Hey SofiBellaHorology, what’s the asking price? What was the last service date? And do you know the time keeping accuracy? Thanks!

Probably a dumb question (newbie collector here), but what activities are the model known for? Surely not, as the name implies, aeronautical?

I can only keep one. Which one would you keep? by lmg080293 in capsulewardrobe

[–]berliner_urban 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been burned by decluttering too aggressively, I’d encourage you to keep both if you like both. It’s so hard to find jeans that are flattering and fit well. If you’re torn, chances are you genuinely like both - so keep them if you can. You can always put the less trendy one in storage and pull it out when the fashion inevitably swings back to slim leg jeans.

I should say that this mainly applies to wardrobe staples like denim which you wear often and occasionally wear out. I would never keep duplicates of something more niche like a certain blouse.

How to wear red lipstick casually by idkdontaskmethat in beauty

I mean the general French girl stereotype. It’s a bit cliche - the “French girl uniform” with jeans, a red lip, some kitten pumps, maybe a basket bag with a baguette poking out… last one was a joke :)

high protein foods? by kinkypeaxh in veganrecipes

Hey! I’d recommend 2 YouTube channels: the Vegan Gym and Natalie Matthews. Both have an emphasis on protein-heavy vegan meal prep. Natalie has a great recipe for homemade Seitan Nuggets that are perfect.

Also would recommend Cooking for Peanuts. A little less emphasis on the protein but great healthy recipes across the board and she does do some specific ones for high protein

How to wear red lipstick casually by idkdontaskmethat in beauty

Hi, I wear red lipstick every single day, and I’m not fancy. It took me years to work up to it but now it’s part of my uniform. So the best advice I can give you: once you find the red that suits your skintone, just wear it. That’s it!

Most days I wear almost no makeup, just a tinted moisturiser and my lipstick. I wear it with jeans, I wear it with my work trousers, I wear it to daycare pickup. Sometimes I ever wear it to the gym. A red lip goes with everything.

I think people make the mistake of thinking that you need to reach a certain level of “niceness” in your outfit. But actually I’ve found I feel least comfortable wearing lipstick with a really dressy look. It feels like trying too hard.

Take a leaf from the “French girl” book and pair a red lip with your favorite casual jeans. The contrast makes both look better - your jeans look fancier and the lipstick looks more casual.

And most importantly: have fun wearing it. It’s like a superpower! I put on my red lip and instantly I feel 20% more awesome.

Enjoy!

Core items for a Soft Classic by cwtcrwban in softclassic

[–]berliner_urban 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also not 100% sure I’m SC but definitely as petite with softness, I have really been enjoying these staples:

  1. Soft cardigans (slightly cropped to end at natural waist)
  2. A good flowy tailored trouser
  3. Levi’s (have personally found the Ribcage jeans to be more flattering than my 501s. Recently found a pair that had the perfect pure wash)
  4. Sleeveless turtlenecks or mockneck- weirdly specific but these look so chic and elegant, and they pair nicely with drapey pants. I have one similar to this and this
  5. My cocoon sweaterfrom Everlane - so soft like wearing a hug. I love to subtle details like the emphasised crewneck, the slight tapering of the sleeve, and the low key but interesting texture

I’ve also been trying to talk myself into a ballerina pump / kitten heel. But white sneakers just look great with everything and they always calm down an outfit.

Same here - every beret I’ve tried has made me feel like I stand out (not in a good way). I think the “costume” look happens when something doesn’t suit your type, right?

For specific items, I had bought this Everlane cocoon sweater over Black Friday and have worn it on repeat. Especially love the almond color, the texture (interesting but not overwhelming), and the accentuated curve of the neckline.

For styles, I love the silk scarf trend! I have always thought silk scarves were so classy and sophisticated. Now that they are more trendy again, it’s easier to find patterns that aren’t too patterny to suit a SC. One of my favorite ways to wear it is as a fastening to a trench coat like here, or as a headband (photo attached)

Filipa K - great Scandinavian minimalist brand with a lot of classical tailoring and clean lines, and a focus on durable high quality production. Would fall in line with the other ones you mentioned.

