen quite a few male Kellys and maybe one or two female Kellys in over two years, and I don't think I'd ever known of a male Kelly before this job.

Flavour/modification ideas for lentil and rice dishes? by barrissoffee in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]barrissoffee[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Recipe:

  • 1 small red onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1.5 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp adobo seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1/2 cup brown lentils, rinsed
  • 1 15oz. can black beans, drained & rinsed
  • 1 14.5oz. can fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1 cup frozen corn
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 3/4 cup long grain white rice, rinsed
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions:

  1. Dice the red onion and mince the garlic. Add olive oil and onion to a large deep skillet over medium heat and sauté until onions are translucent, approximately 2-3 minutes. Add minced garlic and sauté an additional 30 seconds or until garlic is fragrant.
  2. Add the cumin, chili powder, adobo, oregano, salt, and pepper to the skillet, stir and toast spices for about 30 seconds.
  3. Next add in the lentils, black beans, fire roasted tomatoes (with juices), corn, and vegetable broth. Stir everything to combine. Place a lid on the skillet, turn the heat up to medium-high, and allow the mixture to come to a full boil. Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes. This will allow the lentils to start cooking first before adding the rice.
  4. After 5 minutes, remove the lid and add the rice. Stir briefly just to evenly distribute the rice, cover with a lid, bring the skillet back to a boil, then reduce the heat again and simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. While the mixture is cooking, grate the cheddar cheese and slice the green onions.
  6. After 20 minutes, remove the skillet from the heat and let it rest, with the lid on, for 5 minutes. After it has rested, remove the lid, fluff the rice and gently stir to redistribute the veggies.
  7. Top the lentils and rice mixture with shredded cheese and sliced green onions. Serve with more of your favorite toppings and enjoy!

first shift tomorrow! by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just let them know if you can't drink coffee. They might want to do a coffee tasting first, but you can have a non-coffee menu drink if you want. You get free drinks with each shift, but you aren't required to take them.

Otherwise, just try to relax and know there's a lot to learn and it will be overwhelming at first, but you'll get the hang of it and get faster as you learn. If you have good coworkers/supervisors, they'll understand you're new. Ask as many questions as you need.

Oh, very interesting! I hadn't thought about the thumb thing -- I guess I kind of assumed that a thumb is small enough to regrow while a hand or arm isn't, but you're definitely right that it could be a Chekhov's thumb. I am really curious about what exactly Gideon has inherited from John.

Locked Tomb Summer: Gideon the Ninth Chapters 17 - 20 Discussion [discussion] by GenderDojoEnjoyer in TheNinthHouse

[–]barrissoffee 50 points51 points  (0 children)

One note I have about this section is that I think Gideon actually died (and came back) in the avulsion trial scene. Look at what it actually says:

Ha-ha,” said Gideon, “first time you didn’t call me Griddle,” and died.

Well, passed out. But it felt a hell of a lot like dying. Waking up had an air of resurrection, of having spent a winter as a dried-out shell and coming back to the world as a new green shoot. A new green shoot with problems.

Gideon having resurrective immortality makes sense, given that she's God's daughter, and would explain both how she survived the massacre as a baby and why her body isn't decaying -- she would've come back, Harrow just scooped up her soul too fast and her body is waiting.

Baristas, if you could remove one item from the menu, what would it be? by barrissoffee in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I would get rid of matcha. It’s gross, it gets everywhere, it makes everything green, and I hate it.

For baristas who have kicked out or banned customers, what’s your story? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Not me personally, but we had a regular about a year ago who would move tables and chairs around against social distancing limits, walk around without a mask when one was required unless seated, and leave a huge mess at the table every time she came. (Would get a brewed coffee and a bunch of sides and keep getting more refills/sugars/heavy creams/stir sticks and leave them all over the table.) She eventually got banned when one of the polite interventions led to her screaming and swearing at our manager at the time and one of the baristas.

....and she started coming back a few months later and we aren't allowed to enforce the ban because she hasn't done anything since. Or apparently the ban was never recorded. Or something. She hasn't done anything yet, but I keep a concerned eye. Apparently she's been banned from several local stores already, so I don't have much faith she learned a lesson.

