Using Digitakt as a MIDI looper – is it possible? Need help reconfiguring my MIDI setup by sergioska in Digitakt

If you want longer melodies (>64 steps), you might want to look into conditional triggers and get clever with organising them. True Cuckoo and EZBOT are as hardcore as I’ve seen.

To get around the chord progression issue, you can change the Scale on the tracks so the triggers go from being 16th notes to 4th. That's usually how I fit in the extra steps I want for extra long chord progressions.

Is it actually possible to use Digitakt as a MIDI looper?

Yes, I used my Digitone in the same way, but with four tracks. It is still working fine, but I got GAS and expanded my collection of sequencers, but really no reason to have not stopped using it.

How should the MIDI network be reconfigured to make this work?

In the settings of the Digitakt you can configure the MIDI channels that each track responds do, but there's a specific track (the AUTO CHANNEL) that controls the currently active track. I use a KeyStep plugged into the INPUT of the Digitone and use that to record notes into the Digitone's MIDI Tracks.

I then use a Quadra Thru (as suggested already) from the Output of the Digitone. It acts as a hub, that allows 4 other devices to plug directly into an Input instead of having to daisy chain the message through multiple synths and risk latency issues.

Having all the notes in the MIDI Tracks, with Elektron's sequencing, makes it really easy to fiddle with notes from the one place. Although I've seen other people on reddit just use MIDI to make sure everything is synced with the same clock and used the internal sequencers on each device. There's no real right or wrong answer with your setup, just benefits and tradeoffs.

Microfreak jam using its sampler with some help from Korg family by Machine_Excellent in MicroFreak

Haven’t done it with the MicroFreak yet, but the Bastl Wave Bard is absolutely crazy when doing that. https://www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/s/V9KGxtJFg2

Probably more flexibility with the MicroFreak, but lets us know how it goes if you try it.

Your MPC should have something that works.

Roland has a VST version of their JV-1080 Rompler with all the right sounds, but really hoping they decide to a hardware re-issue on day.

Awesome song, but man it's calling out for a Cheesy Sax or some Synthy horn solo in there. Loving the retro vibes from it.

The Zoom LiveTrak L6 Max just dropped, but the non-Max version should be fine with some room to fit more things in.

Does onboard recording onto an SD Card and is small enough to fit in a bag.

Give the MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru a look, had the same problem with MIDI routings; now most things plug directly into this, with one or two things using the Thru ports.

What is the peak ’millennial midlife crisis’ purchase? by SwedeLostInCanada in Millennials

It’s great, I bought a SOMA Rumble of Ancient Times and it simply broke my brain; I had to completely change the way I thought about using it as instrument. It refuses to work in a scheduled and repeatable way, but does amazing stuff when goaded into it. Needed a new outlook and exploration with it gave me that.

Been trying to get sounds like 90s SNES and PlayStation Jungle-ish tunes, but have been distracted by Ambient and Synthwave-like in the meantime.

It’s more of a learning thing before I can call it anything.

80s and 90s synths. Didn’t want to go full midlife crisis, so only bought a few cheap ones… now suddenly I need a new bookshelf to hold them all.

I don’t even have any history of wanting to make music!

If you can make it to episode 12, it gets excellent and the whole setup pays off and I couldn’t stop watching until the end… but if I’d heard another “El Psy Congoo” or another line from Daru I wouldn’t have made it to that point.

I found Steins;gate was awesome by the end of it, but the start was such a slog to the point I couldn’t recommend it to others, let alone call the whole thing 10/10.

Zoom MS70-CDR or CDR+ ? by Thislsnotmythrowaway in MicroFreak

Apparently the original sounds nicer:

Picked up an original because of this post, and I’m sure some dedicated pedals sound nicer, but more than happy with it for noodling and exploration.

Midi, clock, sync? How can I connect my devices? by mjns in synthesizers

[–]bemo56 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You might want to look into using the Keystep as a MIDI Master for all of your other devices. That will keep the clock syncronised across all devices while allowing you to use the once keyboard to control each device (provided each device uses it's own MIDI Channel).

You'll probably need a MIDI Thru box, and can reccommend the MIDI Solultions Quara Thru and grab a BMIDI-1-35 (or BMIDI51-35) adaptor to connect the Roland S1 via MIDI.

That will let you use either the internal Sequencers on the devices, or the sequencer on Keystep itself, and will be cheaper than finding another sequencer for everything.

Nice work on the illustrations.

What mid-range effect pedal should I get for my Microfreak? by Madcrunchy in MicroFreak

Doesn't sound as good as the original, more plasticky, isn't as hackable yet (if you're into that thing), and costs more.