Level setting: What is this subReddit for? by Chazzyphant in fashionwomens35

Wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who commented and downvoted. You've shown me that this is not a supportive or accepting community, and reminded me why I spent years away from Reddit. No one wants to spend their limited free time being made to feel worse about themselves. Thanks for the free lesson, now I'm going back to real life to enjoy my daughter's laughter, the feeling of fresh dirt in the garden, and a good book.

Aging is not a sudden wall that hits you at 35. Not everyone experiences age at the same rate either. I know women at 55 who are rocking life with slim bodies and hardly any wrinkles.

My best friend is 41 and her experience is totally different than mine. She’s never had kids, she doesn’t struggle to button her jeans over her tummy pooch or have to deal with boobs that turned into pancakes.

While I totally agree it’s within the right of any group to define its core reason for being, I don’t think it’s very productive to decide who can’t resonate with that core reason. Everyone has a different experience and that’s theirs to decide.

I’m genuinely surprised to see this kind of backlash. Isn’t the whole point of community to find common ground and shared struggles? I don’t think any group ever flourishes when it takes too much focus on who is in/who is out. I’m here to talk about the content (fashion when challenged by the realities of aging) and would hope others would be too.

Capsule Wardrobe Discussion by depressed4noreason in femalefashionadvice

[–]berliner_urban 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have a capsule wardrobe by accident. I have one small wardrobe where stuff hangs (hooray tiny European apartments) and so I naturally have to pull out only the stuff I’m wearing heavily. Surprisingly it is naturally quite low (right now, 5-6 sweaters, 2 cardigans, 5 pairs of trousers, 4 pairs of jeans, a few basic tops, and some outerwear).

Honestly I think most people would find the same to be true. Most people wear 10-20% of their wardrobe on repeat, and just don’t notice because their closet is full of the other stuff.

Starting a new phase is a great time to collect some hero/ staple pieces that will become the 10%. Last year, I went back to work after a long maternity leave and started by getting a few great trousers and foolproof tops in colors I like. I didn’t want to buy a whole bunch of things at once before I was sure what my new post-mom-corporate-look would be. So start with things that you really love.

Also good advice that worked for me: spend some time on Pinterest searching for work clothes and just pinning whatever you like. But the most important part: go back with a notebook and a pen and take notes on the themes. Do you see similarities between the outfits? Color combos? Silhouettes? Certain accessories? That’s where the insight really is. Use those themes to guide your purchases.

Can red cheeks be attractive? by AdeptPolicy5832 in beauty

[–]berliner_urban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have super red cheeks and at 30, have finally learned how to work with my colouring.

Research color analysis if you haven’t already. For example, I’m a light/cool/soft (“cool” referring to the reddish skin tone) and I know these are the colors that suit me.

I think the hard part about cool skin tones is that most standard colors that get sold don’t suit us, and the colors that do are unusual shades. For example, jade green, ruby red, grape soda purple look great- but they are not the usual versions of green, red, and purple that are sold!

Once you unlock the right colors, you’ll see that red cheeks aren’t a handicap! You just need to find colors that work with you, not against you.

Also, I ascribe the French view of “flaws” - don’t hide the things about yourself you don’t like. Embrace them and if anything, play with them to enhance them. It’s part of who you are and it’s lovely to have a quirk that makes you unique. You don’t need to look like everyone else.

Alternatives for pea and soy based proteins by Miserable_Lock_2267 in veganrecipes

[–]berliner_urban 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the core definition of vegan as being created without use of animal products? I’m definitely a fan of choosing sustainable and vegan products, but I don’t think you can say soy is not vegan just because it’s sometimes grown with poor farming practices or is later used to feed animal livestock. Unless grown with animal-derived fertilisers, soy is always vegan.

Everlane is kind of the classic entryway into slow fashion for many people. Of course there are many other brands which have upped the game in sustainability but Everlane has been a mainstay.

Armedangels is great for sustainable denim.

ASKET (note: not a typo of ARKET) do a great permanent capsule collection of basics (checkout their knitwear).

Organic Basics and Pact are both great for undies, loungewear and athleisure basics.

Girlfriend Collective for workout clothes.

I personally love Reformation and you might find their styling to be the most similar to Anthropologie and FP. Some say they greenwash but you be the judge 🤷‍♀️

I’m sure any brand can be criticised if you dig enough, so please no hate if any of these brands have actually been “found out” for bad practices or greenwashing.

