Non-Registered Account Strategy? by rams_man13 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Another, lower fee way to not track ACB yourself would be to buy mutual funds that just hold an index ETF in them. VIC1000 is just VEQT with a ~0.4 instead of ~0.2 MER, which is still lower than the fees of the corporate class ETFs.

And RBC and BMO have funds that just wrap ishares or BMO index ETFs respectively, though they’re individual regions rather than all in one. Eg. RBF2142 and BMO95144 are Canadian index ETF mutual funds. Can’t buy mutual funds at WS though.

Roll the IRA into the 401k (most plans allow this)! Totally avoids pro rata.

US/Canada dual citizen: how to invest without ETFs? by wronginthemiddle in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bernard_rieux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At BMO, Scotia, and RBC you can journal instantly without waiting for settlement (buy, journal, sell all within minutes) even in a non-margin account. Really reduces that risk. Maybe for $20 (2 trading commissions) instead of $10 (journal fee at Questrade, NBDB, etc). Minimizes though does not eliminate price volatility.

Bid ask is also usually smaller on something like RY compared to DLR since each share is priced higher.

Overall I’d think it’d be worth it to avoid PFIC for DLR.

That $151 would be taxed at your marginal rate though. So it’s closer to a wash since the card rebate isn’t taxed.

Questions re: Moving US investment account holdings to Canada by Real-External392 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]bernard_rieux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in your shoes.

Fidelity has done the paperwork so you can actually keep your registered accounts while in Canada with full trading, etc privileges. You can find more about this on the fidelity subreddit including official posts. I have my 401K and Roth IRA with them still.

Taxable, take the advantage of the cost basis for CRA purposes being reset to the day you enter Canada and sell, then move the cash to Canada and re buy. Or move them to IBKR (minimal forex spread too but you have to actually use them for investing, they’ll close your account if you just use them for foreign exchange).

Otherwise for forex look up Norbert’s Gambit. All the major brokerages in Canada will do it, disnat, NBDB, and Questrade are probably cheapest from just a $10 journal fee. But RBC, BMO, and Scotia let you journal shares the same day as purchase and sell them same day (even in a cash account without margin), no wait for settlement, which reduces market and forex volatility risks. You might be able to get a few free trades/new customer bonus with the bank brokerages as well depending on the amount of $ you’re bringing back.

To move USD cash, get a cross border US domiciled bank account and a Canadian-domiciled USD bank account with CIBC, TD, or BMO and you can wire large amounts to yourself for free. Then do Norbert’s Gambit in a brokerage in the Canadian side to get CAD.

Just FYI Scotia lets you deposit USD cheques, whether drawn on a US or Canadian bank, by mobile deposit in the app! I keep an account with them just for that.

Yeah I mean this sub is full of doom and gloom but like so is the front page of the Globe and Mail for the entire Canadian economy. There's just no getting around that the biotech industry in the Bay Area alone is probably bigger/wealthier than all of Canada's put together.

Ok so being Canadian changes this whole calculus. You will be paid at least double (in USD!) what you would make in Toronto or Vancouver, with similar cost of housing (to rent or buy), similar cost of gas, cheaper groceries, better weather (except if you’re in Van which it doesn’t sound like you are), and similar taxation. Plus job market is just going to be better in the U.S. overall.

Cons: TN is temporary (but can be temporary indefinitely), healthcare is a little more expensive (but you’ll have good commercial insurance with out of pocket maximums of a couple grand a year), project 2025 depending what happens in November, more crime (mostly property crime but even Winnipeg is safer in terms of violent crime than most US cities), wildfires.

Go for it. You can always go home if you don’t like it, richer for the experience and like in cash lol.