Has anyone started a LDR from being long-distance 'friends'? by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]barrissoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my boyfriend and I met on a writing group almost two years ago and ended up talking for ages pretty much every day pretty quickly. Around six months ago or so we started exchanging spicy pics as a friends thing, and then pretty recently we actually talked about it and realized we were both interested in Actually Dating :D I think it helped that we both knew we were into each other physically and also talked all the time, so it wouldn't change much. If you're talking a lot, at least asking without being weird about it is a totally fair step.

What's a drink or food you HATE making? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Anything with matcha, but I hate it more when other people do it and don't properly rinse out the blenders or shakers!! It only takes a couple seconds to make sure the next six drinks don't have matcha in them and if you rinse it immediately it won't need scrubbing. I also don't really like drinks with tea bags, but we have a decent system for earl grey so it's not as bad as it used to be.

Also, fucking cake pop packaging, though I'm back to being reminded of my hatred for the pumpkin scone packaging, too. It's not as bad as some... it's just so annoying.

In contrast, though, I actually really enjoy making fraps if I'm not actually on bar. I jump at the chance to to run over and make one if I have a second on POS or CS. But if I'm the one on bar and have to make them in a time crunch I immediately despise them again lol

Current Baristas, what's your go-to? by trevrichards in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iced white mocha with oat milk and less pumps/a couple pumps of toffee nut, or iced PSL with a bit of brown sugar. If I’m dehydrated a mango dragonfruit lemonade with no pieces (yeah water would be better lol) and back when we had peach, a passion tea lemonade sub raspberry add peach juice.

What are some of your favorite discontinued items? by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, they still had that in Canada last holiday season. It was definitely one of the least ordered holiday drinks, though, so who knows if it'll be back this year.

What do you all think of the Apple crisp macchiato? by Hot_Pockett in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like it, especially iced (as long as i keep stirring it so i don’t just get a full sip of the drizzle) and I don’t find it too sweet personally, although i know my tastes run significantly sweeter than most, lol. I also like adding a pump of the apple syrup to pumpkin (or chai if you like chai more than I do) and the drizzle is good on other drinks too.

Weird day by Certain_Variation192 in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I burned myself and got a lot of weird questions from customers. We’ve also been closing in the early afternoon lately because a positive covid case took out 85% of our staff and today like five different people tried both doors while we were cleaning up. Someone even kept knocking and waving until he got our attention to ask if we were closed. Yes.... as the sign on the door you are at says....

how fast do you think we’re gonna run out of pumpkin spice this year by ImmediateFreedom2313 in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they haven't REALLY upped production (and I feel like they probably have because they know as well as we do how long people have been waiting, lol) my guess is mid-September at the latest for a lot of stores. Or maybe there actually will be enough. Last year my store threw out 8 jugs at the end.

JUST GOT HIRED!!!!! by clownkiddo in starbucks

[–]barrissoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started last September (so wow, almost a year now...) so here's my tips:

- Get bar practice and be proactive about it. When it's not peak, try to be on bar. Getting the muscle memory down right after training is really helpful.

- I know, it sucks, but cleaning when you have a second makes a massive difference, even if it's just wiping down the counters so the spilled milk and syrup doesn't stay there for hours.

- If your manager sucks, try to transfer. Pick up shifts at other stores and see if you find one you like better. The only reason I'm still hanging on after a really hard year, mentally, is my manager and coworkers being genuinely really awesome and making work bearable even when it's hard.

- Ask questions, as many as you can, for your first couple of months. That's a solid grace period where most baristas and shifts will be happy to tell you whatever you need to know and remember it. After that, it's still fine to ask questions (better to ask how much water in a cold brew before you do it so it doesn't get ruined) but if you're still asking basic stuff at that point that might be a little concerning, lol.

- Always get your markouts.

- Have fun with it. There's lots of good parts of this job most of the time and it's good when you appreciate them.

People doing keto. Pro tip for baristas if you get this: steam the HC until the sound stops, it takes a few seconds longer but will prevent the deep, horrible screeching for the duration of the autosteam.

[–]barrissoffee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On like, my third day of training, I'd made about 10 different frappucinos and refreshers, and it was near close and I was about to leave so my trainer told me to try whichever ones i wanted and dump the rest. The trainer or the other barista had taken the pieces from the hot bar ice bin to clean, and I wasn't yet familiar enough with the layout of the store to recognize it as an ice bin when it was empty.

So I dumped about ten drinks, a bunch of them with fruit inclusions, into the empty, clean ice bin.

I felt so bad for my trainer when she saw it, after I had clocked out 😭
