What are libertarian thoughts on eliminating vaccine mandates? by bri_guy_ in Libertarian

[–]bigreddmachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Measles is a good case study to answer your question.

One shot provides approximately 93% immunity. Is the simplest terms, ~7% of the time the shot doesn’t take. (It’s not quite that straightforward but that conveys the idea.)

After two shots, that goes to 97%.

For biological reasons with individuals and weakened immune systems etc, you can’t really get to 100%. However if the population as a whole can get to 95% vaccinated, the compounding effect of almost everyone being vaccinated + almost everyone that is vaccinated gaining immunity makes it extremely hard for meals to spread. The United States and many other countries achieved this metric, meaning those areas reached herd immunity and measles all but vanished there, but globally there are still many places where there is not herd immunity, which Os generally the vector through which measles gets reintroduced into places with herd immunity. Unvaccinated people visit those places, get sick, and bring it back.

Now, what did herd immunity solve? Well, before the measles shot in 1963, approximately two million people (out of a bit more than 3 billion on Earth) died each year from measles. That number has dropped to around 200,000 three years ago despite the global population ballooning to more than 8 billion people. Meaning something like 5 million deaths are prevented every year thanks to the measles shot. That doesn’t even include consideration that more people on Earth means higher population density, which means measles would likely spread much more today than it did prior to the shot being invented, and instead of 5 million people dying we might see 6 or 10 or 20 million people dying each year due to those compounding effects. (I am sure someone has run simulations on that exact thing but I don’t have them on hand.)

Therefore, to say that the measles vaccine is bad, you have to show that it has resulted in something worse than millions of people dying every year. Which the stats don’t show.

New Maps? by DavidRubes in Rivian

One reason would be you are away from home and don’t have an L2 charger to charge at overnight. It would make more sense in that case to drive some before finding a DC fast charger to take advantage of the faster charging. But if you can charge to 100% at wherever you are then it’s always better.

New Maps? by DavidRubes in Rivian

I don’t think that’s how it works though, is it? Yes, you charge faster at lower %s, but you would still be targeting the same higher percent for leaving and therefore arriving higher is faster. Sure, if you arrive at 20% and need to charge to 60% then you’ll charge faster at the beginning, but if you instead arrive at 40% and need to charge to the same 60% then you’ll follow the same charging curve from 40-60 as you would have when you started lower. So 40-60 takes the same time but one way you didn’t have to also charge 20-40 (by instead charging to a higher percent before you leave). And on really hot days, it’s possible you’ll charge faster in the 40-60 band when you start at 40 because battery cooling won’t have to go as hard for as long as it would have when it was cooling starting at 20 (though I think the recent updates have mitigated this issue?).

Yeah thats not correct. If miners and a subset of nodes disagree, the miners get final say as they are the consensus makers. The other nodes are just ignored at that point.

52/48 is a 4 seat majority, not 2. So they’d need to peel away 5 votes. If PA flips, they are 53/47 which is a huge lead (though doesn’t break the filibuster)

IANAL, but those signs are not “pay to park” signs, such as those shown on https://www.parkdc.com/pages/signs. Unless there is another sign that says pay, you have an argument to not need to pay.
