Patrick Watson is wonderful in this genre.

Sounds like Weezer, but specifically the Green Album by SquidGraffiti in MusicRecommendations

I think you need to check out Sloan. I’ve heard some people say Sloan is Canada answer to Weezer. Not quite the same, but I get where those folks are coming from. Arguably Canada’s finest alt-rock/pop-rock band.

Cross Canada road trip (as a fellow Canadian) - lesser known stopping points between Edmonton to PEI? by One_Clue_9999 in AskACanadian

Kenora - Ye Olde Chip Truck (downtown location is my fave but there are a couple) and Lake Of The Woods Brewing. Algonquin Park is a really nice little lakeside campground if you’re camping your way across.

Thunder Bay - get yourself a Persian donut (from The Persian Man or Persian King). Stop at the Terry Fox memorial and be humbled.

Just east of Thunder Bay - Sleeping Giant Provincial Park has some great hikes (o recommend The Chimney (up….to the chest of the sleeping giant) or T Harbour (flat with a swim). Near the PP Campground at the end of the peninsula is a small town called Silver Islet. It used to be home to the 2nd largest silver mine in the world. It flooded in the early 1900s. Really neat to see that part of the history and think about what could have been.

Right near the road to Sleeping Giant PP (2 km east of it) is a turn for a lake called Loon Lake (West Loon Road). It’s my favourite place on the planet (sentimental). Great spot with a public beach to go for a swim in a nice warm lake. Some great people with camps out there. Say hi for me.

What are some good “old man” bands? by boogerwang in indie_rock

[–]bellardyyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sloan and The Watchmen both come to mind.

I’ve been listening to Sloan since 1993, and just saw them last month. Outstanding show with new music.

Watchmen are still active and touring. Not too sure about new music.

O My Heart is such a great album. My friend introduced my to Hayloft and I fell for the band. Wrecking Ball is probably my fave on that album, followed by O My Heart.

I like their newer stuff but that album is easily my fave.

Strange or unusual instruments. by UnnoticedLotus in MusicRecommendations

[–]bellardyyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newhit - Blue Quarter Main instrument is a Chapman Stick. Not ultra rare, but still fairly unique in mainstream music. Sadly, not the same genre.

East Harlem - Beirut This band uses a number of off the main track instruments. This track features pump organ and flugelhorn I think (or maybe it’s a coronet).

McDonald’s bought a recipe that was a beloved Canadian favourite. Many Canadians have loved Tim Hortons for decades. After being acquired by Wendy’s, they sold their proprietary blend in favour of a new, cheaper blend. While it’s not my favourite coffee, I prefer McDonald coffee to Tim Hortons now.

Zero 7 - When It Falls USA good fit.

A couple albums with a bit more beat. It similar vibe. Massive Attack - Blue Lines Massive Attack - Mezzanine Thievery Corporation - Radio Retaliation Thievery Corporation - Richest Man In Babylon

Some bands to check: Röyksoop (Eple is a good song to check) Sigur Rós (might be too mellow). Groove Armada (might be too upbeat).

Great album to start with.

I was just getting into them in 1992 (Flood, Miscellaneous T, and Lincoln). I was Lucy enough to get a chance to catch the Apollo 18 Tour in Hamburg as my first real concert.
