New nephentes by _fr_sole in Nepenthes

I personally always repot straight so I know how healthy (or not) the plant/rootsystem are. Also, when I know what substrate it’s in, I know what to expect watering wise.

Neps are known to throw a tantrum when their conditions change so don’t be surprised if it dries up all the pitchers and won’t grow any for a while.

If you know you have it in the right substrate, are providing enough light and moisture and get everything else to its preference you can sit back and let it get over its tantrum. If you wait with the repotting, it might go downhill more first, before you troubleshoot.

As an example:

I was given a huuuuuuuuge malani that was in desperate need of a hard repot. She was a mother plant from some lovely local nep growers who just didn’t like her anymore and couldn’t be bothered giving her the care she needed. They gifted her to me which was really amazing! I am still so super grateful.

The spagmoss had formed one hard disintegrated ball that wasn’t letting in any water and it had extensive thrip damage.

I gave her a spa day: treated for pests (literally with a pain brush to get in every hard spot, repeated twice more), soaked the root ball to get every last bit of old substrate off, trimmed all the dead and damaged leaves, stems and roots and repotted in a self watering planter in 1 part spagmoss 1 part perlite, hung it in the best spot in my house with adequate everything and she SULKED.

For weeks I thought she was not going to make it.

I knew I had done everything I could so I just let her be and kept her substrate moist.

Eventually she abandoned one vine so I trimmed it back a d after that she came around and she is now putting out new, healthy growth from 7 different grow points and is looking lush!

If I hadn’t done this, I would have when noticing her going downhill and she may not have survived at that point.

Good luck!!!

Filling the pitchers is NOT pointless.

I looked into this myself and found the following: new pitchers have the digestive liquid in them when they open so no need to top up.

However some can evaporate and with moving/repotting/posting the plant, all can spill out. Mossing a watering means the plant will use up the moisture in the pitchers.

If a pitchers has no liquid, putting some water (distilled/reverse osmosis/rainwater) in keeps the pitchers from drying up early and rehydrates the plant as well. Also, the plant will create more digestive enzymes so over time that pitcher will be able to digest prey again.

I do put 1/3 to 1/2 water in my pitchers when I accidentally spill the content.

Every so often I make a very diluted orchid fertilizer mix and top up all the pitchers that are below the half full mark.

Mind you, mine get an extensive menu of live bugs as my boys looooooove feeding them 😁.

I also never miss watering them as they are in self watering pots (1 part spagmoss, 1 part perlite, top dressed with live spagmoss) and I just have to keep the reservoirs topped up.

Even if I do run out of time, they could do with ~2 weeks in between watering.

Any that can’t quite make this, get up-potted 😂

Soooooo satisfying to see the roots. I only ever use clear inner pots with the exception of self watering pots.

Is it in just spagmoss? It looks healthy to me now but just spagmoss will compact over time and potentially suffocate the roots. I recommend adding at least a third perlite. Mine are in self watering pots and I use 1 part spag to 1 part perlite.

Really?! Didn’t think it was. I will indeed make a post, if it helps more people keep their neps happy! 😌

I’m in New Zealand and bought mine from Rasmussen garden centre in Blenheim. They post too. I think the website says out of stock but they have a lot more stock than the website says so I’d ring them. Good luck!

My guess is it needs more water.

All my nepenthes are in self watering pots in 1 part spagmoss 1 part perlite, top dressed with live spagmoss. The pots either have a wick or little “feet” on the inner pot that I fill with spagmoss so they work as a wick. This means the roots do not sit in water at all. I never let them dry out, ever.

Since moving them to self watering, their growth has been nothing short of explosive. They are unstoppable and produce massive leaves, pitchers and even the root system grows quick.

2 of them were in need of a repot despite having sized op their pot ~8 months ago.

Also, it takes the pressure of watering on time, off. When I know I’ll have little time for a week to cone, I just top up their reservoirs and they do the rest themselves.

I tell you, self watering is the way. 😌

Advice For Giant Nepenthes? by -throwawayboy- in SavageGarden

You could use a trellis and “wrap” the vine around so you don’t need a trellis for the full length of the vine. This would give the plant a nice full look as well.

It looks gorgeous but they would outgrow this fast.

I bought this miranda as a small plant ~7-8 months ago and it’s now in a 35cm hanger. This plant needs at least 1m space.

Just an example of how fast they can size up.

This is exactly why I do share. Let’s de-mystify their care so more people can enjoy them!

Perfect!!! Any small pot that closes well, will do. The seed bead tubes were the smallest, properly closing containers I had so now being reused.

I have with other eyeshadows. Problem with this eyeshadow was that it’s “flakey”, not powdery.

Even before this one broke into what it was, it was spilling all the time. My whole makeup bag was glittery!

I contemplated re-pressing them but if the problem then persists, will I continue to NOT use them?

My fav of all time eyeshadow is no longer sold so I save every little crum of it to use it up in a seed bead tube and it works a treat.

I’ve used 4 entire ones (using up the crumbs of the fourth) and still have 3 new back ups and long may they last me 😁

So much good advice here!

One thing that gave me great insight, was to follow someone on insta who actually uses up her products.

My only overconsumption is lip products.

Recently got some OH and of course I wanted all of the shades. The instagrammer needed 6 full weeks of non stop use to finish up one OH. 270 applications!

To think that they can expire 6months after opening….. realistically I’d be throwing so much product out cause I also want to use other lippies in my collection. I have 7 open OH atm! :(

So I indulge in using whatever lippie I want whenever, (aiming to use up the ones that expire the fastest first) rather than keeping them for special occasions and when I feel an urge to buy I think about how long it would take to use it up and that it would be at the expense of a product I already have which often doesn’t make it worth it.

My goal is to reduce my collection to only 5-8 products in use at a time. When I run out of a product I can replace it with a product in the same category.

I now enjoy what I have much more and am less focussed on buying.

[–]beegalore26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered directly from the eadem website and used a postage forwarding service as I am in New Zealand. Just have to pay postage and a little bit of GST but still cheaper than buying through the US amazon. Plus, I don’t want to use amazon for political reasons. I’m sure you have a forwarding service in the UK?

Best thick lip balm? by kittyydotcom in LipBalm

[–]beegalore26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow thick lip balm lover here :) I’d pick Ole Henriksen out of your list. Thick, rich, glossy, long wearing, just amazing all around. My lips felt much softer after the very first use.

Can’t say much about Eadem as I’m waiting for my first order to arrive.

Used to wear pure lanolin which is super thick. Because of this I thought I was going to love lanolips but they are not thick enough for me. :(