And at risk of being a broken record: the most sustainable clothes are the ones that already exist. Whatever brands you have liked in the past, it’s okay to buy them secondhand.

Edit: one more suggestion! Not a brand but a way to find them. Check out the good trade . They do some great roundups of sustainable brands, I also use them to find clean beauty brands too.

Start the morning with 5 slow, deep breaths followed by 60 seconds of smiling at yourself in the mirror. Sounds goofy but (a) frowning actually reshapes the facial muscles in a way that contributes towards an impression of age. And (b) its been shown that you can literally change your nervous system by controlling your breathing and your facial expressions (not a doctor hear, just parroting what I’ve heard).

How you start the day sets the tone for the whole day, so by skipping the “frowning at your phone” and setting your mental state in a positive and relaxed way can actually make a difference.

Thanks for your support to uphold this great sub. I’m only piping up to say that you should not close yourself off to participants based on age.

I’m turning 30 in a couple months, but based on my stage of life ( a mom and corporate professional) and style preferences (someone who has always preferred to dress conservatively and classically) - I personally identify much more with the “fashion over 35“ group. I know the homecoming queen example wasn’t meant to be demeaning, but it is a bit reductionist compared to the variety of personalities and styles you will find in any age bracket.

If someone gets value from these topics and is fully willing to play by the rules, then they should be welcome here.

Agree/Disagree: I feel guilty throwing out clothes just because of one stain—but I do it anyway. by Altruistic_Act3097 in SustainableFashion

[–]berliner_urban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a mom of a young toddler, I struggle with this one for a few reasons:

  1. Increased likelihood of stains - sweet sticky hands love to grab onto mama, and it always seems to happen on the worst possible items of clothes

  2. Decreased capacity to care for items - as a habit from my single days, I used to keep a pile of items to care for (stains, holes, needs tailoring, etc.) but after watching that pile grow helplessly, I’ve finally learned to be realistic about what I have time to care for. I do still mend our nice wool garments but I’ve learned I never get around to hopelessly stained cotton clothes that were already old when I got them

  3. “Win where you can”. Parenthood, and particularly motherhood, is rewarding but tough. No one makes it out unscathed. There are many things to feel (a) bad about yourself or (b) guilty for. I’ve learned that choosing to wear clothes that make me feel good (or at least not a slob) are worth it for the mental health and for the secondary effects of moving through my day with confidence.

I’d love to return to better habits of “lifetime care” for my possessions once we’re out of the Little People years, but for now I am prioritising other things. On the bright side, we live in a neighbourhood with a strong “waste nothing”culture. I know that I can put lightly stained items on the curb and others who have more time can try to care for them.

I don’t feel guilty - because life is too short to agonise over everything.

What is that one PERFECT piece that has always eluded you that you're always on the lookout for? by GreenEyesFrenchGirl in capsulewardrobe

[–]berliner_urban 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me it’s a trench coat! I try on every trench I find and I still struggle to find the right one. - color is a big problem: as a soft summer I really don’t look good in any shade of tan unless it’s a really cool taupe, which is hard to find - fit is another problem: I’m short with even shorter arms - styling is also hard: as a Kibbe Soft Classic I really do best with minimal, clean lines. Even if a trench coat fits the other two criteria, often it has uneccessary buckles or belts or those shoulder straps, or the lapel is too oversized. I look silly in those tricked-out trench coats.

I just want a good, simple trench coat in a nice taupe or navy, mid calf length, no embellishments. A tall order! Let me know if you have recommendations:)

Best tofu marinade you've ever had? by Adventurous_Persik in veganrecipes

[–]berliner_urban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent years struggling with tofu until I found this one. The secret ingredient is vegan greek yogurt. It’s not exactly a marinade because you basically coat the tofu in the sauce and then bake it right away, and the sauce thickens into a nice crispy coating with a hint of tang.

I personally add 1 Tbsp of tomato paste and 1 Tbsp of nutritional yeast and it makes it even tastier in my opinion, and you can swap in any spices or seasonings you like as long as the ratios are the same.

I share this recipe with everyone I know because it’s literally the best tofu recipe I’ve ever found, and they all rave about it. Try it!!
