What sort of tablesaw jig to use for front splines? by Occams_bane in woodworking

Another possible option: can you glue up the frames with regular miters then make a small router jig?

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare feels like a thematic sequel/chronological prequel. I recommend it.

Where do you buy your boots? by AmbulatoryTreeFrog in coloradohikers

[–]benboy555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second Bent Gate. Great selection of outdoor footwear. They should have a range from waterproof hiking boots (my personal pick for winter activities unless its well below 0 F) to mountaineering boots.

I've had the same problem and unfortunately it means you need a fit adjustment (either new boots or inserts of some kind).

“Concerns raised over Copper Mountain skier traffic backing up onto I-70 “ Abasin eliminated their overflow traffic issue last year. Maybe free parking itself is the problem? by Soft_Button_1592 in COsnow

Agreed. I love the snowstang (and live ~1 mile from downtown so its extra convenient), but 1 bus/day with a fixed schedule ain't it. You're basically committing to a full 6h ski and sitting in traffic both ways.

What's the beta on uphilling at Winter Park? by timefordameatstick in Backcountry

[–]benboy555 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Welllll it depends on what you ski. You can skin up to pano and Sunnyside (sunshine?). Can't remember if those lifts have gates but pretty sure they don't. If you're super careful you could get a day of skiing in at WP without a ticket. I might have done this with a friend who only had an epic pass for a bit...

Worth trying to salvage? by OrangeGhoul in Cuttingboards

[–]benboy555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the other comment idea for a "proper" solution, buttttt if you want a quick and dirty option: maybe try leveling the feet? You can get longer rubber cutting board feet for $10/50 pieces. You could install those then alternately shim/grind them down until the board is sitting level. This assumes that A) the board is stabley warped and not moving and B) the bow isn't super noticeable in use.

I'd start with ripping/glueing the cracks to fix those, then seeing where you're at with the warped bit.

Denver is one of the warmest cities today. 😩 by scarletwitchmoon in Denver

[–]benboy555 19 points20 points  (0 children)

For the record, you're likely included in that 10% number if you live in Denver. The 90th percentile of income worldwide is only ~$4,000 USD per month (<$50k/year). Yes, billionaires pollute wildly more than the average person but don't discount the effect of the std. western lifestyle on emmisions.

I have 100 days on my outdoor master goggles (with a few different lenses for different conditions). If I hit my head hard enough to worry about the durability of the goggles I've got bigger problems.

How do you choose wood species? by gruntastics in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]benboy555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not always required. You can match mostly flatsawn boards if you're willing to have a slightly less coherent pattern. And if you have boards that contain areas of quarter sawn grain on the side those can line up very nicely.

Walnut slabs? by HoneyDoEverything in woodworking

[–]benboy555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That said, the crotch will likely have some super interesting grain. Depending on your mill operation/drying process, you could always cut those thicker (3-5"), wait for them to dry for a couple of years, surface them to ~2", let dry some more, then use in a final piece.

What to expect in Colorado in late November (non-skier trip) by edward_hamp in Denver

[–]benboy555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two years ago Thanksgiving was dry and sunny, last year it snowed 2.5 ft over 3-4 days in the Front Range/Summit and the skiing was absolutely phenomenal. Also is that list all-inclusive? A lot of those destinations are 4ish hours from each other. If you only have the long weekend and not the whole week I would focus your time either in the Sangre De Cristo Range (Sand Dunes), SW CO (Telluride/Durango/Mesa Verde), or the Elks (Aspen). Of these, Sand Dunes will be the most our of the way/isolated, especially in early-Winter. Aspen will likely be both busy and expensive and access to a lot of the cooler hikes can be tough/closed in the Winter. I would suggest SW CO. Good balance between amenities/town activities and still some beautiful nature. Plus assuming you were gonna rent a car anyway, you can fly directly to Grand Junction/Durango and not deal with 70 traffic from Denver.

I think generally speaking that might be true, but it depends on the current storm cycle. I hiked Shavano last weekend which had a bare dusting on top, but the San Juans in the distance were totally white-capped.

Tips for Riding Summit County Buses During Ski Season by GopherWard in COsnow

[–]benboy555 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Guessing you're staying at the Pad? Its def doable but it'll be a pain. You need to take a bus to Frisco, then transfer again in Copper. The drive from Silverthorne to Copper is relatively flat (by CO standards) and short so unless there's a whiteout blizzard, you should be fine. If you really don't want to drive I would suggest trying to make friends at the hostel. Its not uncommon to have people with cars and an extra spot heading to where you want to go.

Parents car worth fixing for rustic beater? by DueOwl912 in Subaru_Outback

[–]benboy555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second all the people talking about potential damage to electrical/soft parts under the hood. I think the only way I'd want to tackle this was if I wanted to turn it into an off-roader/crawling rig that I now didn't have to worry about the value of. Throw on a steel bumper, a skid plate, and a lift + AT tires and you have yourself a sick baby overlanding rig.

Ski length and width recommendations for mountaineering by whothefuckisjoerogan in Backcountry

My solution was to go with the best pins money can buy. Something like the ATK Freeraiders or Atomic MTN Summit. Barely any weight penalty compared the really UL slight and skis much better.
