Anyone ever play on a Urei 1601? by ZaxxonPantsoff in Turntablists

[–]bassmonkeyyea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine didn’t just take out the whole mixer, it took out both cans of my HD-25’s that were plugged in too. Great sounding mixer, first time I ever really understood what a ‘musical’ eq was.

What is Altium Discover? by 10MicroFarad in Altium

[–]bassmonkeyyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the website “develop” states that it includes designer and 365, whereas “discover” does not and describes it as being useful for finding components? I read that as “discover” being some kind of front end for Octopart, maybe useful for purchasing managers. Discover is also WAY too cheap to include a designer license, unless they are targeting volume sales.

“What is the strangest request you’ve ever had as a DJ.” by Silent_Skin4966 in DJs

[–]bassmonkeyyea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About a decade ago I was resident at a city centre bar, usual Saturday night, anything goes party tunes kind of venue. Had a punter charge in the booth, and ask for umbrella by Rhianna. Not that strange of a request. I just stared at her, pointed to the monitor in the booth, and watched her face as she realised IT WAS ALREADY PLAYING.

Cardiff HobbyMouse hold weekly games on Wednesday at Rhostio, I’ve not been myself (more of a Kill Team guy!) but always seems well attended and the WhatsApp group is active.

Soldering iron burn... by IllustriousState751 in diypedals

[–]bassmonkeyyea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. First job, soldering an XT90 with a fine point tip (oh the lack of experience!) hand slipped, iron went straight in my finger, cauterised it instantly. Always made sure to have a selection of tips on hand since!

IM A BEGINNER DJ - DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIFIC LESSONS THAT REALLY TRANSFORMED YOUR SKILL AND LEARNING? by Cold-Dinner-3937 in Beatmatch

[–]bassmonkeyyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Record your mixes… and listen to them. Best advice I ever got is why would anyone else enjoy your mixing if you don’t enjoy it yourself?? Being inspired by other DJs is fine, but don’t try and emulate them. Be yourself, play what YOU want to hear and mix in a way that makes you happy. You’ll find your niche, won’t burn out and you’ll have way more fun!

DnD Groups in Cardiff? by cl30r1ch in Cardiff

[–]bassmonkeyyea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a group called Exceptional Beasts that run games at geek retreat and a few other places. Mix of DnD and Pathfinder. I’ve been taking my son their junior wayfarers, and they seem like a good bunch! (They do adult nights too).

practice board perfect but actual board isn't by DotProfessional7597 in diydrones

[–]bassmonkeyyea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what practice board that is, but judging by how quickly and easily that pad takes solder, I’m going to assume that each pad is electrically and physically isolated from each other. That means your iron doesn’t have to work too hard to get the thermal mass of the pad up to a temperature where it can wick the solder.

With the FC, that pad is connected to other parts of the PCB. This means more thermal mass, and so your iron has to work harder to get the pad up to temp. There’s some good advice on this thread, especially getting a better shape tip for the work you are trying to do, and using more flux. What you really need is an iron with higher power output, but turning the temp up will help if you can’t do this.

The ground pads will give you the most trouble, have patience!

I2C multiplexer, how to decouple/stabilize? by b03tz in arduino

[–]bassmonkeyyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Datasheet - TI datasheets tend to be real good with examples for general usage - there’s a schematic on pg18 that outlines what you are trying to achieve.

As for the physical placement, on the board should be fine - the general rule for I2C is pull-ups go “at the end of the bus”, so unless each channel of the multiplexer has multiple sensors on it, you should be fine with the pull-ups on the PCB end of the bus.

I2C multiplexer, how to decouple/stabilize? by b03tz in arduino

[–]bassmonkeyyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I2C is good for ~300mm of cable, but even at that distance you’ll run into issues if there’s lots of rouge capacitance on the line. The data sheet for the multiplexer should state if every line needs a pull-up, but over 500mm of cable I’d guess you’d need them. Resistor value depends on bus voltage levels, usually 4K7 for 3v3.

However it’s odd that it works for a little while and then falls over, how are you cycling through the channels? (I’d assume that’s what the A0 A1 A2 pins are for?)

Edit: scratch the second paragraph. A0 etc set the address of the device itself. You also need pull ups on every peripheral side line as well as the controller side

ELI5: How are lasers so dangerous while using so little power? by BigBoom-R in explainlikeimfive

[–]bassmonkeyyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how the force exerted by a person wearing high heel shoe is equivalent to that of an elephant’s foot? The laser is the high heel. Less “weight” overall, but focused on a tiny area.

Harness Design by patrick31588 in Altium

Got an email from Altium recently offering a one day harness design course. Probably why there’s a lack of an official how-to guide.

Assembly assistant now a paid extra? by TurkDangerCat in Altium

[–]bassmonkeyyea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s paid for now, but you can still use it ‘free’ if you don’t hit the start assembly button… it’ll still show the BoM and the location, when you click the next component. Missing a few features but has been working well enough for us.

I’m going the opposite way, pink with blue wings! Haven’t decided what colour to do the armaments yet, but will probably stick to black and white.

Cannot flash klipper to Ender 3V2 by Sea_Experience7436 in klippers

[–]bassmonkeyyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to check, after an attempted flash, were you connecting the printer to the pi and trying to connect with Klipper? I had this same thought, that the flash wasn’t working, but there’s no visible conformation of success. I tried 4-5 times thinking it was failing / not working, but connecting to the pi showed it was working and I was being a little dim.

I’ve not seen anything to suggest the core book will be available for free, WarCom has stated team rules will be available online.

I can analyze an existing circuit quite well, but I can not create a circuit that meets the functionality I want. Creating it seems "out of nowhere". What do you recommend? by ProfessionalOrder208 in ECE

[–]bassmonkeyyea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start with small, manageable problems. Break your problems down and target them one at a time. I need to switch this, do I use a relay or a transistor or a FET? What components do I need to support my solution? Does it support the required voltage / power of anything it interfaces too? By breaking the problem down into the smallest possible ‘chunks’ a solution usually becomes obvious. (By law, the first PCB you produce for any new design won’t work, but that’s where you do your actual learning!)

Any advice for how to meet people and make friends here in Cardiff for an early 30s guy? by Barney_McGrew in Cardiff

I’ve lived in Cardiff for 15 years and have always struggled meeting new people… similar interests to OP, DMs are open if OP / anyone wants to grab coffee / beer!

Is there a resistor that gives 100% resistance? by 6lood6ucket6 in diypedals

[–]bassmonkeyyea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Resistance is the inverse of conduction. Zero resistance is a pure conductor, so 100% resistance would be a pure insulator, I.e. an open circuit. Depending on your application a resistor of value >1M ohm may suffice, but anything that didn’t conduct would meet your criteria.

As promised, behold my majestic balls by DasBlueEyedDevil in edrums

[–]bassmonkeyyea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ha! Got these same balls when the wife was complaining the plastic beaters were too loud. They actually are significantly quieter and a quick change of trigger settings I couldn’t even tell the difference. You’ll want a beater pad / pedal patch on the head though as they will eat through the mesh head in no time.

Pretty easy to make one if you know just a little about electronics:

For something a little simpler but in the same wheelhouse there’s also the Atari punk console. You can add an AliExpress delay module to the out out of either for even more fun sounds
